I don’t mind Rouge branching out to other stories. The problem I have is that she’s being used as a plot device to just gain any sort of random information without any effort for the cast or plot, she’s like the Chaotix but everybody thinks she’s hot.

@@RameNoodls I don’t agree that Dream Team is open, it has a moment in the first act of each level where you collect a few keys to open a door, and it puts you back in those areas for the “collect dream orbs” challenges.. but the vast majority of the stages are highly linear in their design. I’m almost certain that they don’t even have multiple paths to take. I think you’re mishearing me on the unleashed/generations statement. I didn’t say Dream Team was like them, I was saying that the only way the fast paced-speed-through-a-level gameplay ever worked was when it added cinematic and scripted moments, it fell dead flat in a game like Forces. in defense of the game, it has a story lmao not to mention if its a lower budget mobile game, i think they did great within the limits its not often you see 3D platformers on mobile also dream team isnt really a cinematic rollercoaster, its way less automated than frontiers or even unleashed it felt like you unfairly judged the game on the fact it isnt on the level of genshin impact which is kind of strange to me because i never thought dream team was gonna be like that? its the devs behind dash, i dont think you should expect a massive open world RPG out of that
@kotytang10 ай бұрын
It does have a story, a very lazily done one. The “limitations” are supposed to only be that it’s a mobile device. And even if they weren’t able to achieve near console-grade graphics, the purpose was that it’s narrative driven. They could have added scenes with no voice acting along with voice acted scenes. 3D Platformers not often being on mobile isn’t an excuse for anything. They would still be created like any other game that exceeds average mobile quality, instead of high octane action or an open world adventure, it would be platforming. A phone can play games that exceed even a Switch’s quality at this point. I wasn’t calling Dream team a cinematic roller coaster, I actually said it was like Colors and Heroes. I later on said the only time high speed gameplay worked properly was when Sonic was a cinematic roller coaster.

Yeah, I've been tired of Tails being used as the science-tech-guru plot device for a while now, so it's pretty disappointing that Sonic Dream Team continues the trend. Tails is _smart_ but he has his own specializations, namely mechanics, robotics, some computer stuff, and eventually scientific study of the Chaos Emeralds. Not all of his inventions worked out the first time around either (for example, his plane mishaps in SA1). There's really no good reason for Tails to instantly figure out random things like the Reverie that have nothing to do with his usual fields of expertise. (As a related aside, I cringe every time I see that tablet device in his hands). He also kinda got shafted in the final boss fight, 'cause again, he was delegated to plot device. He was the ONLY character that wasn't playable for that fight. I was actually more interested seeing the trailer for Sonic Dream Team than I was Sonic Frontiers. Even if Sonic Dream Team isn't exactly pushing the limits of mobile games and likely isn't the best Sonic game ever, I appreciated that it at least felt like it was trying to be Sonic. Frontiers felt like a wannabe Breath of the Wild in terms of premise, and there's nothing inherently "Sonic" about its setting. It honestly seems like Sonic Team still doesn't understand the elements of the Sonic franchise that give it its identity in the first place. (I've still yet to play Frontiers, but the more I see of it the less I feel like playing it lol). As for characterization overall, I don't think Dream Team had a lot going on, but it still seems to be falling into certain characterization pitfalls. They still have Amy as "the girl character", throwing away her more unique traits. Sonic seems... mid? Tails is again the plot device knowledge-guru. Knuckles and Rouge are there I guess (I haven't seen as many of their scenes). Cream seems oddly fearful despite her past experiences (like, I can understand her being afraid of a nightmare monster, but normal badniks?). Watching the gameplay, the game seems alright, but it does seem like people on the internet have somewhat overblown its quality. Like, the abilities of each of the characters seem pretty limited. Flight characters seemed to have got it the worst, with their flight being their only ability and practically being situational due to how neutered it is compared to previous games. Ariem had a cool character design, but her character's existence is also situational and she probably won't reappear in any meaningful context. I've only seen a small bit of the narrative for Dream Team, but my initial impression is that Ariem mostly exists to explain the Reverie to the characters (whenever Tails isn't explaining it). This also kinda applies to the Reverie itself, as well as everything else in the game, in that they don't seem to connect to anything else. I suppose they don't _need_ to, but Sonic games up to 06 were pretty good at tying elements of each game to each other in some way, which was very effective in creating an interesting and coherent setting, rather than each game essentially existing on its own in some sort of vacuum.

The entire franchise has just devolved into everybody being a character trope, I'm getting pretty tired of going over the same exact faults over and over without a single thing improving, it just continues to get worse in fact. There's no overarching story, there's no narrative, there's no meaningful moments, it's just a bunch of lore dumps and random moments to advance the games along. There's a status quo that's going to be met every single time, the story's pretty much dead in the water until we can get entirely new writers, as well as placing more funding and faith into their development teams that can take the franchise to new heights I like the idea of the vibrant colors and fun adventures that Dream Team brings to the table, but I like the modernized progression of Frontiers much more. I'm done with the "series roots' the roots of the franchise are constantly holding them back from expanding, Sonic should be at the top of the food chain when it comes to Platforming, but there's stuck in the 90-00s era and don't want to get out of it. Frontiers is a good step to breaking that mold, it's just not fully formed quite yet. Dream Team is just a generic Sonic game, it's exactly what you expect, it's just very short. Dream Team was supposed to be a one-off which is fine, because it's a spin off game. I'm just very disappointed in the fact that this was supposed to be narrative driven, and they only gave us 30 minutes of story, with 3 hours of repeated challenges.
@someotherstranger10 ай бұрын
@@kotytang I couldn't agree more on that note. The main issue with SEGA's "going back" is that they think "going back" is enough to "fix things", rather than trying to truly understand the franchise. They keep trying to "go back to their roots" without understanding what made those roots work in the first place. In the meantime, I guess there's always fan projects to look forward to.

Sonic as a franchise is pretty much just worried about stepping on anybody's toes, while also somehow ignoring every single instance of fan outcry, they've managed to completely derail their story and characters, yet continue holding on thanks to a cult of rabid consumers. The games for this franchise will likely never progress thanks to this. Sega is lucky to own an IP like Sonic the Hedgehog. The Sonic fanbase will consume any piece of media with their entire heart and endlessly keep buying into it, no matter what it is. If this were any other franchise it would be long dead.
