Episode 1 is a reconstruction of the first part in 1991. There is no innovation or creativity in it. The same places, but with better graphics, even the gameplay, and the physics are very bad. Episode 2 is somewhat better, and there are different and new places, but with the same bad physics.

Sonic 4 episodes 1 and 2 only have 10 zones excluding Episode Metal, because that's just Episode 1 levels with Metal Sonic. Sonic 3 on it's own may have 6 zones, but combined with S&K gives us 14 zones, because Sonic 3 & Knuckles was how the game was originally designed. But that's just a theory: a GAME THEORY!

It's not as long. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles has 23 zones in total (Hidden Palace Zone is act 3 of Lava Reef Zone).

i will never get the criticism of this game, the only thing i don't like is the music in the sonic 1 special stage, the music in general is kinda dull, but i honestly think senoue shouldn't really bother to replicate the sound of the genesis games at all and just go with his own style combined with the similar vibe of the megadrive games instead
