My favorite boss is the one where Tails forces himself past his limits just to keep sonic in the air, it’s such a subtle moment of friendship and determination, that’s what I like to see it as.

Of the sonic games, this one had the best story for its time. I mean as a kid I didn't quite get it, but as an adult, you can really look back and appreciate the story they were trying to set up. With how each boss at the end of a zone feels inconsequential at first, but as you move progressively more and more towards the completion of the death egg, you start to see bosses that are indications of what's to come (eg: fighting the hand in lava reef zone). You also fight Knuckles, who was misled by Robotnik, and finally go on a daring rescue to recover not only the chaos emeralds, but the master emerald itself. Robotnik does everything in his power to keep the emerald from you, but his last ditch effort isn't enough and Sonic wins it back, saving the land from Robotnik's reign. It was an awesome narrative without any narration.

I always thought the most difficult boss in this game was Lava Reef's major boss. It wasn't just Robotnik you were up against, but the environment as well. It required the most precision to get through, and you really had to have a modicum of skill to get through it without getting hurt... unless of course you grabbed the heat barrier right before. Red Eye also required a little patience compared to the other mini-bosses.

Gotta admit, Mecha Sonic was the coolest of the metal sonics. Actually used the concepts of both Sonic and being a robot as a boss and he's actually somewhat hard to keep up with. The spin dashes and jumps are impenetrable much like your own but he also speeds up in reverse to get you with his back spines... Pretty cool idea and kept you moving too.

Chronologically Mecha Sonic came after the other Sonic robots (at least the ones built by Eggman himself), so you can actually see a progression from just trying to copy Sonic to trying to completely outdo him. Metal Sonic came first in Sonic CD, as a direct 1:1 in capabilities. The "Mecha Sonic" we see in Sonic 2 came after that, but it's likely that that was a proof-of-concept prototype that was built first but then shelved in favor of Metal. Then we get to the _actual_ Mecha Sonic, which takes the same basic design as Metal Sonic and improves it in every way except presumably processing power - it's even capable of channeling Chaos energies and can likely do so even more effectively than Shadow if you consider the fact that it only needs to pull energy from the Master Emerald to achieve a super form (we never see any other character do this). Every sonic robot we see after Mecha is just an upgrade for Metal, or Eggman Nega's Metal Sonic 3.0. Honestly, though, seeing just how powerful Mecha Sonic can be at full tilt and how rebellious Metal Sonic had become later on, it's probably for the better that Eggman never redeployed Mecha Sonic after Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Imagine if Mecha Sonic decided to pull the same thing Neo Metal Sonic did in Sonic Heroes.

i like how that the act 2 boss theme is exclusively for the Egg. It makes him out to be more of a threat than the future sonic villains...if you look at all the eggman's eggomatic addon's these badboys are made to put an end to the blue blur and his intelligent sidekick. (which deserves his own game and is more a rival to the egg than sonic is) the 3rd game for sure is when egg got serious.

One thing that these bosses show off, is that the Genesis had some cool early 3D tech it was liberally using in the 90s. It might have been subtle, but it’s cool that they put some effort into at least making it functional if possible.

I just wanted to say that Sonic 3 and Knuckles is literally the best game ever. Gameplay, Soundtrack, Storyline... fantastic. Fighting your way to halt the launch, only to disrupt it. Knuckles causing problems at every turn, culminating in a (fairly easy) confrontation that leads to his alliance with Sonic once and for all. Then fighting your way to the Death Egg, past the security systems, and taking on a Master Emerald powered monstrosity... all ending with a battle between Super Sonic and Robotnik for the fate of the Master Emerald and Angel Island in the Doomday Zone. This was possible the closest Robotnik would ever get to complete takeover and final victory. Sega has soooo many gems. Golden Axe, Streets of Rage 2, Vectorman, Shining Force, Phantasy Star... I could probably go on for the next hour.

I mean, it has the best level layouts out of ALL the Sonic games, the most memorable levels with the most memorable music, actual serious bosses... and a great rival who becomes your friend. The Robotnik boss battle in Death Egg Zone 2 was tough for me as a kid. The first time I beat the first phase I thought I'd won, I was thinking "that wasn't too bad" then the second phase begins, I die instantly, took me several months to finally beat that. During that boss battle was the first time I actually swore when playing a video game.
