In my eyes, Sonic Unleashed was the pinnacle of portraying Sonic's character. Not too serious. Not too light-hearted. Not too smug. Not too soft. All aspects of his demeanor were perfectly balanced to give us the hedgehog with attitude who still puts helping others before all else in his primest form. And this is all flawlessly epitomized with this opening cinematic which manages to use both action and words perfectly to tell you what these 2 characters are all about. This game, probably more than any game in the series since his adventure games, showed you why he's cool with no need to actually tell you he's cool. (Heck as almost to be a self aware joke, the one time he says "Pretty cool, huh?" Chip isn't even paying attention to him. As if to highlight that there's no real need to explain what's cool about yourself. You already make it clear through who you are). It's a shame the game's wild departure from conventions vastly overshadows all the familiar elements in Sonic Unleashed cause they really have Sonic at his best. SEGA nailed his personality perfectly here and it's sad that they've distanced themselves so much from the game, including in personality cause this game could have served as the perfect example of where to guide Sonic's chracter going into a new decade. But instead SEGA took all the wrong lessons from Colours light-hearted approach and have been making Sonic way too tryhard for his own good.

Yep, this intro is pure epicness, no unnecessary dialogue, not trying to be cool, the animation is flawless and it brings life to the characters and their expressions and the right amount of action. If I had to intruduce a friend to the franchise I would bring SU intro to the table, it's just perfect.

this cutscene, in my perspective, haves the vibes of a opening of a animated movie. how it starts, how the middle explains what is happening and how it ends, then, you see the title of what you're seeing. Sonic Unleashed.

The fact that Sonic Unleashed’s intro is straight to the point in getting the characters of the story introduced and having the plot basically told within 6 minutes which helps sets the scene for what the objective is. It’s quick, fast paced action and tension because like you said us as players are seeing it from Sonic’s perspective and the fact there isn’t much dialogue it lets the players enjoy the music and action without the dialogue being constant (something that sonic games after this have constant dialogue) and especially after all that you understand what your mission is.

I never had the chanse to play Sonic Unleashed and the only thing i heard is "Sonic is a werewolf, it's bad" "The story takes it self way too serious" "The gameplay is boring". But i never saw anything so good like this, it's not only a perfect in how you analysis this cutscene and the characters, but i think that, the more i watch and coment on your videos, the more i learn to know how to form my opinion and become a better story teller. Thank you so much dude, but here’s one thing to take away from me: Don’t form your opinions around someone else, forming your own opinions is the best way to not only grow as a writer, but to handle anything the best you can. That’s why i ask for criticism for my videos, not to attack someone, and not to turn my views on something into something that they want, but to see if i can improve on my craft. We shouldn’t turn disagreements, differences, and argument into toxic fights. instead, we need to work together and look for the best way to handle a story.

Being new to the sonic fandom and all, this cutscene shaped my view of him as a character. Whenever I think of his voice, or the way he speaks, my brain immediately goes to "Showing remorse, Eggman? If you played nice, I wouldn't have to break all your toys!" I'm honestly really upset that they decided to change voice actors, because Jason Griffith is just perfect at portraying Sonic in my eyes... or ears, I guess. As for your analysis, I agree with everything you said! I sadly never got the chance to play unleashed, but I watched this cutscene; it blew me away! I'm already a huge fan of visual storytelling, especially animation, so I'm really glad that someone else can appreciate it from that angle. Seeing this cutscene again I can't help but wonder why can't we just get Sonic shows with action like this, rather whatever the hell Boom is supposed to be. It very easily gives the likes of Devil May Cry and run for its money in terms of action. Also an alternative song for that opening: Keel - Speed Demon

I remember finding the PS2 version of Unleashed in a Half-Price Books, I had played Sonic Advance before and the art for Unleashed’s cover made me think “that’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.” Naturally I picked it up and once I booted up the game I was met with this masterpiece of a scene. I was completely sold on everything going on and played the game to death, loving every moment, even a couple lame missions. To me, this was the best game I had ever played, even though I didn’t beat Eggmanland’s time attack for years. I have a few other games now that I admire more, but this beautiful game still belongs in my top 3 ever. This scene alone made me become a Sonic fan for years, and I’m so glad I’m not the only one that recognizes it’s absolute brilliance

In fact, we did it so much to the point that he instantly recognised the opening background music when I randomly played it as an experiment. Unleashed was actually my very first Sonic game when my sister bought it for the wii when I was about 11, and although I've never actually played the hd version the wii version was still an amazing introduction to the series. To this day (8 years later), it's still my favorite Sonic game, and definitely in my top three favorite games in general. Sonic is to this day my longest lasting hyperfixation (aside from maybe cats, since I can't remember when exactly that started), and although the series has definitely had its ups and downs, I've never outright disliked any of the games and/or stories. When done right, Sonic is such an amazing character, and Unleashed absolutely nailed that

Great little analysis!! I truly, utterly love this cinematic for all the reasons you listed - Sonic Unleashed has been my favorite Sonic game since I was little. The animation is still gorgeous even by today's standards and the action is so cool... and of course, Sonic's first Werehog transformation is unforgettable. I can't help but heap praise onto Marza for giving us this and the tie-in short. I also agree about Unleashed's tone and how it portrays Sonic - something I always appreciated about the game was how the stakes were definitely high and things could get pretty bleak, but Sonic and Chip's journey is still a fun one; serious overarching plot, but able to have levity. Same goes for how Sonic's written: he's still cocky and able to goof off a little, but he takes stuff seriously, and his maturity and kindness shows through in how he treats Chip and the people in his world. It's really nice. But yeah, sorry for blabbering on in your comments. Thanks for the video!

I love how Sonic is just having fun while being shot at my hundreds of canons and robots. It really portrays his character perfectly. Running into danger without thinking, and always up for tons of action.

This intro was the first time I ever saw Sonic being animated utilizing the fundemental animation principles such as squash and stretch along with smear frames which that whole principle is just tailor made for Sonic due to his snappy high speed movement in everything he does. I believe this gave the extra oomph the animation needed to stand out more than any other cinematic before and after it.

So.. i just watch an entire marathon of every vídeo in this channel And you are amazing dude, this videos describe perfectly my feelings towards the series I grew up with every Sonic game in the Gamecube, main games and collections I have dreamed about Sonic Adventure 3, an open world game with the Chaotix with a new villain that puts them to the test as detectives A game for only Team Dark I cannot stop thinking about your ideas for a Silver game (Silver and Shadow would make a great teacher and student dynamic) And i'm being dreaming about the main games being remade To connect everything from Sonic 1 to Unleashed Imagine Sonic 1 starting with a prologue about the emeralds being created by the Gaias to keep balance But after the Chaos accident with the Echidna tribe, the Gaias acended Angel Island to the sky, and after the incident with the people of West Side Island, the Gaias just removed the Chaos Emeralds from the dimension, so no one has seen the Emeralds in ages until Sonic brought them back in Sonic 1; with that explanation i would elaborate on... Maybe that's why they made the Chaos Drives in the Ark, there are murals from ancient tribes, so the scientists tried to make them by themselves (an unlimited source of power) And.. the same explanation Could fill the plot hole of "Why Black Doom asked Gerald for the Chaos Emeralds?, Couldn't he just search for himself?" Because even tho he send Troops to search (Glyphic Canyon) the Emeralds just weren't there Heck, what if the purpose of the Black Arms was to harness an endless supply of energy inside the planet which turns out to be Dark and Light Gaia but they don't know (and neither does the cast, that would be for the player to figure it out) I want to see Flashbacks of how was Shadow's life in the Ark And i want scenes that show Gerald's first contact with the Black Arms Picture this: Gerald and his team are exploring inside Angel Island more precisely, Hidden Palace, this was before finding the mural of Super Sonic (maybe the organic Ultimate Lifeform) But after creating the Artificial Chaos in base of the murals for Chaos in the Mystic Jungle and after starting the prototype of the Biolizard since María was already sick and Gerald used Lizard's regenerating cells to probably make a cure Now with all that stated, The Black Comet passes around the earth, it cannot enter the athmosfere due to being very slow, so Black Doom sends the Sky Troops to investigate and the Artificial Chaos the team has as security start to overreact, once Gerald goes to the surface he makes a deal with Black Doom, they give him Black Arms DNA, with that the Ark's crew creates Chaos Drives and updates the GUN robots and Artificial Chaos designs, after getting to know the Emeralds history Black Doom in return asks for them when the comet returns in 50 years (i would like to put Black Doom's thoughts about West Side Island, how he begins to hate earth's people when he discovers that some killed the people of it's own kind for power lust, so BD decides to "save" the planet from themselves by killing them and harnesing the inside energy when he returns entering the Black Comet with Chaos Control) They made Shadow, BD gets a messanger for the future and Gerald finishes the project After the Black Comet leaves, someone finds the abandoned ships in Glyphic Canyon and the ships are creating merciless beasts killing everything, so.... Doubting BD's intentions, Gerald makes the Eclipse Cannon Uffffff. I spend a lot of time writting this In the end, the remakes would: Fix the plot holes - Expand the lore - Connect everything Side note: for a Shadow remake i would make it a single linear story that uses every level, maybe starting at Westopolis, hitting rock bottom in the first third at Gun's Fortress and regaining the earth against the Black Arms Sonic Forces style, ending all at the Comet itself (keeping Shadow as a hero) Dude, your vídeos are awesome and inspire me to think this kind of topics Grettings from México Sorry for my English

Holy shot dude! Some of the things you wrote are uncanny to my “Timeline” script. It’s weird, i’ll make sure to mention you in that video when i get to it so you don’t think that i’m just ripping you off. Gerald basing the biohazard of the chaos mural in the water palace, and then scraping it when it’s not optimal. Then he sees sonic’s mural on angel island, and gathering chaos energy from the master emerald in these things he made called “chaos drives”. After making a deal with black doom for his blood in exchange for the emeralds, he makes the eclipse canon to kill those mfs 50 years later. Now I’m skipping over a TON of stuff right now, the point is that our viewpoints are very similar. The only difference being that I don’t think you took Iizuka’s “two worlds” thing under consideration. (judging by the Gaia and chaos relationship.) And listen, I COMPLETELY understand, i hate the two worlds thing just as much as the next guy, but i prefer to work with what i’m given. Anyway, Thank you so much for the love man, I’m looking forward to hearing more from you!

Sonic Unleashed has the best soundtracks among all Sonic games. Nothing can beat the enjoyment, the atmosphere, and the harmonious music of each hub represents the country. And last but not least, orchestra always give the impression of epicness than any banger electronic musics.

They could have made a movie set in the video game universe, and this would be the PERFECT intro for it. It establishes Sonic and reintroduces to us, shows off his super form in order to make us realize the upcoming threat isn't something that can be handled that easily, and throws Sonic into a whole new dilemma.
