How can one guy be so based? I've been saying the exact same thing since I realized it when Sonic Unleashed came out in 2008, when reviewers were giving it LOWER SCORES THAN '06! What a fucking joke. Ever since then I've stopped reading "professional review sites" as there's not only a really big biased complex but also idiocy. Sonic's hate is just a meme, a new game comes out and you HAVE to hate it and slam it without batting an eye, the only game that didn't get that hate were Generations and maybe even Colors (although sites like GT still gave it lower scores than '06 for both versions of the game), pretty sure Generations didn't get much hate was because of "MUH CLASSIC SONIC" though. I'm not trying to defend this game's poor quality, I am however trying to defend the franchise which gets too much flak and hate for no reason other than it's fun to do it or because it's funny, every two years.

well, no one really criticized the GOOD modern Sonic games. Colors, Generations, even Sonic 4 to some extent. I do agree Sonic games sometimes gets more flack than warranted, Sonic Lost World was an average game, yet some people were determined to bunch it with 06. However, Sonic Boom Wii U, is a terrible, terrible TERRIBLE game. I'm not sure what kind of people could enjoy the game. It is a complete bore from start to finish and does nothing well.

I'm glad I've found a reviewer that didn't just blindly call it "Sonic 06 2.0". I'm sick of people blindly calling it 06 2.0. I've tried to defend this game at some people who are going "SANIC 06 WAS BETTER THAN RISE OF LYRIC" but they kept refusing what I honestly thought of the game and what I found enjoyable (I personally find this game okay at best). Whenever I hear people saying "DIS GAEM HAS NUU GUUD QUALTIES THERFORE MAKIN IT DA WURST SANIC GAME EVUR" i'm like "Have you even played this game and 06?". I swear some people in the sonic fanbase forgot about the reasons why 06 is considered one of the worst games ever.

sonictheimmeenpootis I think it's because people don't have Sonic 06 fresh in their mind, and because this game is so wildly different than your usual Sonic game, it's getting the harsh treatment because it's different. No matter what, Sonic never gets a break, not from fans of the series nor most game reviewers, any game he's in is harshly and unfairly criticized, even when Sega gives fans and critics the Sonic game they want, they still complain and I wouldn't blame them if they stopped making Sonic games altogether. I have a theory that the reason why Sonic games get so much hate is because people have been using him as a target for their frustration at other games that are over hyped and given scores that they don't deserve. Hence why I brought up Assassin's Creed Unity, a game that got really high scores despite the fact that Ubisoft clearly sent out an unfinished game that needed a handful of large patches to make it functional and this practice of release now, patch later mentality is being accepted when everyone knows it shouldn't be. So to vent all the frustration they take it out on Sonic games because they're easy targets because of the one truly bad game that nearly killed the series. The same would happen to any other series, if another Duke Nukem game came out (for the record I thought that the PC version of Duke Nukem Forever was pretty good), it would get criticized harshly regardless of quality while the next CoD could be a bug ridden mess of glitches and it would still get praised. But it's only a theory that I came up with based on the current trend of gamer attitudes where if a series had a least 1 really bad game then any game that comes after it is seen as bad and that the series isn't as good as it used to be and whatnot

I don't understand how people like the Werehog stages of Sonic Unleashed. To me, they dragged on for a long time, was a monotonous button-masher, and the daytime sections were just short, few, and far between. Sonic Colors corrected that by just taking the daytime levels of Sonic Unleashed and expanded where appropriate and corrected any issues.

Just because it's for kids doesn't excuse it being terrible. This game is unplayable, half the game can be skipped over by walking through walls, the gameplay's boring, the music is unmemorable for a Sonic game, and kids just deserve better than this. My 7 year old cousins played this game and they got bored of it after 10 minutes and stopped playing. Then I made them play Super Smash Bros for Wii U and they were having so much fun they couldn't stop playing. Then I made them play Mario Kart 8, and again they were having lots of fun. Kids know what they like, and they deserve better than this, if my 7 year old cousins got bored of this game, then the game failed.

I honestly think that this is worse than 06. Because 06 played vaguely like a sonic game and I never fell trough the floor while playing the game normally. What your saying is that your ok with sonic's max speed being of leisurely stroll and don't say that its a spinoff if I'm buying what is a sonic game with out the speed platforming then whats the point of playing a sonic game. Silver the hedgehog ran faster than sonic in ROL.

They were made well without being broken and even so they separated themselves enough to where they were different than the main series. Sonic boom is a platformer so it should have the quintessential elements of a sonic game.

Wafflecone69 But Sonic Boom made itself separate enough from the main series as well, Sega even said that it was going to be different from the main series before the game came out, videos on the game even showed it being different. And for what Sonic Boom does better than 06 in gameplay aspects, well the physics actually work, you can't walk up walls or send things flying into space by sneezing on them. Sonic's homing attack works better and his spin dash actually has power behind it. The combat is miles ahead of what 06 called Shadow's melee orientated "combat" and whatever they called Silver's telekinetic combat that was very selective in how it worked. Tails has no dummy ring bombs that are near usless, Amy's attacks are much better and she doesn't stop dead in her tacks to slowly swing her hammer to the ground, the double jumping works unlike Amy's in 06. The speed sections allow you to control the characters in mid air unlike Sonic 06's mach speed zones where if you jumped you're fucked. No billiard puzzle. The stages don't take forever to complete. Power ups are actually useful in Sonic Boom instead of being silly little toys like those gems Sonic gets in 06. Knuckles doesn't get skunk on the wall when he's climbing it. Sonic Boom's framerate was more consistent than Sonic 06 on the PS3. Tails gliding in Sonic Boom works better than Knuckles gliding in 06, where Knuckles would slow down but drop considerably. Need I go on?

I don't think so they were both platformers and there weren't progression blocking bugs like in sonic boom where sometimes a part of the ground would break and you would fall to the ground. Whats the point of having a spin dash if its never useful for gaining speed. Also sonic boom can slow to a crawl in the speed sections. Ive never had a performance issue with sonic 06 nor have I heard anyone have performance issues. As far as melee combat goes the werehog was more interesting and you could unlock more combos as well. The power ups in sonic 06 actually meant something because you could skip parts of an entire level or make it easier to get time bonuses for missions. There isn't an excuse for such a sloppy execution because they had a 3 year development cycle. The character in sonic boom all played the same while sonic 06 had good concepts and ideas. Also 06 had far better level design to where there were alternate routes you could take. The speed section in sonic 06 never had frame rate drops and at least the characters were more likable in 06 because they shut up.

That's who Boom Sonic is supposed to be like, sort of a sarcastic western cowboy/hero esq. character. His voice is the only thing holding him back. It was great for Modern Sonic but I would have preferred to see Boom Sonic get a new voice.

FINALLY ANOTHER REVIEWER THAT DOESNT SCREW SONIC OVER JUST CAUSE HES SONIC. I know Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric isnt as bad as 06. Why? because when RoL came out, I was replaying 06 for a playthrough. Then I went to pick up both games, sat down, played Rise of Lyric, beat it the next day, and I mildly enjoyed it. I had some sections I disliked, but over all, while YES, this is a bargain bin game, I still think its an enjoyable one. also, apparently there is supposed to be a patch coming out soon since its already out in Europe to get rid of the Knuckles glitch that people keep talking about, as well as fix the frame rate of the speed sections

I'm not sure how to put this, but I think this review should be mandatory viewing. I'm so sick of people complaining about this game to the point of it being as memetic as the hatred of Sonic 2006, and this review sheds a lot of light on the game that might negate the exaggeration. Also, yeah, the cartoon is really good as well. While I've only seen the episodes Unlucky Knuckles and The Meteor, they've managed to leave me in stitches and the latter is being recommended a lot to TheMysteriousMrEnter to review as an Admirable Animation, mostly because it's an example of a perfect body-swap episode.

It's really down to personal preference I guess but I come from the same side as you do. I can't in good conscience find Sonic Boom to be anything spectacular. The writing in the show is just bland and boring. The only saving grace is Dr. Eggman.

Dat DHW I didn't do the Co-op because it's not online, it's local only and I wasn't going to call anyone up to give it a try, I hear it makes the frame rate horrible though

It makes it a bit worse but it never goes back up to 60fps so there are a lot less drops and me and my friend got used to it. It's actually impressive since you can be on the other side of a level or even on a completely different route on the speed sections and the framerate will only be slightly worse than what it usually is. (Like a 5 frame difference).

CryEngine wasn't made for Wii U *or* Sonic since it has trouble loading large chunks of detail quickly. Why they decided to jump from their previous engine (which was gorgeous) to CryEngine is beyond me.

I've really enjoyed the demo. I'm pretty sure when I do play it I will give it either a six or seven out of ten. Sonic Lost World improved drastically with the patch. I'll have to say to those of you who can't stand it is to each their own.

I'm still very wary of this game despite it being out for quite some time now. I've watched the show and while I love what they did with Amy, the show's atmosphere feels very bland and a lot of the jokes don't hit for me (humor is subjective of course). I still do plan on playing the game as I like to give everything a shot and when I do review it, I'll try to be as honest as I can. But I did enjoy hearing your thoughts on this game. You seem to give these games (Sonic) a fair analysis highlighting the good and the bad and I really appreciate that. Keep up the amazing work :)

You are right about the presents thing. It is not only about the games but the voice acting and the story to. People used to bash the 4Kids voice actors and the dark stories, but now look at the fans now, they miss Jason Griffith and the dark plots

Rare Ware I would have liked Sonic X, if it was about, you know, SONIC. Not the rich boy we're apparently supposed to relate to. See, it seems writers seem to have this idea of having a tag-along kid that the audience is supposed to relate to and see themselves in the place of said kid, but from what I've noticed, 95% of the time, kids end up hating the tag-alongs and wish they would focus on the cool characters they came to watch. Those tag-along kid characters just seems like those things that seem okay in theory but then totally fail in practice.

I really dont agree about the Sonic boom cartoon. Its a fun show to watch i guess but its only about comedy and nothing else and shows that are only about comedy does not feel very special or memorable to me. I want Sonic to be about adventure and stopping Eggman and other villains and to have more serious, memorable and interesting ongoing storys like Sonic Satam, Sonic X and the Sonic Adventure games did. And Sonic X is an awesome show and its the best Sonic show of them all in my opinion because it mixed funny comedy with great serious storys that could get dark sometimes and it got many interesting characters and made Sonic and his friends more interesting and developed than they usually are.

LimeGamer Exactly and people need to realize that there's gray areas too, people have been telling me that they combat is boring, yeah the combat may be boring, but at least it's functional, it's not like Ride to Hell where hand to hand combat just doesn't work and you need to pull off headshots to bring down the opponents. As long as something in a game works as intended, I'm not going to say it's bad.

people that LIKE the werehog stages in unleashed? alright, let me explain, the werehog gameplay itself is perfectly fine, in fact I like it. problem, the levels are WAY TOO FUCKING LONG on the HD version, the wii version of the game doesnt have such unbelievably mindbogglingly large levels, but the werehog gameplay in my opinion was worse, firstly sonic always moves like he's on ice on the wii version(i hate ice-physics), he doesnt have as many moves or combos and I just generally liked how the werehog itself was handled in the HD version, although I'll gladly take the wii version's werehog stages because the levels dont take so much fucking time to finish.

semaseri x yeah but i prefer more combos since a smaller roster of moves feels tedious after a while of just using the same stuff over and over, I get bored of the same combos so I prefer to mix it up a bit

I've gotten to the point that Sonic Boom in no way deserves nearly as much fire as its been under the public blowtorch for far too long. as I only played the demo and even looked up the review. I was expecting something akin to Sonic 06 level chaos.... but I do disagree with Secret rings being worse than 06 unleashed was also seen as Okay, kinda like Lost World and Shadow the hedgehog, Sonic's career has been mostly mediocre in the middle, while people praise the classics, spurn 3d blast and the game gear titles condemn Sonic 06 and secret rings and even Forget Shadow and Black Knightyet titles like Colours and Generations are revered as ordained by the heavens.

+fsdfds dssadas I think that Mike (RetroReplay) goes for functionality over overall appeal. Because a lot of us has to admit that while Sonic Boom was different, the game does function properly (for the most part compared to 06). So it deserves a nod at that at the very least.

On some of these points, I do agree. The glitch that lets you skip over most of the game is kind of a dumb thing for people to complain about, since if they watch any speedrunner channel they'd know it's pretty common in games. I mean, Metroid Prime doesn't suck because of it, and neither does Super Mario 64. However, I just can't get over the graphics. I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert on them or anything, but I remember the Kingdom Hearts games looking better than this. Plus, while the Sonic games were never big on character development, most of them at least had interesting personalities. In Sonic Boom, they seem to have one-note personalities and never go beyond that. Just me talking tho :)

I have to agree with Clement as well. This game was actually pretty good and I had fun with this game though probably millions will disagree with me I don't care. Your comparison with that one game getting an 8.0 despite it being a rushed mess pretty much sums up the problems with the gaming industry. The Sonic Cycle, the way people treat the Sonic games in general. It's all a mess. Rise of Lyric is not that bad a game so stop comparing it to a rushed bug ridden pile of trash that was rushed for an anniversary release while it was still in the freaking beta stages. I would give this game after a successful full play through the rating of Decent on your scale and probably as I say that a million angry Sonic fan boys and just gamers in general mostly from IGN and Metacritic are probably going to be pointing their flame war guns at me in retaliation for voicing my honest thoughts which infringe on their "ideals".

Honestly I realy like the art sytle for the world in this game.It feels consistent(outside of having no humans despite eggman).I am sick and tired of 3d sonic games jumping back and forth between classic (Heroes,lost world), realistic (Adventure 1 and 2, shadow, 06, unleashed), and original(colors, secret rings, black night).Same thing with the people.Cartoony (Adventure 1 and 2, shadow),realistic(06, secret of the rings, black night), and super cartoony. I don't care how overrated the show is, when I finally got around to watching it, I enjoyed it. I was very engaged with the plot (LAME cliffhanger ending though lol). Sonic Boom is hit/miss for me (mostly misses with the exception of the Eggman episodes, he's what makes the show). But I can see how others would prefer Boom over the other shows.

Excellent review. I agree with all you said. Everyone is treating this game like "its the new Sonic '06" but it really isn't THAT bad... it's just average like you said. I hated the character redesign too. But the game was ok. Also, fuck Sonic and the Secret Rings. The main problem I have with this game is that it doesn't feel like a Sonic game. For one thing, they took away what made Sonic stand out from other mascot platformers, and lacks any real identity of its own. Even if you can overlook the bugs and glitches, it's a boring slog that has no real identity.
