It's kinda mind-boggling that people say this boss is overused. Not only is it the perfect example of Eggman actually fighting rather than having some old deity do it or piloting some ship, it gets the message of the series' Nature vs Man vibe. Plus it also shows how much of an egomaniac Eggman is, it is literally his face obstructing Sonic's way.

Beleive it or not, the giant robot in the Sonic 2 movie is not The Death Egg Robot, I think, it is actually the final boss of Sonic 3. You can tell by it's size, it's hands instead of spikes, and the fact that it was powered with the master emerald. Again, just a theory.

Tbh your theory is just not making any sense, It WAS Death Egg Robot right to your eyes. The size of the mech in Sonic 3 is almost as same as Death Egg though, the hand is just because of their redesign to make it more functional while in battle with Sonic, if the hand is with spikes instead, I don't think they would do anything to Sonic, make him drop his rings?
