I'm really surprised people still remember this game. Amazing review! But first of all I'd like to clear out some things. Spirits of hell games are NOT part of Nightmare Universe. It's not a spin-off, it's a standalone game. NB characters are just easter eggs, cuz Jaiz, developer of NB is my friend. SoH was supposed to be an RPG kinda game in 2015-2016 ( I'm glad I didn't continued it ). After NB I was inspired of making my own normal version of Exe. game and here SoH was born. Unfair difficulty, weird level design, but I enjoyed developing it back in the day. It was indended to be hard, but watching at it right now, it really needs a remake. Developing sequel of this game was a hell. A lot of cut content, ideas, Clickteam crushing, but overall WoS was a big accomplishment for me. Creating such a big game mostly alone ( of course some people helped me with sprites, engine tweaks etc. ) made me feel really proud of myself and I planned on making it better by adding voice acting, fixing bugs, maybe even new routes in the future, while also developing a DLC, but there was another side of a coin. Many people felt like I went in a wrong direction creating WoS. Weird canon that has parts of different universes of Sonic ( like Fleetway, Archie etc. ). Game lost it's horror part, but it was never about horror in the first place. For me these new Exe games following only horror trope are weird, they're not scary at all, but maybe it's just me, so I accept it. But when games like SoH or NB trying to be more of a story and gameplay style games, they get a ton of hates. Some people in community, community itself and later on, situation in Ukraine where I live, made me want to cancel all of it. Some folks making a remake of SoH, even WoS ( even if it doesn't need a remake, but update ) and continuing making DLC. I don't believe all of this projects will be completed, but I'll be happy to be wrong. I'm glad I made such an impact on community and I hope I even inspired some people out there too.

There are two details of this game and that I think you probably missed: - In the 2 duo routes that has choices, while making the wrong choice kills Knuckles or Eggman instantly, Tails can actually survive and continue in his own solo ending if he has a black ring. - There are a total of 4 jumpscares in this game. You have already shown 2 (Tails found Exeller on the tree, Eggman failed to reach the elevator before Exeller) and 1 you have probably seen (Exeller jumping out of the vent to kill Eggman is a jumpscare). However, the fourth gets pretty interesting. In Tails survival route, going back to the tornado when Tails spotted dead animals and there will be a black ring. But doing so when he got to the pale part will start a chase. While it is possible to escape, failing to do so will land you a jumpscare

I think Spirits of Hell's difficulty is like that by game design. It's not only to encourage you getting solo or duo endings, which are unique features of the game (for its time), but it's also to make you feel like you have to earn saving them. As you said, saving characters before was not as popular and I can see the creator wanting to show how hard it would be for the characters to survive against a being with superpowers who already almost planned everything out.

Sally.exe Whisper of Souls, the sequel to the game is ONE of the best things I've ever seen in a Sonic.exe community, and I recommend it as it surpasses the original game in unimaginable ways. The story finally becomes something unique, some characters get good treatments and it's still difficult... But not as much as round 1. And another thing, the other universe that was mentioned in this video, Nightmare Universe made by another creator, has nothing to do with this game. It was just an easter egg Exetior (sonic.exe from Nightmare Universe) In the end, Exetior doesn't have a big role in the story, other than a few scenes.

In true route, when Tails and Knuckles already met each other, Knuckles accuses Eggman for making Sonic evil, and Tails says "I've seen him on cameras", even if he never had chance to check on him while running from Sonic (if you want more plotholes, i can tell you more examples). Also the fact, that even if you save one character, they will still die because "plot reasons" (which is funnier, considering Eggman's ending, where he becomes a hero, and dies one scene later). Overcomplication by including themes of parallel universes and perfect timelines with no reasoning like "yeah this exe version of Tails just knows about parallel universes". Only good thing SoH did is made popular this genre of "survival games", and it's not even original. Before this game, there was "Dark story: Bloody fate (beta)", which is famous in russian community, and who Danuha (creator of the game) is? Yep, russian (no hate ofc, i'm russian too, just making point on why it's not even fully his idea). It's a bad game, and you shouldn't defend it just for being one that gives you nostalgia. It's only good compared to original formula, just try to compare it with good games.

Ahhhh spirit of hell and all of the suits/spin of of NU , they are a real gold mine and really interesting, not scary , but well made (and also lore chaotic as f- cuz there's a ton of them).
