Videos like this really show that the modern Sonic formula has potential. I just wish Sega would commit to making a Sonic game based fully around this kind of arcadey gameplay; do away with the complex stories and overworld fields, and just have a set of ~25-30 stages like this, designed with replayability in mind. Refine the movement engine a little, toughen the scoring and rank criteria so that getting an S is a real challenge, maybe halve the speed at which the boost gauge fills (so that you have to be more careful about when you use it), ditch the 2D sections and complex platforming (Generations was the best in this regard; Colours, Forces, and even Unleashed had too many of these sections which completelt ruined the flow of some levels...*cough*eggmanland*cough*), and keep the automation and scripting to a minimum (although I think it definitely has its place in terms of giving the player a brief breather). They should leave the 2D stuff to the Mania team, and perhaps split off exploration/platforming-heavy 3D gameplay (assuming they ever get it right - Sonic Utopia is a good example of what to aim for, Sonic Boom is an example of what *not* to do) into its own sub-series. I don't see why there shouldn't be shouldn't be room for different games with different gameplay styles. E.g. I like to replay both Sonic Mania and Sonic Rush, but for different reasons; Mania more for finding new routes and secrets, often with the goal of finding better ways of beating each level, and Rush more for perfecting the execution of my playthrough of a given level. What's important is that each game should be focused entirely on it's chosen gameplay style; when a game aims to hit multiple goals simultaneously, you end up with shit like Sonic 4, which pleased neither the fans of Sonic Rush nor the fans of Sonic 1/2/3&K. One big problem IMHO is that platforming in 3D doesn't lend itself to reflex-based gameplay in the way that 2D platforming does. Even in series that don't emphasise speed, this shows; compare the pace of levels in, say, SMB3 or SMW, with those in SM64 or the Mario Galaxies. You *can* do them fast, but in my brief experience of trying the speedrun stars in SM64, it's definitely not as fun, and much more frustrating. Honestly, I got the same sort of fun from doing speed and score runs of the modern stages of Generations as I did from going for perfect runs of levels in Sonic 1, 2 and 3. If that's the feeling they're trying to reproduce, then they should probably try to refine this formula they've already got, rather than trying to somehow do everything at once. What annoys me is that Sega are an arcade developer first and foremost, so I'd expect them to have gotten something like this down by now. /rant

I finished Eggmanland with an A rank and my personal best was 9:39:97, I think I'm among the world records Edit: Updated to 7:59:40, and bro, I have a tip for you in 1:03. Go to that lever, and already triggered, restart the level, and it will crash at the beginning, when Sonic is ready to start, he has already started. I do this on my new personal best and it works!
