Sonic 2 Sky Chase (Demo Version) Oscilloscope Deconstruction

Demo song of Sonic 2 Sky Chase deconstructed/reconstructed with oscilloscope view. Recently, me and ‪@NUKELEDGE‬ discovered Sonic 2 demo songs were made mostly (if not fully) using a Yamaha SY99 keyboard, which made it possible to reconstruct the song.

wow here it is... almost too obviously a winter track (not to mention this makes it clear that the choir was meant to be a sort of "cold" sound in that it mimics the sound of a cold breeze)

Some interesting things to note: That four note sequence that can be heard at 0:00 and 0:25 is a common "Christmas/Winter" cliché, and can be heard in other game music, such as Ristar's ice level, and also in non-VGM music, such as "Very Merry Christmas" from Dreams Come True (Masato Nakamura's band). It has a high usage of instruments like bells, french horn and choir which are also common on ice/winter themed music. The rhythm of the melody at 0:05 is the same rhythm of part of the melody from the famous Christmas song "Jingle Bells" It was mentioned on interviews that Sonic 2 was planned to have a ice themed level, and all these facts together suggests this song may have been originally created for this level. That "cliché" is the Westminster Quarters bell chime. It can be heard in several Christmas songs, as it's commonly associated with christ and the church.

Dreams Come True's "Sweet Sweet Sweet"/"Sweet Dream" (a.k.a. the original song version of Sonic 2's ending theme) comes off quite wintery, especially since the English version ("Sweet Dream") released on a single known as "Winter Song".

This is really really good! Deconstructed like this, it is extremely clear even to the casual observer that this was almost certainly repurposed after the winter zone got scrapped.

@@DefinitiveDubs I used smps2mid to convert the song to midi, then I adjusted to be accurate to the Masa Demo version and then used a vst called Falcon to recreate the sounds

I made spectral comparisons for the sounds. Plus we checked 90s Dreams Come True live concerts, and they frequently used a Yamaha SY99.

do you know what the ice world's name was originally supposed to be? it should be in the missing hirokazu yasuhara concept art for the level but is too blurry to see the words

We still don't have confirmation, but Hirokazu Yasuhara designed a enemy that would come out from sand in desert zone, and the concept art says it was supposed to appear again in Rock Zone, with color difference. I think Rock Zone (Rock World Zone according to the island map) was the ice level, because it explains how the enemy would come out from sand in desert, and then appear again in Rock Zone, but coming from the snow.
