The reason why it seemed like you got a ring at the very end in the 8-Bit one, it actually switches for "Ring Bonus" too, and ring bonus was the first bonus so you got instantly switched when it ended.

First time playing was at my dad's friend house and it was Sonic 1 on the Genesis back in '91. The friend also had Road Rash and After Burner II, I instantly loved the system (though thought Sonic yelled "Egg Nog" at the startup, no joke lol). Around Christmas of next year we got our own Genesis with Sonic 2 and that's my fave to this day, love all the music and the levels are balanced out pretty fairly, building up difficulty steadily the longer you play. :) Very cool hack, def would love to see you play more. :)
