It is more about a balance of getting lots of rings, enemy kill combos and good time. Killing the gold beetle robot helps as well.

@@DangerXCV True for the most part. But hey, they also deserve respect for experimenting on different things to see what works and what doesn't. Big and Amy's gameplay didn't work so well so it was scrapped in sa2. Plus, when you have variety of gameplay styles, the stuff you especially like feels more satisfying to play. And plus the game as a whole feels more fun when you have a whole bunch of stykes you enjoy rather than just one that can kinda feel monotonous over time. ^^;

@@reginadeleon1911 Boost is cool, but the gameplay can get stale and to quick response reliant. Sonic should have quick response moments, but with the boost mechanic, even those get a bit harmed, since the acceleration feels like a sliding car, even at its best (don't even mention Forces). I believe boost should be more of a reward for skill at the game to be used carefully by the player. It could work like a state you enter after gathering enough speed for a while, maybe. It has its flaws and could be better, but hey: Sonic Unleashed and Generations ROCK HARD.

Did you find the Flame Ring? It's in Crazy Gadget. You can't complete the stage normally without it so it should be easy to find.

Flame ring is pretty useful, but in City Escape you get pretty much the worst upgrade for Sonic, believe me it's an item so bad, no one remembers to use it, it's called the Magic Hands

It is a mix of both. I would argue that the soundtrack and the early Sonic/Shadow stages are what makes this game good. It begins on a high note with City Escape and declines steadily downhill after that. I grew up with this game, but despite the nostalgia, I still see its flaws.
