Freedom Planet feels a lot like a 2D Sonic Adventure (with the multiple characters with wildly different playstyles thing), with a plot that feels like the closest thing we'll ever get to a Sonic SatAM game (it helps that the voice acting and dialogue feels a lot like Saturday morning cartoon dialogue.) Also, "Freedom Planet" is a play on the setting of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, Planet Freedom.
@Shiro76288 жыл бұрын
Freedom Planet actually started out as a Sonic FanGame that became its own project in the end. In fact, the characters are all Sonic OCs (cringe)
@XerKoro_neo8 жыл бұрын
Just because there are bad OC's out there doesn't mean that all are bad. People will do as they want to, and often times, they are super uncreative. Then you find the people like ZiyoLing who are actually really creative and find ways to show their own desires for a character. That is why the three main characters actually turned into their own beings pretty quickly. ALSO... only Lilac, Carol and Milla were fan characters at one point. I believe that everyone else is completely original. But even with freedom planet, people will be very uncreative. Take this for example. victinirus.deviantart.com/art/Sapphire-the-dragon-Girl-Biomeh-626492629 literally just a re-color.
@Shiro76288 жыл бұрын
+XerKoro_neo +XerKoro_neo Fair enough. I suppose the concept of fan-characters just doesn't sit well with me due to the excessive amount of utter garbage that many have birthed unto this world. I will admit, Carol, Milla, and Lilac all look rather unique (although Lilac looks NOTHING like a dragon to me...) and it makes sense that they would become their own thing. I'm surprised to see something like Sapphire the Dragon Girl, though... And I really wish I didn't.... My eyes are now bleeding.... God damn it...
@XerKoro_neo8 жыл бұрын
Sanic Yeah, that's a very common thought amongst people who played freedom planet. Believe me though, she used to look even less like one. It's actually gross a little bit. This guy has plenty of other characters like this one. Some of his "OC's" are literally just pieces of different sprites that were already made from different games. And two of them who appear to have halfway decent animation that wasn't pre-existing were requested from me. xerkoro.deviantart.com/art/VictiniRus-s-Saturn-idle-with-a-new-tail-546629206 xerkoro.deviantart.com/art/Venus-New-head-animation-request-579000820 Both of these really categorizes a lot of the fan-character communities. Although, yes, not all fan-characters are grotesque recreations of things. Like mine for example: xerkoro.deviantart.com/art/Shou-the-Red-Panda-and-Zephyra-the-Fennec-Fox-FPs-544685289 As crappy as mine are, at least they are original. ^u^;
@Shiro76288 жыл бұрын
+XerKoro_neo I'm scared... He decapitated a Snivy and Zoroark and stuck their heads on a mech suit... >~< anyways yeah the sprites you made seen pretty good. The red panda one reminds me a bit of the emperor in the beginning cutscene (the one who was, ironically enough, decapitated by Lord Brevon) but that's just me. It looks good nonetheless.
@SaiyanGamer958 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that Freedom Planet originally started out as a Sonic fan game. Though it quickly grew into something more. Also, while Freedom Planet was fun, my three biggest issues are the lack of difficulty spike (at least for Lilac's story, since I haven't gotten far in Carol's story), the lack of invincibility frames when hit by a multi-hit attack such as a laser, one the mood. One minute it's fun and cheerful and upbeat, but the next, Lilac's torture that the hands of Lord Brevon!

Speaking of clones, you forgot to mention Lori Jackrabbit, whose special ability was to fly by her copter ears, like Tails, and whose looking was clearly inspired by Lola Bunny (whose movie was coming out in the same period). And that's probably why they changed her role from love interest to sister of Jazz and Spazz. Just to make the rip-off less evident. Oh! And another thing. Do you know Rocky Rodent for the SNES? It's not even a Sonic clone, but the box art makes so much effort in convincing you it is. That's absolutely slicky!

Might as well leave this STUPIDLY long explanation of Freedom Planet's history. The game started out as a straight up Sonic fangame by Strife (Stephen DiDuro, SpacemanStrife, GalaxyTrail) using three fan characters by Ziyo Ling (Sash Lilac, Carol Tea, and Milla), a Deviantart artist that you should actually check out. And when I said fangame, I mean it had sound effect rips from the Genesis games, items worked the same way (The health was given by rings) and Lilac was originally a hedgehog. Then as time went on, Strife decided to differentiate the game from a fangame, partly from the possible threat of SOPA at the time, and because the project was becoming bigger than planned. So some additional staff recruitment across the Internet, Kickstarter funds, Steam delays, character and story redesigns later, Freedom Planet emerged as what it is now. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to finish my second playthrough.

What's funny is that while Awesome Possum was overtly environmental, Sonic had it's subtle environmental cues as well. You rescue a capsule full of animals at the end of most stages, you fight a greedy machine based super villain, and as you draw closer and closer to the end of the game, and presumably closer to eggman's base, the peaceful forested environments turn more and more to urban and industrial settings. Sonic was subtly telling us about the dangers of industrialization to nature and wildlife.

I actually didn't enjoy Freedom Planet, it's a bit of a clusterfuck, the story is kinda obnoxious (The voices kill me on the inside, some sound like they were LITERALLY phoned in), some of the bosses walk the line of being stupid but manageable to boring, long slogs. Also, even on my monster computer (and console versions) the game had sudden framerate drops which I'm usually not bothered by, but I mean CHUUUUGING along for no reason. One could even say I hate Freedom Planet.
@wheeledtank8 жыл бұрын
I myself have not had any sort of Frame-Rate or Slow-down issues with Freedom Planet on either PC or Console, and my PC had a 10 year old graphics card when I first played. With the voices, that was because they were all recorded in different studios with different equipment, which could be partly why the voices are horrible at times (I myself don't mind them (except Torque), but that may be because I have heard much worse on a more regular basis)
@JackieKog8 жыл бұрын
wheeledtank That's what I found odd. Though I did play it (and play every storyline) day of launch and barely touched it since. Perhaps that issue is gone.
@wheeledtank8 жыл бұрын
Might have been the early versions; I first got it in March this year. The only place I had any real/noticeable slowdown was Pangu Lagoon with the flying tops, and that was only when enemies were being hit.
@JackieKog8 жыл бұрын
wheeledtank I meant the game would chug whenever there was anything going on, if you stopped moving it'd be fine, Pangu Lagoon was almost unplayable and I had to brute force it, was completely impossible to enjoy. Perhaps it is different now, but I just have no reason to go back to it anyway.

What? I suppose that by "chaos sonic" you mean Super Sonic, and what you said is not correct. Super Sonic appeared for the first time in Sonic 2 in 1992 while the first time Goku transformed into a Super Saiyan was in chapter 317 of the Dragon Ball manga in 1991. Plus, the fact that there are 7 Chaos Emeralds mirrors the 7 Dragon Balls. It's not that Sonic is a rip-off of Dragon Ball, they are both completely different, but those two elements were likely used as a nod to Dragon Ball.

When I was a kid I used to be a HUGE Sonic fan, played every single game I could and had this huge obsession with the cartoons and the franchise in general. But at some point, I stopped for reasons I can't quite remember, and then revisited the classic titles, but they didn't seem to be as fun as before. You see, I never got past the second zone in ANY of the classic trilogy games (Marble Zone? Never got past it. Chemical Plant? Drowned every single time in Act 2. Hydrocity? Same deal. Flying Battery? Always fell down bottomless pits) as a kid, but I was always having so much fun playing these games that I just didn't care, but as a teenager revisiting them, even after beating all 3, they felt like something was missing. Enter Freedom Planet. A game that I instantly fell in love with, it is currently my favourite indie game and GOTY 2014, the combat is fun as hell and the bosses are fucking incredible, soundtrack is amazing and the story, while corny, had a SOUL. I left Sonic behind because FP fit my current tastes more, and I'm still looking forward to playing the sequel.

"At least Mohawk & Headphone Jack exists, which is more than I can say for Megaman Legends 3"? DUDE, NOT COOL!! ...Or maybe it is, I don't know. My point is, it still cuts deep.

That mohawk game or whatever seems like kind of a cool concept at least, I wonder if there's some clever indie dev out there who can take that idea of freely rotating stages, apply current tech, and make it work and not be nauseating

This was great! Nice to see some games I missed back in the Mega Drive era, tho I still remember being absolutely mind-melted by Mo Hawk & Headphone Jack....

Wait, you TALKED about High Seas Havoc all those years ago?! This is a game I remember renting as a kid and loving. I come back to it time and time again, I just wish time hasn't forgotten it. I'd argue it's more like if you took One Piece and combined it with Sonic. The main character isn't really a hedgehog as it is, he's clearly some kind of otter or a sea lion. I also just love the SPINNING DROP KICK attack, or more like a spinning heel drop? There's some seriously epic bosses, and it gets to the point of One Piece power levels, especially fighting a certain admiral wolf ~

Freedom Planet is a fantastic game. It's biggest Sonic-like feature I think is the character design though. These are cleaned up fan characters in appearance. Also bad voice acting (tho I think its fine) would just give it more in common with Sonic. Also fuck yeah JAZZ JACKRABBIT.

There's gonna be a Freedom Planet 2? What a time to be alive! Freedom Planet was my personal GOTY for 2014 (seriously, most fun I had all year). I need this in my veins now.

The good news is that "Freedom Planet 2" is now finally released after seven years of development. The bad news, however, is that it's only available on PC and Steam and not on consoles.

I honestly can't understand how sonic fans can complain about how bad voice acting is in freedom planet like it's the the first time they saw an anthropomorphic animal with terrible voice acting. Sonic adventures 1 & 2 were completely full of them.

I was always a fan of Jazz Jackrabbit, it's good to see it here, but I think you forgot to mention 3 things: 1. In jazz jackrabbit it feels right moving slow (unlike Sonic where the character feels clunky and heavy when moves slow), and that's a way to prevent random hazard ahead. 2. In jazz jackrabbit 2 if you choose a low resolution, the sprite doesn't look tiny. At the beginning is tempting to choose a low resolution because of that, but after playing a while everybody ended choosing the high resolution to have a larger field of view. Right now that's the only aspect of Jazz Jackrabbit 2 that I feel dated, in the modern platformers usually the camera zooms in and out automatically depending of the level design. 3. In the first Jazz Jackrabbit the first chapter(the first 6 levels, i.e. levels included in the demo) is awesome, unfortunately the rest of the game lacks that level of polish.

freedom planet actually started out as a rom hack of sonic 2 before the stand alone game was made

Honestly, I thought the Freedom Planet storyline was surprisingly good. I wasn't expecting it to be that great... but it was actually kinda interesting IMO. And yeah, I wasn't expecting to like Freedom Planet that much and ended up loving it. Definitely looking forward to Freedom Planet 2.

It was really bizarre to see Freedom Planet pop up. Lilac is literally an old Sonic OC I recognize from DeviantART years ago. The other characters look a bit familiar too. So that adds another layer to the whole Sonic clone game.

Coin glint noises doesn't mean rip off, the only similarity between the havoc sound effect and the sonic sound effect is that they're both high pitched. Art style is definitely a rip though, there's no getting around it.

Freedom Planet is an amazing homage to old-school Sonic games though, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants more of them when Sega's apparently stopped doing that (except with Sonic Mania which I'm excited for.) It's like Mighty No. 9...except done entirely right.
