recently added this to my mix buss and love what it does. Having said that this tutorial gave me a lot of insight on how to set it up once I'm using it more actively in mastering. Great info. thanks.

Thanks mate! Really appreciate the clear insight on all of your Sonic Academy tuts. When I was just a young Doof pup back in Aus, id drop your jam Circadians in pretty much every set! Although I'm not a psy producer anymore, your sound is still a huge inspiration & influence on my current productions. 🙏

Thanks for the run down on the controls. Been using Waves SSL G Comp on Master Channel, but after watching this feel a bit more confident using it for Master Comp.

I've played with the plugin on Revolver and the sound was stunning, quickly took it into another decade. (Beatles Revolver) It was so dramatic, I have yet to place on individual tracks in my mixes. Good demo, thank you

When you go into dual mono mode you set the attack and radio settings the opposite of the left side, and when noticing the attack is wrong you are not noticing that the ratio is is wrong also, cause its set to 6:1 on the right side while is 2:1 on the left side. Where you aiming for different compression on each side?

12:00 You're absolutely right, cuz he's also a visual artist and prefers symmetry. Its okay, - this plugin was more confusing to me than it should have been. His tutorial is still the best on this cuz he covers the manual, which I'm too lazy to read (for now).

When we use dual mono the compressor will react to the left and right channel separately? if yes, does it mean it may compress the signal more natural? because of giving each channel its own proper gain reduction instead of applying a reduction for both? ( even with same settings set for left and right)

thanks man this was helpful I like this plugin but with no presets I was having trouble figuring out its intricacies for mastering.

It doesn't use an optical detection phase. It models after an a compressor that does that. It doesn't feed into transformers either. It's a computer algorithm. I'm sure you know that but too many people talk about this stuff as if it were a real physical object and it's just not true. Probably because they put the little picture image of the original. Cute. Real cute.

LOve this compressor. Actually like the Class A version slightly better but a really nice sounding cmprsr. It replaced the Capitol Mastering Compressor on a piece I was working on yesterday. The Capitol MC sounds really nice but the Shadow Hills is just a better fit this time around.

Just bought this today, I've also subscribed to sonic academy for a year, I'm currently building my new studio space so I hope to use all the courses to help me improve and enjoy my music tinkering more when I finish my studio space. Although, I must say, Phil, your going to have to compile your "secret stash" of 90's 00's progressive house sounds for Anna 2 that you are hiding that you told me about. How many likes will it require to get u shifted to release it dude?? I'm going to start it of. #philssecretstashneedsreleased

I felt dizzy from how lopsided that sounded - and he says "Something's not right... the VU meter shouldn't move so much on this side", that was funny. I mean, I hope he just said it in a funny way but actually did hear it.

Man, I wished that I could afford the real shadow hills . If the plugin and the hardware sounded identical, then the hardware manufacturer would not allow plugin manufacturers to sell the plugin version.
@Eldorado12392 жыл бұрын
Why not. You can never talk people out of their "I just hear it" religion. It's case by case, sure there are bad plugin versions, but in all practical sense, most of the time the only difference is the $2000 difference in price. Those smaller quantities of HW will always find someone willing to pay for that 0% to 1% improvement. Given the ease of selling them, plugins probably make them more money anyway, after deduction of R&D, workshop and warehouse running costs, everything around supply chain, failed units under guarantee and other things.

This is a weird compressor….not a bad one me but not a great one….i e had it for years now and the easy thing about it is you know when it’s correct but I feel like correct sometimes doesn’t cut it on this compressor
@maxmaxington58733 жыл бұрын
It sounds like shit. The optical compressor should just be kissing the GR, otherwise it sounds all over the place. 2 db is much too much for music that fast and dense. It sounded better without the plugin. I don’t think you really know how to use it. The VCA should shape the sound (and can allow for more GR without totally ruining the general dynamic), the optical is usually for a very gentle compression on the way in to smooth out the signal before it hits the VCA. The needle should barely be moving.

Honestly the visuals are a little confusing to look at so it's easy to miss something especially when doing a quick demonstration. He was just showing us how to use it and how it works, it probably does not reflect how he personally uses this compressor on his projects.

He actually explained it well. You just don’t get it. If you don’t understand, ask questions
