This is what the Anniversary Mode in Sonic Origins should have been, whilst the Classic Mode could've been the original sprites, with a toggleable 16:9 or 4:3 option

I remember seeing the discussions about this on Sonic Retro. The artists would have endless discussions on how to properly display the graphics in HD. This is what Classic Sonic should be going forward, HD sprites of the traditional 2D Genesis Sonic aesthetic. This was pretty much the only recognizable art direction Sonic ever had, and it would do a lot to differentiate Sonic and build greater brand identity. Mario has ALWAYS understood this.

This looks really nice but I've noticed some people in the comments saying Origins should have looked like this. Quite honestly, no, Origins shouldn't look like this. The 16-bit graphics of the original Sonic games have aged really well in comparison to other games of it's time. I think kids should experience the original 16-bit classics and give the HD treatment a play afterwards.

I've always wanted a remake trilogy like this. Sega probably won't ever do that though. They'll just go for either recreating the sprite style like the Christian Whitehead remakes or make it 3D with 3D "classic Sonic" like Sonic Superstars. I really LOVE this style.
