Yeah, It was implemented because Knuckles was extremely slow underwater, so they had to do something to fix the pace

What if you should have to find Knuckles in every level, and that's a secret entrance to a bonus level mode, where Knuckles explores the same level but can glide and noclip through everything. There it becomes a Tempest clone like sonic 2 bonus levels, except good, where you have to find emeralds in the negative space of the actual Sonic level, "digging" through the walls. As a bit of reward for exploring you get to explore in something like a debug mode.

This artstyle should have been the norm for 3d Sonic games. I played the hell outta sonic adventure as a kid but looking back trying to fit Sonic into a realistic environment is like jellybeans on a pizza.

For Classic Sonic, yes, but with Modern Sonic I think they need to make a mix of realistic and surreal to fit him into a world. Like trying to mix Classic Sonic’s art style with Modern Sonic’s design is disastrous, I mean just look at Sonic Lost World’s design I swear Modern Sonic doesn’t look like he fits into that environment at all. Even in the Advance games and Heroes the environments are more realistic while still being surreal to fit with the Modern Sonic design philosophy. If they change back to Classic Sonic being the primary Sonic then of course they should have art style closer to this but if they keep using Modern Sonic they should have balance of realistic and surreal since his design was built off those principles( and also the first game he appeared in had those principles in the world design too like Windy Valley, Casinoplis, and Red Mountain etc).

Maybe it's just me but during Hydrocity Zone Act 2 as the level went on it started to look like parts of DSZ and APZ were being used for some puzzles and gimmicks. I don't find this bad, just noting it.
