This covers compression on more detail than my music degree ever did! We literally believed that compression is there to make the amplitude more balanced. And occasionally to glue, although saturation tends to be used more for that according to our lecturers. This video is making me feel like I was conned by my uni. I feel betrayed. And I am only 9 minutes in so far!!

Nothing should be paywalled. The things we know now are the product of countless lifetimes passed in research and development, it belongs to all of humanity, some of which are dirt poor but need access to it just as much as you or me. For many lifetimes people reinvented the wheel because do nothing hoards kept all the worlds info under lock and key. To this day places like the Vatican have massive hoards of books, but just as they stole the data they also destroyed that which they disagreed. We have made it this far and yet here we are again. Can’t we solve this once n for all?

Despite the runtime, this was actually very direct and concise. You could probably teach this content for six weeks, but the runtime is good for students who want to focus and learn either quickly or who need to rewatch sections to get it into the brain (and the ears). I honestly didn’t need to watch this at all after 30yrs on the desk, but like a lot of yt instructive material, I had it running in the background over a couple days while I was doing transfers just to understand what and how much of this information and concepts are being presented to new students of the craft. This 10hr and NOTABLY FUCKING FREE (!!!) content is a super accelerator for those unable to do intensive campus courses or work in studios with a good teacher. Kudos to these guys to putting this out, it’s very good.

Super informative series of lessons. Thank you very much! The knee is more accurately described as a non-linear curve segment that is drawn through, and centered, on the threshold. It's completely deterministic and not muddy, cloudy, or random in any way. It behaves the same way every time. It is essentially a Pre-Attack knob that is fully independent from the Attack knob. An analogy that aligns with this would be driving on a road that has a 55 mph speed limit that changes to 35 mph. The knee is how you decide to slow down to make sure you're at 35 mph when you pass that sign. If you wait until the last second and slam on the breaks, that's a hard knee. If you gradually decelerate by applying the breaks a few hundred feet before the 35 mph sign, that's a medium knee. If you just take your foot off the gas and allow drag deceleration to slow you down 500 feet in advance of the 35 mph sign, that's a soft knee. In all cases, the start of the deceleration represents the start of the incremental application of compression. The G-force you feel when slowing down is proportional to how hard the knee is. Now, the only minor complication in the analogy is that you need to think of the threshold setting as being the mid-point on the road between the 55 mph sign and the 35 mph sign, and not the 35 mph sign itself, because the knee is symmetrical about the threshold. The knee starts at a prescribed number of dB below the Threshold setting and ends at the same number of dB above the Threshold setting. The knee is essentially just a smoothing filter on top of the Attack. The Attack by itself with a hard knee produces a straight line (i.e. linear) turn on of the compressor. Making the knee softer allows you to change that linear turn on to an exponential shape that is essentially slower in the beginning of the transition and then faster by the end. The knee only works at all if you have a fast attack setting, otherwise the long attack itself doesn't give the knee anything to work with in the small knee segment about the threshold point.

Finally starting to understand compression! About 4 hours in and some things that really stood out: * Attack is like setting attack on a synth, so rather than delay the compression, it ramps up into the full dose of compression *Release is also like a synth, ramps down after threshold is no longer over the set line (like taking your finger off the key) so not just on, then off at the set time *The ratios being exponential, so 2:1 is already 50 percent reduction is volume over the threshold line, 4:1 is 75 percent so not that much more that 2:1 relatively. And so 10:1 is 90% decrease, while 20:1 is 95% decrease. In your mind, it may seem like, 20 would be twice as strong as 10 is is only 5% stronger! Although once you hit 10 you are pretty much just limiting.

You guys are amazing for giving this course for free . I’ve been making music for 6 years now and I learned compression, at least how to use it, a few years back but this course will allow me to actually really deep dive and learn it on a more in-depth level.

I'm about to finish this course and I wanted to say thank you. I will start the eq course right after that. I still can't believe how all these courses are free.

A thing to understand about 'auto gain', which makes it very useful, is that when you turn it on you manually have to tune your final output gain only once. From that point onward, you can make any change to any of the other settings and auto gain will accurately follow any resulting changes to the output volume. So auto gain does not mean you don't have to set the gain at all, it means you only have to set it once, rather than set it after every single little tweak.

This video literally changed my life and I haven't even finished it yet. I've already learned more than all other videos I've ever watched on compression combined. True masterclass!

This is a man that is for the community 🔥🔥 thank you for making this free and available on KZbin, you are going to help so many artists that can’t afford help

This is amazing. Already pretty familiar with many of the concepts, but having everything contextualized together is so valuable. One thing in particular that fell into place for me was the value on layering diffrent styles with seemingly contrary approaches: ie first leveling the vocal with fast attack, then adding punch with slower attack. Realize Ive been stuck with more of a "one goal per element "-mindset, if that makes sense. Thank you for making this available for free! All the best, Erik

I've only been producing 4 years and I'm so glad I stumbled across this video this early. I'd been throwing compression on drums and various tracks just for the sake of using it, in hopes my mix would improve, but taking the time to watch this through and finally get to grips with the nitty gritty of what compression actually is, and the effects it has, is one of the best decisions I've made on my music journey so far. Thank you so much for this outstanding resource, I can't even begin to imagine the number of hours that went into making this. The effect this course will have on my music going forwards is incredible and if you're reading this comment and debating whether to watch the full thing, I would highly recommend it. This has taught me what years of going through random tutorials on KZbin never managed to.

Waiting for a timestamp god? Work in progress: 0:00 intro 1:30 what's a compressor and goals 13:40 what is dynamic range ... Sorry guys, but the original uploader has uploaded official timestamps and therefore this mission is abandoned.

I'm a sound designer with a professional career over 9 years already. But I'm still learning compression now and then. I still find myself lost and despite I can hear it well - I still struggle with understanding what works best. So I go on the journey of watching some compression content on KZbin. And this compression course is just the best thing I've ever seen on this subject. Author, u r a legend ❤❤❤❤❤❤
