Goal ring #5 took me 35 minutes to find in the first playthrough xD. This is a pretty cool concept though. I'd like to see the map change more each time you beat a special ring. Also if the special rings took you to actual stages instead of special stages, I think that'd make a super cool open world idea for Sonic. Also this game is around 11GBs. gg

Edit: I spent around 30 minutes looking for a final boss, couldn't find anything. Either I'm blind or it might not be in the version I'm playing. I know there's an extra level in the Patreon version though.

what i really wanna see out of this engine is semi-open world levels. big, multi path levels with lots to find and do but still tight enough to figure out where the goal is at. for people who like collecting, go around and find rings, flickys and maybe the chaos emeralds or some new jewels for speed runny people just go fast and find the best route

The Laser Blaster in SA2 is actually pretty helpful in comboing because of well, its mechanic! One missle shot from that thing can do a 3x3 Square of Hit Range!

An open world concept is interesting for a stage, however you can't do it properly if you have linear pathing for just one goal. Usually, open worlds are best utilized and more interesting to explore if you have puzzles scattered around, basically multiple objectives, all geared towards one singular progression. The pathing is around the field rather than in a few select spots. It also promotes greater exploration. Take Legend of Zelda BoTW for an example. You have to path to multiple areas to progress in a singular direction. If done properly, an open world for Sonic stages rather them being simple hub worlds would and could work really well. So far, I like the idea....

This is a stage, not a fully open world RPG. You cant possibly compare BOTW, because that play style would not work for a stage that is meant to have replayability

@@28grams83 Not necessarily true. Stages from the Sonic Adventure games were re-playable and had areas that could be explored. An open world for each stage would serve to greatly increase that. Plus, I personally think open worlds might just make games even better. If you're worried about something like time records, then the stage is there and linear, but the rest is open, available, and explore-able for any player who's interested. This style could expand upon the missions too which each stage in SA2 had about 5 of. You can't say that playstyle won't work when it was used before and quite successful. SA2, best Sonic Game ever made.

@@JoshTGW First of all those were adventure fields, not stages. This is a time based open world stage, using Special stages to break up chunks, if they were making an RPG, sure the BOTW take might work. We are talking about a game thats main gameplay feature is going fast however, to slow down the gameplay to such a pace would create an entirely different feeling and wouldnt be true to the sonic playstyle. If this were an adventure field then I most definitely agree with you, however, its not its a stage and that just wouldnt work here.

The objective of this stage was to complete the special stages and collect all 7 emeralds as fast as possible, it wasnt meant to be an open world you take your time exploring, but rather something you were speeding through

I think the environment is nice, the special stages are cool. Though some work could be done because as is, it's kinda pointless. In terms of world-building, it's a bit weak. Those FC's and also Dr. Robotron. They are both kinda iffy and also not matching with each other. The cloaked figures I could almost give a pass to but they did seem pretty typical for fan story ideas, as is the writing in the cutscenes. Not just in concept, but also in dialogue. No one talks like that. But to be fair, I remember writing like that when I was younger. I think it's one of those things you just have to get used to doing a lot and will, hopefully, improve on as the years go by. The person obvious at least has ideas. That's a start. I wasn't able to make a whole little fan game like this with my writing.

@@acuman99.9 yeah it's kind of weird, I tried spin dashing a few times and rip gaining more speed. Now that I think about it I think you do gain speed going down hills, it's just that there's a cap you usually hit. You also lose speed going uphill but the boost will neglect that.

@@sonicovertime that makes sense. Now that I think about it that was true in adventure 2 battle (my favorite 3d sonic engine). I'm very partial to the classic games. He would increase if he was a ball but there was a cap when he was on foot. Like in city escape, running 90 degrees down a wall maintaining the pace. I guess the code didn't have 9.8 m/s from gravity in it.

This is basically just lazy blue spheres and big empty areas with snow or water. Doesn't even feel like a game, it feels more like a test area that the developer got bored with.
