I feel like you'll be disappointed. this is in my opinion one of the coolest sonic youth songs. 3 and a 1/2 minutes into "wildflower soul" is a cool song.

You know what i am still grief stricken that SY split, they are the only band that made me feel like i was assending to heaven, saw them about 5 / 6 times in London, UK, the hair stood up on the back of my neck every time! Look i am 52 and want to start learning guitar but i know i will get bored the usual route, yer know the basic chords for kids songs etc, i need to feel something straight away, i dont want to learn the conventional route, i should of been a punk in 1976, i was 15 ish but was too into my raaaawwk music then! Any suggestions? I love seeing your vids of guitar!

I personally don't mess with very man alternate tunings. Sometimes a drop D, or a D standard tuning. Explain to me why Sonic Youth uses such bizarre tunings. I have been a fan of theirs for a long time, and I understand some basic concepts as to why they do what they do. In the end though, I feel like this song could be played in standard tuning, but the fingerings might be more difficult. Break it down for me like I'm 6 years old. As I said, I don't branch too far from standard tunings, and while I know why some use alternate tunings - I can't always understand why SY goes so far out of the norm aside from experimentation.

+slackerVK help me out here. I don't see why this song couldn't be played in standard tuning.

***** Interesting. I know that a lot of their tunings are done to achieve specific sounds, but I guess I get hung up on the 'why not just play it in standard?' thing.

You should hear the unedited footage, it will be easier for you to notice how it sounds and feels. I think using alternate tunings like that is a really cool way to play music.

You could do a bunch of the same chords in standard but I find alternate tunings can give you a much different timbre and overall feel.

Sonic Youth is very well known for their swirling, chorus-like guitar sounds. Besides the ambitious experimentation, the songs give a very different feel compared to being played in standard. Those sounds could only be achieved through those tunings in order for it to sound like South Youth. At the time, no one used (or thought to use) those kind of tunings. The best example I could give is to play Teenage Riot in both standard and their original tuning.
