Shadow's early concept art looked like Sonic, with a bigger chest and a scarred eye in one version. Another early concept had him wearing sunglasses and a sort of coat-cape. They went through multiple Sonic-like ideas before giving Shadow a unique character design. Pretty interesting, actually.
