The level design is just Chunks of Random terrain (the kind you’d find in the distant background of an open world game with no collision) connected by homing attack chains.

I think what we’re seeing here would be best used as a short reward for a very high pathway, rewarding the player with a fast aerial route, soaring over some beautiful level terrain. The novelty of this fangame wears off when we’re legit doing this for half an hour, but flying with Sonic is indeed novel. I think this would’ve been very nice as a pathway.

well this looks like a whole load of nothing "Fly over everything" is a common complaint when it comes to 3D Sonic fangames and while it's often inaccurate, this game seems to straight up embody that. You have no choice but to fly over everything because you spend most of the game in the air, homing attacking clouds. And when you are on the ground it's almost always completely flat meaning there's nothing for the player to really engage with. It's just go up in the air > homing attack clouds > land > repeat. This might sound a little mean but I wish the Sonic fanbase would let the Infinity Engine fade into obscurity already. It was neat for the first few months (and I get it's easy to work with since you get a fully featured playable Sonic ready to go) but seeing it power almost every other 3D Sonic fangame and them all feeling the same due to having to design around how overpowered Sonic is is disheartening. It's a massive creativity killer because Sonic can just blow through any "level design" you throw at him with minimal thinking. Apparently this is the first Sonic fangame to use Unreal Engine 5 which is neat I guess but at the end of the day it's nothing more than yet another generic Infinity Engine piece.

This game being in UE5 may explain why this game seems to be based on the *original* Infinity Engine rather than it's forks like Velocity+ Only the Original base Infinity Engine is ported to UE5, while it's forks are still in UE4 At least, that's AFAIK

The skydiving (and being able to boost with it) should be something Tails or Knuckles can do. I could see the mechanic working with a more thematically appropriate character, a stricter energy meter along with less open and more vertical level design. That way you either go the safe and slow approach of finding ways to get up or the fast yet riskier approach of managing your speed and control.

The beginning part made me think of Forces' airboost where you can keep going as long as you don't let go and your boost is still filled.

Infinity's freefall mechanic always seemed interesting to me, but it's something that probably would've fitted better with Knuckles or even a new IP. Momentum-based flight mechanics can be really fun, but you'd need less floaty gravity and a lot more scenery.

The last time I saw (and played) a Sonic fangame that used the Infinity Engine was Sonic Omens, so seeing this has me a bit skeptical 💀

I feel like the non-euclidean environments as a game-wide theme is an interesting idea, since Sonic games tend to dance around the idea with special stages but rarely do anything with it in terms of a standard level, with some exceptions. However, I feel like the whole skyfall bit would be more appropriate as a gimmick for a single zone or even level rather than the entire game. Makes it feel a bit one-note.

Whatever it ends up being; It’s probably going to curb stomp Sonic Omens into a million pieces. I should download this & play it, but my impressions going off of a KZbin video is as follows: - The level design (primarily in Nanite Nimbus) needs to be shrunkated, with smaller set-pieces & more of them, with a clear linear path. A lot of the segments here feel too long to the point that the boost meter already has been/on the verge of being depleted by 3/4ths the way to the next one. Nanite Nimbus feels more like SA1 Prototype Windy Valley, in not the good way, with too many redundant elements, & not really having a clear linear goal. Bigger isn’t necessarily better. - everything else: it doesn’t have any of Omens’ BS. Shadow just having 1 power instead of 4 I can take, especially since Omens didn’t use any of Shadow’s powers well. The models don’t have that uncanny iris glow either.

Have you tried out the Sonic Unleashed UE4 remake? It uses vanilla IE, but it changes the engine in MANY ways. See that game for yourself.
