It all comes down to Script and Voice Direction. It also takes some time to get used to the character you play in. Examples: Ryan Drummond had a rough start since he sounded so bored in Sonic Adventure 1. However, as time went on by the time Sonic Heroes came, he improved MASSIVELY. He becomes synced with the character that he realizes how the character should be done. Jason Griffith had a rough start too. He used to sound so off as he was auto tune as Sonic and Shadow in Sonic X. But by the time Sonic Unleashed came, he became much more aware of what Sonic should be. This might be the same case scenario for Roger. All of us had a bumpy start once :P
