Sonic Generations Modern M-speed & D-speed Tutorial

M-speed and D-speed can be done on console and PC versions of Sonic Generations, and it hasn’t been patched. *Note that this exploit is less accessible on PC and often requires up-right or up-left tilts for M-speed* Sonic X Shadow Generations Update: M-speed and D-speed work in the remaster as well. Similar to the PC port of base Generations, tilt M-speed up-left or up-right for more effective results. Straightforward M-speed isn’t as effective as it is on base Generations consoles.

Everything here works the same but there's a larger margin of error for the analog positions, so it's easier to do in Unleashed

Not to mention at least Unleashed has far less invisible walls to forcibly snap Sonic back in place of the path. The levels also load faster unlike in Unleashed as well (Green Hill and City Escape are the guiltiest examples of these invisible wall and level loading issues).

0:30 okay im on ps5 SXSG trying to do air d speed I tilted the analog stick and did the exact same inputs you did but I got no momentum for d speed to activate, or do I have to time my jumps? Note: I can pull off d speed with classic since he's easier to me, but now im just trying to figure modern out 😂

Modern Air D-speed is more restricted than on the older console versions of the game. In white space, it only really works around the Crisis City hub. Other than that there are very few places where it can be used

For D-speed do you have to slightly hold the analog stick up as well? I know you have to slightly hold it for left/right but I'm not sure about up. Edit: Does a lower frame rate have anything to do with how much speed you pick up? I was trying on my PC running at 60fps and never got it as fast as the example at 0:25 but when I tried on 360 at 30fps I got a lot of speed

Just tilt the L-stick left or right. You don't need to tilt it up or down unless the camera is angled forward or backward. The rate at which Sonic accelerates is often inconsistent, but it tends to be more lenient on console since the Xbox/PlayStation versions are less stable than the PC version

This tutorial is super well done and it helped me understand better the mechanics of Sonic Generations. But holy sh*t I can't perform the M-speed no matter how many times I try. I feel like I'm doing something wrong but I might just be bad.

M-speed requires a lotta precision and only certain tilts such as up-right M-speed work in some locations, especially on PC. The Shadow Rival Boss has open runways to launch and experiment with M-speed so that may be a good place to practice

So in 2:25 you said to how to trigger M-Speed. Got the gentle tilt but didn't get the how to keep it because I only activated it for like split 2 seconds, and then it just slows me down while I fall back down. So... do I have to keep it in that position? Or do I put it in a different tilt direction... if I need to keep it then oh boii that's gonna be a pikel, cuz right when in use the x button and a button, my thumb just keeps getting it off.

You gotta keep the L-stick held in place the entire time. Just keep your left thumb steady with that input and jump to maintain speed

M-speed in Generations does indeed demand more precision than in Unleashed, and only tilts like up-right M-speed work in certain areas. Stages with long runways like the Shadow rival boss stage are good places to practice getting a feel for M-speed control, hope that helps

In PS5, the 'zone' where your joystick needs to be is so accurate that it's basically almost impossible to maintain the M and D speeds. It's also harder to achieve. Idk how PC players can do this consistently. :((( I wanna be able to emulate the PS3 version so bad.

Welp....honestly, I have no idea why this feature returned from Unleashed in an obviously-overlooked manner. And it's a game that unlike Unleashed, Generations' level design doesn't fully take advantage of such speed. Legit the levels fail to load with a ton of invisible walls snapping you back in place of a predetermined railroad. The skins in Unleashed with this bug have looked better in comparison. Goes to show how more railroaded the levels started to get since Colors.

Heyyy! First off great video the editing is outstanding. I'm having a lot of trouble with this lol. Do you have any tips to make it more consistent? Sometimes i hit one great jump with M-speed but then when i move the joystick a little bit and suddenly it doesn't work. I'm trying to work on that at the moment because i won't be able to do full IL's if i hit m-speed once in 50 attempts

Thank you! There isn’t really an easy way to pull off M-speed manually aside from building the muscle memory for it. Alternatively, you can use something to hold the control stick in place to lock yourself into one M-speed direction, while controlling the D-pad. There’s also an exploit for it on PC, but I’ll be explaining that in a future video

I consistenly triggered d speed between these areas but couldnt pull it off anywhere else. Moreover whenever i did trigger it, superspeed would automatically stop mid jump if i exceeded the areas where it did work. Any idea why?

Yeah the PC version is weird, I noticed that too. It’s most likely just more restricted in the same way that D-speed in general is more restricted on PC, fewer areas where it can be activated than on PS3/Xbox360

The L-stick must be held just outside of the deadzone for M-speed, it’s a much smaller input than Air D-speed

To maintain m-speed and d-speed, the L-stick must be held in the same position. M-speed direction can alternate, but pushing the L-stick any further will not trigger it.

The inputs for m-speed and d-speed are pressure-sensitive so you will need a controller for this. For the pc version I use an xbox controller with a wireless receiver, it's nothing too pricey. Good luck!
