I'm a switch user for most of these games. And legit the only one I really think was worth mentioning was Frontiers. And that's only because the looks just that much worse on Switch than any of the other ports. I have arguablybhad a better time with these versions of the games though since, even though the graphics took a slight hit, the switch controls honestly feel very responsive and smooth. And honestly, when it comes to games like Forces specifically, that's a plus for me since I mostly don't enjoy the game due to the bad physics and controls. So yeah, I'd say for even more die-hard Sonic fans like myself, the only thing that would have been worth bring up would have been Frontiers, as it's the most relevant to what he's talking about. Everything else is just kind of nit picks.

You have to understand they are already severely limiting games like Frontiers with the Switch in mind. That's why every version of the game has horrifically hard coded pop in, that you can only partly resolve on PC. The only way to make games run really great on Switch is to build separate games for it. And we don't want to go back to that era of Sonic. Things will get a bit better when the Switch 2 comes out. It's not SEGA's fault that the Switch is significantly weaker 2 and a half generations behind in power.

Not a graphical difference but fun fact... the switch port of Team Sonic Racing is missing the opening CGI cutscene that is present in every other version.

I believe they said they didn't have enough cartridge space, but they never added it in the digital version or added it as a free update/patch

It is to save on the Switch tax. By removing the CGI cutscene, they can use a much smaller card with a lower Switch tax, then they can sell the game cheaper. They could have put it in a patch but they obviously didn't see the point in taking away space from the switch for it.
@GenerationZ3133 ай бұрын
I find their reasoning for not having it absurd, especially since Team Sonic Racing was included in a physical double pack that also included Sonic Mania on the same cartridge. But when it comes to Sonic, SEGA cannot ignore Nintendo The main problem is that modern Sonic games are still developed with major consoles in mind find, I don't know if it would be better for Sonic Team to develop these games with the Switch as the base console, but then there would be people complaining that the games are limiting their scope by the Switch

Sonic Mania is actually less blurry on Switch than on most other platforms, since the display scales evenly up to the tablet's 720p screen, as opposed to the uneven 1080p of other consoles which induces slight blur even with the filter set to none. This can be remedied by playing on a 1440p or 4K display, which are both 2x and 3x 720p respectively.

Plus the game drops frames when you use the black Wisp item sometimes

It is worth noting that even though Superstars does have the target 60 fps on Switch when you start doing co-op the game tends to struggle A LOT more performance wise and it has noticeably dipped below 30 at times when playing it co-op with a friend. It might be due to more things happening at once and the camera needing to zoom out more.

I think that when the Switch 2 is released, all future sonic games will no longer have these problems. Even if the PS6 and whatever the next Xbox is called is released, Sonic will never have as realistic graphics as most Sony and Microsoft games, so the Switch 2 will have more than enough power for Sonic forever

I got Sonic Frontiers on my Switch for Christmas 2022 (since I didn't have PlayStation or Xbox yet) and honestly, the lower graphics didn't really bother me that much during my playthrough of it. I'm thinking of getting the PS4 port for the better performance, though I'm still keeping Mania and Origins installed on my Switch since they run perfectly fine in my eyes. And seeing how well Sonic Superstars handles on Switch, I might get around to playing that version as well. Switch ports are definitely inferior, but they have a bit of charm in my eyes.

The depth of field effect is not making it easier to render. Depth of Field actually can be quite expensive, the reason why the switch DoF looks the way it does is because DoF is resolution based. Often games end up having a stronger DoF when the resolution is lower and this was very present in the 7th and 8th gen consoles. My assumption for the Switch version of Colors Ultimate running at 30fps is most likely because of the engine switch and change in lighting. If the Switch ran the original Wii version of course it could run at 60fps but Ultimate changes things like lighting and other aspects Frontiers is understandable. The PS4 and Xbox One versions of Frontiers only ran at 30fps unlike the PS5 and Series S|X versions which all had a 60fps mode. The lack of foliage and lower quality textures are both on the GPU as well as RAM. The Switch has half the RAM of the PS4 and Xbox One so they had to cut down texture resolution. They also had cut the baked global illumination system they had to help reduce the size of the game as well making the game look even more flat than the home console versions too. I'm surprised the kept the screen space reflections as those are often cut from switch games to get more performance Mania looks identical to my eyes playing both the PC and Switch version. Superstars is a very light game to run even on PC. Honestly I'm surprised the PS5 and Series S|X don't have a 120fps mode. The ROG Ally can easily hit 120fps as well as the Deck OLED being able to do a full 90fps. Not surprised at all that the switch game runs at 60fps

As someone who has every sonic switch port, yeah they’re pretty inconsistent. As long as you’re not playing a 3D Sonic game you should be fine. Although Forces and frontiers are still playable, I would NOT recommend colors ultimate as it’s not possible to 100% the game because when loading up rival rush the game will always crash

Considering how underpowered the switch is compared to the ps5 & series x, it somehow keeps up in frontiers

So, a lesser known thing, (and note I dont get my Sonic games on other consoles so maybe it applies to them) is at least on Nintendo Switch, Sonic games don't use the Home button the way most games. Most games will stop everything when you press it, but Sonic games (and some others) don't do that. Instead, they'll just use the in-game pause function when available (which is a good bandaid solution). A good way to notice, go to the home menu at a main menu, and when you press Home again, and the music doesn't resume. You're at a later part of music. I have no idea why they do this. Other Sega games like the Persona series use it properly

I have never had any problems with playing sonic games on switch. Playing alot of the older games on console kinda made me just get used to it. Like I replayed Gears of war 1 on xbox 360 and that game is like 25 fps, hell I even played Max payne 1 on ps2 and that game has unlocked frames, but it could go from 10 fps or 60 at will. Playing stuff like Frontiers, team sonic racing, colors or even forces on switch is okay to me, even though playing it on other consoles and/or pc will have it at 60 with increased graphics. Im just glad that the games is on switch even though they're technically worse performing, but that has to be expected because the switch isn't as powerful as the other options.

Golden rule with multiplatform games is that you only buy Switch ports if all you own is a Switch. If you own a PlayStation, Xbox or PC then you are better off buying multiplatform games on those instead. No amount of portability is worth having worst frame rates, load times and graphics.

Here’s my take as someone who’s a Sonic fan that only owns a Switch: Honestly, it doesn’t really bother me that much. Yes, part of it is because I don’t have anything to compare it to, but that’s beside the point. At a certain point, it becomes a question of “Do I wanna play it or not,” and obviously the answer is yes. Before you ask (and go ahead and make fun of me, I don’t care), I have a Mac as my main computer.

So, with Forces and I think all the other games, they have it so the control input is 60hz rather than 30, so even though the games framerate is 30, the controls are still running as if it was 60

@@SFproductions1 good, even if the game looks 30fps, the inputs are like when it's at 60fps. So you don't have a big input delay while the switch doesn't have to be stressed much.

If I remember correctly, Sonic Mania was developed with Sega Saturn restrictions in mind, meaning that in theory it could be made ported to run on the Saturn. If the Switch didn’t run it the same as the other consoles (aside from the graphical fidelity), that would be criminal lol
@Shrock5683 ай бұрын
The Switch being portable should justify how much or little of a downgrade compared to the dedicated console versions. Sonic Frontiers, in my opinion, is the only Sonic game where the downgrades are so severe, that it’s not worth it being portable. Get it on anything else if you can.
@leothehuman_94763 ай бұрын
It doesn't justify it being portable, modern phones or PC handhelds like the steam deck are far more powerful than a switch, in fact they emulate it at even higher resolutions. The switch should have recieved a hardware upgrade because it is literally a 2017 tablet.
@jerryalexis5763 ай бұрын
Sonic Forces on Switch, though downgraded, is still surprisingly good looking on its own. You would need to compare it side by side to notice the difference except for framerates.

Am I the only one who likes how Frontiers looks on Switch? I mean the lighting is even better than Forces, the reflections are really good and so are the colors. Plus Cyberspace looks almost identical to their new gen counterpart. I mean it's gonna look a lot better on an actual TV. Plus did you know that the Switch version of Forces has some effects exclusive to the Switch in dock mode? If you cross the bridge in Ghost Town in dock mode, it will have sunrays. No other version of Forces does that, not even new gen versions. Same with Space Port. On the part before the train QTE, the background has a blurry effect. And it's not a graphic cut, because if it was, it would be on handheld mode aswell. Plus some stages' graphical design changed in order to fit the hardware. For example Null Space replacing glass with metallic surfaces and the big circle of glass on the other versions is a cool green laser ring on the Switch. And this one's on handheld aswell.
