Tomoya Ohtani was super proud of putting an 8-string guitar on the soundtrack, which is weird considering Ohtani is the synth hiphop guy from SA2. He's an incredibly versatile composer. Boss themes and the main theme "I'm Here" are like this. (I love I'm Here btw)
@Mikanookie Жыл бұрын
Note: It was a 9-string guitar, I think it might be the first game to do so now that I think about it. Still, to have them pull off a soundtrack like this is just unreal - every time I listen to it, I've always pictured it just being about Sonic in all aspects.
@cosmiceternity2033 Жыл бұрын
Oh definitely. I highly recommend checking out the Sonic 06 and Sonic Unleashed soundtracks, some of Ohtani's best non-synth work comes from those two games!
@noba04 Жыл бұрын
his most recent works are very synth EDM-type heavy but the dude has always been making a variety of tracks in different genres. lots of people dont realize that he also composed a good chunk of Sonic 06 and Unleashed which have more strings with some DnB slapped on top. he also helped compose the main themes for both of the games.

Everyone’s favorite people in the Sonic team are Crush 40 but for me it’s Ohtani. Wrote this ost which is my favorite, but also rooftop run (my favorite level theme). He also arranged reach for the stars (my 2nd favorite vocal track) and then he and a band were responsible for the Sonic ultimate version of reach for the stars (my favorite vocal track). His same band covered Endless Possibility (one of my favorites). The dude just arranges music that I adore.

Sonic’s always balanced being this very marketable mascot character, while also having this far “edgier” side to him, for lack of a better word. Games like Adventure 1/2, Black Knight, Unleashed- Tell stories with a lot of legitimate depth to them, and with games like these, Sonic’s grown this very stylish edge to him. It’s very shonen-y. Sega neglected that side of Sonic for a very long time, but Frontiers feels like it’s equal parts “a breath of fresh air” and “a return to form” for what the large majority of hardcore Sonic fans have grown to love the series for. The plot is somber, it deals with the concept of growth, mortality, and what it truly means to be remembered- and yet it’s been decades since these characters have even felt like themselves, and not just Mario-style mascots. It’s so refreshing, and the soundtrack is a reflection of this. The music goes all over the place, from these beautiful, somber, sweeping orchestral movements, to fast-paced, bombastic-yet-gritty 2010s style EDM, to the intense heavy metal of the boss/main themes, to even mournful piano ballads. Frontiers may not be perfect, but for all it does well it is an amazing game, and a stunning love-letter to the fans. I have never had as much faith in the series as I do now, and I can’t wait to see if you’ll do any more Frontiers’ reactions, as theres so much to enjoy within its OST.

The whole Sonic Frontiers soundtrack is actually very diversified :] The big metal themes are for Boss-fights only and they stand out a lot. But the game is actually filled with other genres like EDM (that is for the short "fast-paced" levels set in a digital dimension), and more orchestral music using a bunch of diverse instrument for the open-wold area! IMO the themes of the islands (open-zones) are really overlooked as a whole and people usually go for the big vocal themes and the EDM music. Hoping you will eventually make the other Boss-themes!

Believe it or not, it's not *completely* unprecedented for Sonic to have guest musicians like Kellin Quinn. Back in the day, Johnny Gioeli was a hard rock vocalist for Hardline and Axel Rudi Pell, and it shows when you hear his vocals in What I'm Made of, Live & Learn and Never Turn Back; and in Sonic & the Black Knight, Marty Friedman, the lead guitarist for Megadeth, and Emma Gelotte and Tinna Karlsdotter, the vocalists from All Ends, collabed with Gioeli on the final boss song With Me; they also got Jared Riddick from Bowling for Soup to do Endless Possibility, the theme for Sonic Unleashed. Also, they got Tyler Smyth from Danger Kids to work on tracks for 2 Sonic games before this, and he was an opener for Sleeping with Sirens iirc, as well as collabed with Quinn on Find Your Flame for this game.

Undefeatable is fantastic and makes a great first impression, but Break Through It All was the kind of heavy stuff I didn't know I needed to hear from a Sonic game, and the DRUMS on that one oh man. I did submit some Cyberspace tracks as well, so I look forward to that too! As others have mentioned, this game has a very diverse soundtrack. It's kind of hard to submit the island exploration themes since they're all orchestrated with seven movements for each island, changing movements every time you collect a Chaos Emerald on that island. But still, the movement OSTs are great too. You transform into Super Sonic at the end of each island, and get a kickass boss fight spectacle with great music.
@KazeMemaryu Жыл бұрын
Sonic's musical coverage is always a piece of musical trends among teens of the respective times. Back during the old SEGA days, it was a very synth-heavy pop/funk mix, which fit the late 80's/early 90's perfectly. With the transition to 3D, Sonic was reframed into a rock direction, aligning with the rock and metal craze of the early 2000's that eventually culminated with a wave of emo rock and nu metal lasting to this day. But Sonic Frontiers followed the rise of metalcore and alternative metal that we're seeing right now. The songs are never trendsetters, but they're prime examples of great music with a strong sense of style and fun. And Frontiers went above and beyond once again in delivering a style of music you never would've associated with Sonic, but it just works amazingly well! I can honestly recommend the other vocal tracks, especially "Break Through it All"!

Great to see you listening to Frontier's music! Frontiers, despite being relatively new, has already left a big impact. Sonic Team considers it the start of the "third generation" of Sonic games. It's broadly considered to the best game the series has had in a while and the soundtrack in particular has been widely praised even by Sonic standards. As others have mentioned, the ost for this game is very diverse with the metal tracks being specifically made for the bosses. Since Super Sonic hasn't been very prevalent in recent games, Ohtani wanted the boss tracks to be "powerful" and "iconic". Which, considering the game's ost titled "Stillness & Motion" hit #1 on Spotify in the US and #6 globally, is a goal I think he successfully attained.

I jumped with joy at seeing the notification ! What a fantastic thing to wake up to !! Welcome to Sonic Frontiers, we have : djent/heavy metal, beautiful ambient orchestral, not-so-ambient orchestral and SO MANY different kinds of EDM, including freaking lo-fi of all things, and other hodgepodges of beautiful sounds with driving techno elements ! Hi ! Real quick word of advice : there's official SEGA uploads of the whole Frontiers OST on youtube, you should go with those ! There are some fan recordings that have some splicing errors, because all the boss tracks do phase transitions. If, or when, you do the other Frontiers boss themes, please try to go in order ! The order is Undefeatable ( you are here ), then Break Through It All, then Find Your Flame, then I'm Here ( which is also the main theme of the game ). There is a final final boss track, but while it's imo a fantastic track, it's not a lyrical song, and definitely not in the same style as the others, so people generally don't recommend it for reactions. It's called I'm With You, if you're ever interested in checking it out. You may also get requested to listen to One Way Dream, which is the true ending theme, and Vandalize by ONE OK ROCK, which is the normal ending theme and a licensed song, so not made directly for this game. Have a nice day Jesse ! Thanks for the treat !

it is well worth noting that the lyrics of this song are from the perspective of Sonic. you can see his cocky attitude from lyrics like "think I'm on 11 but I'm on a 9", and "I'm what you get when the stars collide". You feel his undying will from the lyrics "I'm hanging on to the other side, I won't give up 'till the end of me". I could be wrong, but from my understanding or at least from the bits I've read and seen online. Tomoya Ohtani, who's one of the main Sonic music conposers and who composed this game. He writes and does all the music (not sure if he has other artists' come in and help with song writing or not as I could never find that imfo). On more then one occasion though he will typically bring in guest vocals to sing, I'm also not sure if it's a case that he sends them the track and has them write lyrics that they feel can go with the song or if he already has lyrics written.

One of my favorite things about this song and by extension the other songs is how easy it is to understand the lyrics. It's rare for a song of this nature to have actual lyrics you can comprehend.

Another song in this game is Break Through It All and it's probably the song that goes the hardest imo, good stuff.

Tomoya Ohtani composed this song, as well as many of the stage themes! =) Oh, that upload certainly has some compression. Frontiers' OST is uploaded on KZbin officially, so in case there's more Frontiers songs you'll react to, use those for the best audio quality! =D

Hope you decide to do the rest of the boss themes! The whole soundtrack is banger, but the boss themes CARRY the game. The fights, the atmosphere, the sound design, the animations, ALL of them are an experience.

Ah this song, wasn't super into it when I first heard it. It has very much grown on me. Where do I start with this one? The fade in is pretty cool and the heaviness of the guitars signify the size of the boss. I don't mind the riff but I'm not super sold on it. Now I'm gonna be honest, I don't really like the screams but they serve a purpose in the song so I tolerate them and I'll go into that later in this comment. That chorus is immaculate, perfect for Sonic. The riffs on the chorus are great and I really like them, the percussion emphasises Sonic speed in his super form. The synths at 3:50 signify the mysterious lonely tone of the game, I really like the change of the second verse. It's nice to have a break from the formula of second verses where they are exactly the same as the first except with different lyrics. The solo is so dope, the speed perfectly signifies how fast Sonic is in his super form and the part at 5:20 sound kind of like Through the Fire and the Flames which is pretty cool and the transition into the chorus is seamless. The backing vocals on the last chorus sound really great, the empowering feel of the song feels so awesome while fighting the boss. You feel powerful and that you can take on anything. Now I want to talk about the lyrics for this song. I'm going to skip lyrics that are obvious statements, "I'm hanging on to the other side" is basically referencing back to him previously saving the world where it seemed impossible but he hanged on and was able to overcome it. "Welcome to the mind of a different kind, where we've been growing slowly" is a reference to how his mind set is different from when he first fought this boss and has been collecting the emeralds to go super. "Think I'm on eleven, but I'm on a nine" is Sonic being confident in this form saying how the boss thinks he's going past his best when he's not even giving his all against this boss. "Been down this road before already know this story" this is basically Sonic saying he's done this before and knows how this fight will end. Now the screams of "face your fears" doesn't make sense for Sonic's character since screams and growls in music usually signify pain, agony, anger etc. which isn't Sonic's character although I think these screams are from the ancients telling Sonic to face his fears since the fear of the unknown is something most fear. It's basically just a voice in the back his head which he pushes through with the chorus. The chorus lyrics are basically just Sonic showing his confidence, that he'll never give up and that the boss is screwed lol, especially with the final lyric before the woes calling the boss a normal enemy. (I want to quickly make a note that the lyric "I'm what you get when the stars collide" is super raw and one of my favorite lyrics from a Sonic vocal theme). The second verse seems pretty self explanatory, although I do not think the scream on "crystal clear" is fitting of Sonic's character personally. The end of the song is just Sonic reiterating what he said before. Overall I like the song, it's pretty good and I'd probably really love it if the screams weren't in it.

Gush you say? Well alright. The song itself is amazing and it's no wonder that everyone was from the start screaming "undefeatable." however there's far more to it than that... Allow me to paint you the picture. Imagine yourself holding a bar representing your expectations from past sonic games. Even a bit worn out due to their recent losses. The bar is around.... waist level. Then this big gigantic mechanical monster just wanders over to you, grabs that bar from your hand, smashes it over it's knee and then starts BLASTING this theme song and starts fucking moshing. your mouth agape and just completely stunned. That is the feeling you get when you reach the point of this song. The tone of the game itself is very somber, as your uncovering and exploring the mystery of the island. Slow piano music and a rainy grass covered highland covered in ruins... Mysterious machines all about. You then get your first encounter with the boss and you get... ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED. A single stomp sends you flying, you try to do damage but even the sound of your attacks just feels like you're doing *nothing* to this guy. He then proceeds to grab you like the little shit you are and just DUMPSTERS you. "TFFF OOOH... Just... Just walk it off sonic just walk it o-.. Okay you know what sleeping is good to... Just don't move towards the light." After that you prepare for round two gathering the emeralds where all but one are found... And so you proceed onward only to find the boss has the emerald on it's head. And so you experience FIRST HAND HOW BIG THIS THING IS climbing it and mentally understanding the gravity of what your about to face.. you reach the head... pick up the emerald.. The music goes silent and you turn super... And then the camera pands out behind gigantio as super sonic descends.. All of us who saw it the first time were in shock and awe... And then as he is descending you hear the start of the strings, the "I'm hanging on to the other side..." And after that first bit he cracks a smile ready for round two... And then the music starts going OFF while the pop off menu pops up almost by design as everyone and I mean every person I've seen just stops whilst reading it and is just bewildered but then rushes through it and almost by design launches into the fight by the words "GO!" as it's screamed at you and you see a super sonic unlike before. All your moves are what you've done the entire game but blown up to an eleven. Energy fists are flying and everyone is like "HWHAHAHA WHAT!? IS THIS REAL!? AM I ALLOWED TO DO THIS!? IS SONIC PEAK AGAIN!?" And that first time you saw super sonic and the hype you felt as a kid rushes back as you just slap the ever loving piss out of giganto. I wouldn't say they are hard or easy. it's a bit of trial and error usually due to the ring limit and folks taking a bit of damage on the ascent and being on the super sonic clock. but the cinemetography along with the music, the stage inwhich your fighting, and the moves that you're pulling off, along with the sense of scale? It leads to an absolute incredible feeling that absolutely carried this game and is probably why people feel hope again. They can be a little jank but you accept it because what you see is so absolutely wild and cool that you love it inspite of it being a lil funky due to how unique it feels and just how well everything comes together. The giganto fight is genuinely the "Oh shit!" moment of frontiers that immediatly won people over in this game. It set the stage for this game and quickly shifted the mentality that people had for frontiers. I mean hell the issue's I thought existed from the ign footage and my fears still ring true? and yet it's a 7/10 game I love like a 10/10. It made me love video games again after so much FOMO burn out. There's one qoute that I feel like fit's the boss fights in this game. "This has big 2002 AMV energy and I'm absolutely here for it." they somehow captured that time period and put it into a game both spiritually and mechanically... The counter parry's are SO FREAKING JUICY. You feel like a freakin rock star all through out these bombastic boss fights. Everyone seems to love find your flame more (third theme) but man undefeatable and giganto absolutely paved the fucking road. The one time where I feel like the cinematic trailer and the game live up to one another.

Been a Sonic fan since the 90's, never thought I'd see djent style metal in a Sonic game. Absolutely wild, even if it isn't my personal favorite of the songs in the game. Also if you're interested, check out one of my favorite covers of Flying Battery Zone by LongestSoloEver, it's insanely good.
