Saw Sonic Youth four times on the Washing Machine tour in 1995. Twice at Lollapalooza, and later that year at the Hollywood Palladium and the Wiltern. Got to hear "Diamond Sea" four times. Thank you gods for allowing me to be born at the right time to see this band.

My uncle saw them in '91. It was at 7 on a Saturday night. He left with the feedback of the amps ringing in his ears. Feeling queasy and a limited budget, he quickly checked himself into a nearby Best Western. He woke up with the noise still present. It finally stopped on a Wednesday while at work.

This is in the fine line between music and white noise, and they make it on a very expert way, absolutely mesmerizing. It's a master craft. One can space out just by hearing this. That's what the pinnacle of art looks like.

The songs I love most are all about the lyrics. And yet I have never heard a song as great as this. I have been a Sonik Youth fan for over 20 years and there is something about this song and this performance that makes me as happy as I could imagine being. I saw them perform this live in '96 I think it was as a 19 year old and everything after that has just been falling action........

I still don't know how the fuck did they do that... They must have titanium ears to survive to that noise... the way they experiment with their instruments, it just blew my mind, I don't know what the fuck did Thurston do with his wire... They're fucking unique, they're like Jackson Pollock making music...

I heard them in 1996 in Budapest, Sziget Festival. Got to the stage based on some vague recollection that they might be some American legend. It was mind-blowing, one of the best shows I have ever seen. I was very happy that this fierce love for free noise existed on stage. But when I went through their recordings afterwards, I was quite disappointed. Anyway, thanks for the upload.

Incredible. It's a tough pick, but this is probably my fav song of their's. I'm pissed that Thurston had to go and fuck everything up and now I'll never be able to hear this or anything by them live..
@sonicboy197 жыл бұрын
Well, although it's unlikely they'll ever reform, never say never. I think it would be up to Kim really. I'd completely understand her not wanting to, but time does tend to give people another perspective on things, so you never know. And at the end of the day, they were together and highly prolific MUCH longer than most bands are, and I think they were all ready to do different things even if what happened hadn't went down. It might sound cliched, but everything has a life cycle and nothing lasts forever. I do miss seeing them live and listening to new SY albums, but I'll always be appreciative for the amazing legacy of work they've left with us.
@nikolademitri7317 жыл бұрын
sonicboy19 No doubt their legacy as legends will stand forever, and no doubt they have one of the most consistently fantastic catalogues of any band to ever exist. I just really wish I could have seen them live. Idk enough details to know if they were ready to move on. Sure they had solo material, but it was my understanding that they had another albums worth of material that they intended to record, but tensions were too great after their final tour. It's just that it was such a fucking senseless way for a band to end. It's one thing if a band isn't releasing good material after so many years, or if band members are dying off, but to end over such a selfish act is absurd. Thurston could have made it better after infidelity. That shit happens. He chose some young cunt over his wife and daughter, though. I know it's old news, but I'm still not over it. I'm getting back on a big Sonic Youth kick again, so it's all coming back and annoying me again. They were a bucket list band for me to see live. Oh well. At any rate, there's still the albums, and I'm rediscovering how incredible Washing Machine and A Thousand Leaves are, which are albums I never listened to back when I first got into them. Idk how I slept on those albums bc I've come to realize now that they're not only the better than their other 90s albums (the only other 90s album by them that I actually love and think is a masterpiece is Goo tbh), and not only are they amongst the very best in the bands catalogue, but they're really some of the best experimental guitar music ever produced in my opinion. Definitely they're most psychedelic work, not including the SYR albums. Great channel btw! Cheers!
@sonicboy197 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I hear ya. I was disappointed that it ended the way it did too. But over time I've tried to depersonalize it a bit. Sonic Youth was never defined by Kim & Thurston's relationship, and I think more bands break up as a result of some form of breakdown in relations between its members than for any other reason. From that perspective, this is really no different than the natural course of most bands. Too bad you didn't have the opportunity to catch them live. I was fortunate to see them play 7 times over the years...6 of the 7 were at the same venue but each tour somehow managed to define itself as an entirely unique experience. Glad that at least some of their live moments were captured on video...it doesn't match being at a gig of course, but it's definitely better than nothing! Thanks for the comments and glad you're enjoying the videos!
