You should spray it with a protectant such as Plasti-Dip to seal it up and get you better weather protection. It will last you a while, but to be extra safe spray it. The great thing about plasti-dip is you can paint it and peel the paint right off if it becomes damaged and spray again. It is essentially a rubber spray, very cool stuff.

It all depends on the vehicle. Some vehicles have absolutely no issues with the antenna being mounted in that way, some may experience reception issues. You just have to try different locations and look for the best one.
@jayrenner2115 жыл бұрын
I am sorry, but satellite radio signals will penetrate plastics so the best place for an antenna is to hide it. In this car, it would under the black plastic shield in front of the wipers and as far forward as possible. It will be invisible and still pick up a signal. On my Tacoma, it was under the bed rail covers. On my Envoy, it will go under the plastic cover over the rear glass tailpiece.

The labor depends on the unit you buy, the car you have, and the shop you take it to get installed. The unit prices are also different.

You will have to pull the dash open to find out. However, because the radio is so low in the dash, it is unlikely the antenna can fit there and get good reception.

Such a helpful video. I knew I wanted to run my wire along the window crevasse like he shows, but the screwdriver I was using was too aggressive. I damaged the outside of the wire and eventually severed the wire by tugging on it too much. I will try the credit card thing when I get my replacement antenna, and hopefully have a better go at it.

Thanks, I teally like that method. I have a Dodge truck 2500 with the XM radio built in to the AM/FM receiver. What I need to know is can I replace the antenna that came with the truck with an aftermarket antenna without any signal degradation? My problem is the mechanical device that secures the antenna to the top of the truck has come apart. Dodge dealer has told me that I can't just replace the antenna. The wiring and the antenna all have to be replaced at the same time because it comes as one piece. If I can replace the antenna with a aftermarket antenna it would be a lot easier. I can just cover up the hole with the new antenna and run the wiring through that hole.

An antenna should be fine to be moved from vehicle to vehicle... but I'd go with an antenna specifically branded by Sirius to pick up their signals. "Aftermarket" antennas may _not_ be correctly configured to pick up the specific Sirius signals.

How do the antenna hold up in a carwash?
@biffnarzilla46496 жыл бұрын
Just a point of correction... silicone is NOT ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE. As a matter of fact, it's a pretty good electrical INSULATOR. Putting "a dab of silicone" under the antenna when affixing it to a metal surface (hood, roof, or trunk lid) will effectively ISOLATE the antenna from the metal surface any negate any realized increase in reception due to a localized surface area increase of the antenna when in contact with metal.. If you want some "extra security" in attaching the antenna, you CAN run a tiny bead of clear silicone around the OUTSIDE EDGE of the antenna down on to the metal surface to help seal the magnetic antenna to the surface. Don't worry... silicone won't damage the clear coat or paint finish to any car.

Could you mount this antenna inside the car under the headliner?
@biffnarzilla46496 жыл бұрын
The antenna "receiver" needs to be "line-of-sight", or in this case "line-of-transmission" to the satellite serving the Sirius system. Attaching the antenna to the underside of the roof under the headliner will block any satellite signals from reaching the antenna. Putting the antenna INSIDE the car - on the dashboard under the windshield or on the back deck under the rear window also degrades the receptivity of the antenna. It's still best mounted on either the hood, roof or trunk lid somewhere.

100% silicon is definitely a great choice not only for adhesion strength and being waterproof but is also able to tolerate up to 400F. Obviously a car roof gets so hot in the summer months it would hold up far better than tape; especially if you live in a warmer climate:) Thanks for the great tips. Just bought a new Alpine that is XM ready so they're offering a deal. I'm leaning toward possibly adding this on, not 100% sure yet.

+Lori A Plus, it's conductive, so it'd help the antenna in using your cars metal to amplify its strength!
@DJizLurch7 жыл бұрын
Where did you or do you buy silicon?
@biffnarzilla46496 жыл бұрын
No it's not Lori. Silicone (silicon is the element) is a pretty effective electrical insulator. Putting some of that _under_ the antenna, while certainly helping to adhere the antenna to the metal surface, would effectively electrically isolate the antenna from the hood, roof or trunk.
