Escape from Noise is my absolute favorite record album ever. I was so lucky to grow up in the Bay Area and an avid listener of KPFA. I can’t think of a more brilliant band, nor one that has produced more content.

I was working at a college radio station when the U2 album came out. I heard it was being recalled and I ran down to the station to steal it before the station manager could send it back but someone had already grabbed it.

I kept hoping that U2 would write a hit song called “Negativland” and give the proceeds to Negativland. Still haven’t found what I’m looking for….

Negativland is the best art group in modern American memory, at least among white dudes. I am one of the lucky people who, when preordering The Chopping Channel, received a tape cart and some of Don Joyce's ashes. The weirdest thing in my already weird collection of stuff; Joyce is a mad genius (and I know how platitudinous and blasé that word sounds now, as used as it has been). Thank you for reuploading this - I was very upset that previous uploads have been taken down. Boo capitalism, boo Google, long live Negativland!!!

Their attitude reminds me of Australian band TISM. It would appear that they started about the same time.

These ideas are just as valid (if not more so) today, June 30, 2024, as they were when this documentray was made. If there was ever a time that culture needed jamming, it's NOW!

Incredible doc on such an incredible and thought-provoking band/movement, thanks for sharing this. As someone who plays traditional folk music and who's interested in avantgarde music, I love the connections they kept drawing between their kind of sonic collage and folk culture - the way they both reuse and build on cultural production that's come before. Very inspiring! And boy, did were those comments ever prescient about the privatization of the internet and internet utopianism as a shoehorn for eventual oppression.

Regarding Negativland's "U2" release, Negativland were not the ones who (according to the lawsuit) tried to profit on U2's brand. It was the record shops! 1) Record shops have regular distributors - didn't the shops wonder why this "U2 release" did not come from their regular distributor of products from Island Records? 2) Record shops also read music papers. Did e.g. Billboard bring any news back then regarding a U2 release titled "Negativland"? Noooo! 3) A U2 release is something a record shop would listen to/play in their shop - and doing so the record shops would immediately realise that this release was NOT a U2 release. So when Tower Records decided to dedicate an entire shopwindow to Negativland's release Tower Records actually tried to fool their customers into believing they bought a product made by U2. I wonder why no one tried to bring this to attention!
