Army Painting: Tyranid Hive Fleet Tiamet - Easy and Fast! [How I Paint Things]

Tiamet has been around since 4th edition, their lore being introduced back in 4th Edition, primarily as the source/origin of the Ymgarl Genestealers, before being expanded in 8th. They're one of the lesser Hive Fleets, so not a whole lot of people are aware of them. I think the picture showing their official scheme, however, is fairly new (8th Edition at the oldest). They're an interesting Hive Fleet since they didn't devour the planets of the Tiamet System (which is how the Imperium came about naming them Hive Fleet Tiamet). Instead, they defend their territory fiercely. On the jungle world of Ziaphoria, a group of Eldar Rangers found a tyranid bio-tower that amplified the effect of the Shadow of the Warp so greatly that their minds were sent into shock. The tower is later found by a Deathwatch Kill Team. The Space Marines were assaulted by psychic energy when they got near it, the pulse covering the entire world itself and killing their librarian. Only the Kill Team's Corvus escaped, the Space Marines on the ground all being killed. Now the Inquisitors of the Ordo Xenos are now looking into trying to figure out just what the tower is and what purpose it can have.

Hive Fleet Spheniscidae, black carapace, cold white flesh, yellow to orange gradient near the neck area (Emperor Penguins as a model). Peculiar quirk of the Hive Fleet is the lack of flying winged organism such as Gargoyles, Harpies or Hive Crones, and as such it has been classified Aptenoid Tyranid. Levitating psychic creepies still common, though. (Xeno)Biology FTW.

@@RotGolem Oh cool, coz penguins can't fly, it makes sense as an inside joke as to why they don't have any winged organisms. All so Spheniscidae sounds more intimidating than Penguin & colour scheme sounds good. I'll check it out

If you want that weird, ethereal glowing effect to them, something like Aethermatic Blue over the white primer might work well. Or try Reikland Fleshshade for a gross meaty look.

I find most people go for something a little too saturated for Tiamet. I think this is exactly the right kind of minty white for them.

So I have a quick question! I have my entire tyranid army primed in wraithbone. Do you think this will work out similarly over that primer?

It'll look a little different, but once you've drybrushed the white over the skin it shouldn't be massively so - best thing to do is to try it on one and see what you think.

Replace the black for the chitin with terradon turquoise contrast and it cuts out two more steps

Honestly, as simple as Nids look I’ve dreaded putting paint on any of mine. Best I’ve got is a black primer job. I just find one scheme I like, then I find another, then another… then another… another And now another…

You shouldn't use a paper towel to remove the excess paint before dry-brushing, you should use a textured palette ideally, or anything where the towel can't break down, and end up on the brush :)

Ordinary kitchen towel should stand up to a little work from a brush; toilet paper will disintegrate, sure, but you ought not to be pushing so hard that you're rubbing paper towel to pieces. I've been using it for many years without tissue issue. 😂

Unfortunately you use the old shades that have been replaced by new les potent shades. So using this recipe for an entire army is pretty much impossible.

The new Coelia Greenshade is marginally different to the one you've seen on screen, and as it stains less it'll actually work better with less drybrushing than I've used here.
