I think the real problem was other gameplay types. Sonic Team is already so small and so rushed that building multiple engines lead to no character feeling good to play as.

Yeah I mean I talked about it before with other comments but I think it's more the gameplay change that's the issue. Dividing the development to multiple play-styles really spreads the work thin and makes everything weaker in the process. I love the adventure series but it's honestly less then a third you get the speed stages which are the only ones that I want to be playing to begin with.

@@MattVargas I agree. It was never the characters themselves that were the problem, it was just that their gameplay styles were unfocused & all over the place. It just too bad that Sega or Sonic Team didn’t correctly addressed it and just reduce the characters to glorified cheerleaders whiles the gameplay continues to be inconsistent with 3D Sonic. So not really fixing the problems, but also make the games from 2010s feel more soulless without the cast of characters doing much….. I hope with Frontiers setting up a decent foundation & hopefully playable characters for update 3 being fun that they have a consistent focus with 3D Sonic, but who knows. This franchise is so unpredictable at this point

This 14 year old video is living proof that sonic fans don’t know what whey want. To think this was made back when fans were sick of edgy 2000’s sonic and wanted classic sonic. But now here we are, in the 2020’s, where we have classic sonic games galore like mania and superstars. Now fans are sick of classic and want edgy modern sonic back(frontiers really was trying to bring all that back I could tell). It all feels like poetic irony.

It's the same with practically anything Sonic related. Like how people absolutely hated Jason Griffith voicing Sonic, complaining that he couldn't act and how he sounded terrible as the Blue Blur (along with the rest of the 4Kids cast.) So Sega changes them, then all of a sudden everyone thinks that Jason Griffith was the greatest Sonic voice, had absolutely no flaws, and suddenly hate Roger Craig Smith. Now I'm aware that it's likely not the same people who have suddenly changed their minds. It's more likely that they're kids who grew up with the 4Kids era, were used to hearing those voices, and obviously were too young to know of the amount of hatred Griffith got back in the day. However, it is annoying that people are literally saying the exact same things about Roger that people were saying about Griffith back in the day.

Bare in mind the entire fanbase is not one individual. 14 years ago, classic fans probably hated the “modern” (at the time) era of sonic with the stories and different characters and wanted the classic era to come back. Those fans got their wish and are probably ok with the 2010 era The ones complaining are the ones that DID enjoy the early 3D era of Sonic and liked the stories and characters. Now they have grown and now have a voice to express their opinion.

God, I remember when I used to think it was cool that Sonic was ditching continuity and his friends in the 2010's. When I was 15 or so I rewatching this video a lot, nowdays this is payful to watch ha ha But this is very simbolic of how Sonic was perceived back then. I still think that Sega are suffering because of the annoying backlash that Sonic 4 got. I mean, fan boys were treating Sonic's black eyed design like it was an entirely separate character from "that ugly, stretched out, green eyed imposter", then in the very next game, Sonic Generations, Sega suddenly brought back Sonic's older design as an entirely separate character. That is way too convenient to be a coincidence. And the fact that Sega have been shoehorning Classic Sonic and Classic imagery into every Sonic game for over a decade just tells me that Sega are more interested in appealing these games to whiney, entitled fan brats than more reasonable POSITIVE Sonic fans!

I don't know why I keep responding to all of these but it's mostly about the gameplay change. I love all of Sonic's friends but the adventure series suffers bad from pulling you away for the speed stages for much less fleshed out gameplay types. The Frontiers update looks really cool and I'd honestly be surprised if it had Tails in a mech or Knuckles hunting treasure.
