They stopped playing after the last Black Knight Boss fight and the false credits started playing, which means they never got to any of the later levels, play as the other characters, or fight the true final boss as Excalibur Sonic

I think only Sonic could do it. It did take over the world in the 90s and grew a passionate fanbase that saw him at peak potential and just never left as they kept making fan content and telling people that it is possible for Sonic to be good again. I also think the fact there has been a cartoon on air at all times for 30 years helps introduce him to younger people every generation who also get to see his potential.

His appeal and popularity definitely helped, but I also think that Sonic being shuffled around until he finally landed in the hands of competent people is what ultimately rescued it. Fadel how many crazy intros can you possibly come up with I can't fathom this lol Seriously though i haven't finished watching the video due to the length as of now currently doing so but my stance to most of Sonic's metacritic score on his games are due to unrefinement on certain mechanics or shifts in gameplay that probably threw people off and made them not like it. For example reviewers probably were so used to the adventure gameplay so at the time when heroes released when the team based gameplay was introduced they were probably thrown off by it so much and thought it wasn't as good as the previous games at the time which made them dislike it same with unleashed the werehog was outta left field so people saw it and just brushed it off as a gow clone and said it wasn't "sonic" but as fans of the series we've come to appreciate aspect of certain games and what they did before not all of the experimental stuff was good but it was cool to see them take risks But at the end of the day it's better to play the games for yourself then make your own opinion on it then listen to two numbers of metacritic at least thats what I do.

One interesting takeaway from this is the fact that for a LARGE chunk of the series, it seems that hardcore fans and critics/possibly general audience had completely opposite tastes. Critics hate the games the fanbase loves, while they love the games that the fanbase hates. 😂

Yeah Metacritic, and every review for any game is.. an obstacle course. Rarely does any game score highly Also i felt tired that the soundtracks were rarely deep dived into. Since i have been writing for an electronic music blog Electrofans (for several years now) and Sonic tunes flow, and hits every genre. I had to. And the best part? It seems to be receiving more love. And I'm happy to support the Sonic series, including its music. Because it is a part of us all, like a heartbeat.

The craziest part of the SA2 reviews for me is the "lack of replayability" complaint. Like WHAT?! SA2 is LITERALLY the most replayable Sonic game, even if you don't fuck with it. There's the 3 story campaigns, then the missions for all the levels, A ranking all the missions, collecting all the emblems which unlocks GREEN HILL, with its OWN missions to A rank, the full ass Kart racing game with multiple characters and karts, the multiplayer mode, the CHAO GARDEN, which has you going back to levels over, and over, and over, and over again to collect animals, and Chaos Drives, and rings, hundreds if not thousands of times, for even a single chao LET ALONE a full garden, OF WHICH THERE ARE 3!, And there's all the customization and evolution mechanics to get new types of chao, all the races and the Karate. You could spend the rest of your natural life on Sonic Adventure 2. The chao gardens and how they integrate with the regular gameplay, incentivizing you to replay levels to collect items to raise chao, it's basically an infinite collect-a-thon with the customization of a Pokemon game, it's NUTS. Insane take. PSYCHOTIC take. FULLY detached from reality. Even if you HATE SA2, that's just FACTUALLY wrong, there's an ungodly amount of shit to do in that game.

Overall, I have to agree that most of the critics’ takes were pretty fair. There was definitely some bias against the franchise post-Sonic 06 that could be taken too far in places, but I think if we’re being honest with ourselves, as much as we all love them now, there is a lot to criticize about the late 2000’s era of Sonic games. That was an era of the series where Sega was basically prioritizing just getting as many games on shelves as possible, Sonic Team was being stretched fairly thin as a result, and the series was struggling to find a new identity for itself after the critical failure of Sonic 06, which led to people being confused as to what Sonic as a franchise even wanted to be anymore, and justifiably so. … Critics were also fairly harsh to the franchise during the mid-2010s, but that was fully justified since that era really was just incredibly mid, lmao.

@GamesCage LOL yeah, there were definitely a few games that got hard-carried by the circumstances surrounding their release, like Secret Rings coming out so close to 06 that it made it look better by comparison, Chronicles being developed by Bioware right around the peak of Mass Effect’s popularity, and Sonic 4 Episode 1 being that back-to-basics game people really wanted at the time before Colors and Generations came out.

Ign had given the Dreamcast version of sa1 an 8.5/10 And had given sa2 (DC) a 9.2/10. Great walk down memory lane! While some of the critics had agreeable, fair points, others were simply being mean. The one that offended me the most was Yahoo!'s score & criticism of SA2. I don't remember if that was my first Sonic game in general or if it was my first 3-D Sonic game, but regardless, it's my favorite game ever. I know it has its jank, but the music is fucking incredible!!! I'll always defend that game because it's very special to me. When it comes to any game in any franchise, I never listen to critics. The most I'll do before purchasing a new game is watch it being played on YT and then form my own opinions based on how I see the game. Yeah, SA2 is my favorite game in this franchise but I also love Shadow the Hedgehog despite its bad reputation. Shadow Gens is also in my Top 3 list of Sonic games. Hell, if I ever get the chance to play Sonic '06, I'd probably have a good time with it because of its ambition and character portrayal. When I see its broken gameplay, I get sad because it really does have a lot of great potential to be the great game it was supposed to be. Sonic Unleashed is another one I'm curious about playing one day. I absolutely love the Werehog. I think I'd appreciate his unique gameplay
