@windy3935Ай бұрын
I feel like I replied to you recently. They're not increasing Sonic's speed again. I mean, they did it in Frontiers but exclusively for the Open Zone. So appreciate it there and be grateful for that. As for those arcadey linear levels, nope. The speed was problematic to game design in multiple aspects, which is why they slowed him down. (There's a reason why speedsters are virtually non-existent main characters in game.) It helps them make the games better and to our preference. What they should do is maybe bring back the drift, and definitely add more slide-underneath obstacles - I dont think there was a single one in Shadow Gens. It's actually mind-blowing how good Shadow Generations was able to be without some of those iconic stage gimmicks.

@@windy3935 When I read this, it sounds more to me like some people had skill issues rather than speed itself being a problem for the games that were running on the former Hedgehog Engine since Unleashed until Generations. Either way, I don't appreciate this new Hedgehog Engine that they implemented since Forces and the different, slower gameplay style that it brings to the franchise; no more drifting, and no more quick jumps to keep your inertia while boosting like you could do with Sonic. Now whenever you jump, even if you're boosting and even if it's for the smallest height, they not only automatically curl into a ball, but they also lose almost all of their built up speed/momentum in a flash, this is freaking awkward for a boost-formula Sonic/Shadow game. Ever since Forces, and even more so in Frontiers (in the Cyberspace levels) and Shadow Generations, I never felt like I was going fast at all, even with the boost, compared to back when I was playing Unleashed or when I played Sonic Generations, both OG and the remaster, where I can feel and enjoy a actual thrill of Sonic speed. Frontiers was nice, and Shadow Generations is great, but no one will make me change my mind about that new slower-paced gameplay that Sega has seemingly decided to turn towards, a very bad decision to me.
@windy3935Ай бұрын
@@megapulsar9244 That will only ever be partly the reason at most. Sonic Unleashed was confirmed to be an extremely expensive game to make. IIRC it was either no.1 or no.2. Sonic's increased speed was factually a contribution to that, forcing the devs to make extremely long levels to accommodate for it. And the longer the level, the more environmental design work developers would have to do. There was absolutely no way they could keep sustaining SU's production values entry after entry. Frontiers isn't a boost game (too many people get this wrong). Not to sound condescending, but they made that pretty clear with their explicit level design and character movement design choices. (Cyber Space also wasn't suppose to be in the game.) It's similarly different in the way Lost World and the Storybook games are to the games before them.
@megapulsar9244Ай бұрын
@@windy3935 Okay I see the point. Also I know Frontiers was radically different in the way you control Sonic, obviously he's not maneuverable in Frontiers the same way he once was in Unleashed/Colors/Generations, but well, perhaps I would've liked the game even better if Cyberspace wasn't in it indeed, or if it was different.

Between hedgehog engine 1 sonic felt faster In hedgehog engine 2 sonic feels a bit slower Maybe could be lack of motion blur effects and speed effects in engine 2 lack of creative camera that follows sonic compared sonic unleashed + generations, where speed, motion blur, camera makes sonic feel like SPEED. Sonic Forces lacked great camera movement with speed. frontiers feels fast and fun but static camera (still great gane) Shadow GENERATIONS good level design but speed feels static or it might be just the camera. Yea, correction has already been done, but the hedgehog engine is a graphics engine. The engine for Unleashed and Gens is on Havok Engine, which is also Sonic 06 uses. The current engine for shadow generations is assumed to be what they used for Lost World, Forces, and Frontiers, which mainly cause physics wise are a bit similar mainly in the Forces and Frontiers and Shadow Gens.

It's good to see other people tackling and talking about the concerning issue of Sonic games being slower ever since they started to stray from the speedy Unleashed boost formula after Generations with Lost World, and then Forces and Frontiers. At least Shadow Generations, even if it is slower, compensates with its other gameplay mechanics and the level design that goes along with them. But Forces and Frontiers didn't have much else to do that (well I guess they kinda did, but what I mean by that is that it wasn't all regrouped in one single style of gameplay played by a single character : Forces had different mechanics/dynamics, but with different characters, and Frontiers may have had a faster-paced gameplay with different mechanics too, but only in the open zones, while Shadow has all of his different mechanics to himself and he evolves with them into one single zone and style of gameplay, aka the linear timed and fast-paced levels à la Unleashed).

@ unleashed sonic is around as fast as gens sonic, but the speed upgrades make him faster and the camera is much more dynamic and fast the camera in gens zooms out more so it’s easier to see as that was a major complaint with unleashed, it’s been zoomed out for forces, frontiers, and shadow gens for a similar reason(as well as motion sickness complaints)

Seeing this and stuff like it, always make me wonder why Sega is afraid to make a a modern Sonic game that matches the feel of speed of Unleashed. The other boost games (not you Forces) are fun, but it just feels like along the way, the devs are a bit too out of touch to know what made the system fun: Going as fast as you can through a living breathing world while narrowly sidestepping, drifting, and sliding under a few obstacles. That's all T^T
@MrTragedious986Ай бұрын
I mean as much as I liked going fast, I feel like I prefer Shadow Generations gameplay since it’s a balanced of Adventure and Unleashed gameplay.
@ar7hur06Ай бұрын
it gets stale rather quickly, that's why. there's only so much you can do to make a level that's built like a qte actually fun, while you can dial down the speed and make a more expansive level that rewards mastery of the moveset rather than quick reactions (actually, more like memorizing the layout) and the players will find new stuff and have fun years and years afterwards because they have that freedom and the skill height with what you can do is just so much higher
@monstru1572Ай бұрын
@edstreme imagine having to make hugely scaled locations that take loads of time to flesh out in level design, aesthetics and the accomodation of high speeds only to have players blast through them in like less than 2 minutes. Yeah, 1 or 2 years of development for only a handful of minutes of gameplay! Shadow Generations has a slower boost to make actual platforming shine WAY MORE than just flying through everything. For stripping down the boost, they innovate reaction based gameplay through aspects like the doom spears and even chaos control, and it ends up doing things so much different than the dumb boost games that Sunset Heights really feels like the only linear level in the lineup, which even then, it's still incredibly fun. All the other levels have so many different things you can do with the powerups given to you as you progress through the game, and I could really care less about unleashed style boosting if I can ride on water, fly in the sky or surf on walls. I don't know why people like you still yearn for this sort of boost brainrot gameplay that straight up becomes mindless button holding and maybe one or two reaction time-based sections that last no more than a couple of seconds. Shadow Generations truly feels like I'm putting thought and skill into where I need to go, what I'm doing in certain sections, and how I can potentially find different routes to optimize my times through the powers given to me.

@monstru1572 Based and redpilled, even reading the description on physics tweaks enabled to "resemble like OG Gens" I couldn't help but audibly let out "why" (no offense OP). @edstreme13Ай бұрын
@@monstru1572 I'm not entirely sure why you're defending and making a case for Shadow Generations, when I quite literally wasn't attacking or degrading it in any way shape or form, but alright? Yes, Shadow Generations works for itself and then some, I don't think anyone's disputing that. Shadow and his new abilites open up new opportunites to really open up some cool, fun, and creative ways make the gameplay feel like an awesome experience that'll make you come back for more long after you're done. The whole point of my comment wasn't too shit on what we have, but question why historically we've deviated all over the place to get to where we are now. This video is showing faster boost, and I felt nostalgic. Nothing deeper than that. But I guess just to be a litte nit-picky, I really don't understand the implication of your first paragraph. We shouldn't expect a certain level of quality because...we move fast through them? Unleashed had all kinds nice visual nuances and depths you can appreciate, all while not being sacrificed when moving at high speeds, with a little extra help from clever uses of camera angles and other little tricks in certain areas. For that game, hat's what the poured their develpment into, and it showed,largely being successful at that. But I don't have nostalgia goggles on, I know it was far from flawless, given limitations and certain direction choice and whatnot, but overall, they fairly accomplished it on the whole. So I dunno, i"m sorry, but it's difficult for me to just...lower my expectations like that and just presume what they can and can't do when they put their minds to it. All I'm saying is that every now and then I just want stages like Adabat or Spagonia to show up now and again. Where boosting throught most of the stage practically nonstop with no hiccups at all is something that you have earn after learning to get through all the hazards as second nature. It's a different kind of fun, and seeing this vid pop up just reignited that itch for more of the same, that's all there ever was too it. Never said its better than Shadow Generations as a whole or anything like that, so if for whatever reason you still feel like you're being attacked for enjoying the base game, I apologize.
