Maybe the GBA memory RAM changed the overflow limit.

It's most likely 65535 (16-bit integer limit), but the developers never expected you to go past 999 so it only show the 3 last digits.

The 535 Is For 65535. The Lives Counter Is 16-Bit (Binary) Or 4-Bit (Hexadecimal)

1 Does it work on the original version ? 2 What about the 255 live glitch ? I mean that one when sonic is about to drown hanging the column and approaching the spikes causing that overflow.

The wall clip in Act 2 dosen't work in the original, due different engine physics used... The slowdown in the GBA is what caused Sonic to be pushed inside the wall. As for the lives overflow bug, needs some testing...🤔

Also, the Genesis was more reliant on hexadecimal for its programming. The highest number in hex is 255, therefore the highest life count it could jump to was 255

Yes, but on some games, winning is more stronger than the game over and backwards.

They changed it in this port for some reason.

The original game uses a hexadecimal system for things like life count. As far as numeric values, hex can only go to 255. Obviously you could manually increase your lives, but because 255 was the highest hexadecimal number, thats where it goes when it can't handle-1

First of all , I used the glitch found by Werster to skip the entire stage. (I will now add it into the video description.) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6GbmKWGa7GZhNU Then it's very simple , you need to have 1 life left and beat the stage while Sonic is drowning. You will respawn on Labyrinth 3 with 0 life , dying once more will bring the lives counter to 535.
