this title is so funny to me considering that Hydrocity is basically the best water level in the series, as it rewards you for playing well by keeping you above the water as long as possible. I think aquatic ruin from sonic 2 is also pretty good about this

I would like to add instructions on some of the movement actions, if that's okay. You did figure most of it out (regardless of chat lol) but I feel like this might clear some things up. If that counts as needless backseating, just ignore this comment! You are doing great Marco!! Note that the side-directional buttons have no effect on any of these! Spin-dash: While standing still, hold down-directional, and TAP the jump button repeatedly (the more you tap before letting go, the bigger the boost!) Drop-dash: While jumping, release, then start HOLDING the jump button again until you land to get an instant speed-boost (useful if you don't have the opportunity to stand still for a normal spindash. Holding down-directional is NOT necessary here) Flying with Tails: Hold up, and then TAP the jump button repeatedly while close by to Tails to grab on. Tapping jump again in the air will make you go up. Hold down and jump to let go immediately.

I'm imagining your reaction to other Sonic water levels cause Hydrocity is arguably the best and most fun of the water levels.

It's one of the best water levels in all of gaming. Though honestly Sonic's no stranger to good water levels. There's been more good than bad water levels in Sonic games. Mario and DKC also have a lot of good ones. Sadly outside of those franchises... good water levels are pretty rare (but they do exist). He doesn't seem to have the basic common sense to grab air bubbles though. He should stay away from water in real life because I don't think he'll figure out that he needs air regularly.

I’ve noticed significant improvement in Flying battery (And getting to bosses faster in levels after) you’re doing great!

I haven’t watched the stream in its entirety, but if you haven’t figured it out yet: to spin dash just crouch and spam jump. You don’t need to just rev it once. To drop dash while you are in your ball form in the air, hold the jump button until you hit the ground. there’s no timing involved.

Don't worry too much about "not being good". Sonic games are notoriously difficult to get into, especially the Classic style games like this since they don't explain anything to you. One little tip: If an enemy has a weak spot near the ground, remember that you can roll (press down while running) to attack enemies. Very useful when an enemy is at an awkward angle for you to jump against. In order to do the drop dash, briefly let go of the jump button in midair, and then hold it down until you touch the ground. The longer you hold, the more it will charge up.

Dude, they're not difficult they're into. They're very easy to get into. Sonic 1 you can only run and roll. Sonic 2 you get a spindash. Sonic 3 has a bit more. And Mania adds a drop dash. There's not a whole lot to understand. Thing is, old games have things explained in the manual. And Sonic Mania also explains things in an in-game menu. The problem here is the scrub gamer expectation that literally everything needs to be explained through unavoidable tutorials. But that's moreso a problem with modern scrub gamers who have a hard time figuring out how to do a basic jump without a boring tutorial section rather than it being hard. There being a difference between mashing a button and holding down a button is also a concept they seem to have a hard time grasping. Can't expect them to dive into the menu to figure out controls or to grab a manual and actually read something physical.

Idk if you know Marco but if you hold up and press jump twice you can have tails fly you! One if the best things about Mania🤌🫡
