Love it! Almost perfect, just needs the blue stripes on the helmet for perfection.

Looks great! Been enjoying the previous version of the shade mix with agrax earthshade but nice to see other versions. Don't forget the sand troopers got to ride space dinosaurs & probably had an easier time with being posted out in the middle of nowhere. Hard now to not also want minis from Spaceballs to enjoy painting up.

I really like the look of this guy. It matches well with your imperial remnant. The Brainmatter Beige looks great for outdoors stormtrooper armor.

I think that a squad of these minis would be awesome, also if ironically the shore troopers have the right colour for the desert. I used the same trick with diluited sand color for simulate scales on boots and armour.

That sand blasted look is awesome. I did my Stormtroopers desert style as well, works great for the shoretroopers but the snowtroopers look like they'll be sweating

Your shading always comes out so smooth. It's because of you that I tried out the older Marine Juice recipe. And while it did yield better results than standalone agrax earthshade or nuln oil, I still found that I couldn't get that smooth coat that I expected. Granted, I'm just a year into the hobby and I don't have a lot of practice wish washes. That being said, I just placed an order for some dark tone to try out the new recipe.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio

Mostly it's a case of how it's applied; don't just chuck it on heavily and leave it, but move it around and away from areas where it looks like it's pooling heavily or going to end up giving you big blotches.

This looks great, I'm gonna be painting a squad stationed on Sullust (the volcano planet in Battlefront) so instead of the sand deposits would grey work for ash?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
Should do! I'd pick a grey with a tiny bit of brown in it, or add just the littlest dot myself for a bit of interest beyond totally plain grey - sure, ash in reality is pretty dull, but we're fudging reality every time we paint these things anyway. 😜
@Silver-Tower
@Silver-Tower Жыл бұрын
Question about the thinned brown sand, doesn't thinning with water that much break down the paint and leave nasty looking marks when it dries ?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
To some degree, yes, but that's part of what you're looking for anyway. It's why dabbing at the mess with your thumb or finger while it's wet helps to smudge that around and make use of that marking effect.

Any advice to make the juice without dark tone? I can't seem to find some in my area. Maybe some basilicanum grey contrast instead of it? Cheers!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
Dark Tone's already the compromise, really. Swapping it out for something else again would be up to you finding something that works, I'm afraid. Depending on where you are, it's easy enough to grab through online retailers or even Amazon.
@nuz4209

If, hypothetically. I had panic bought like 15 pots of the old nuln oil do you thinking using that, medium and new recipe fleshshade would be the same as the old style? You mention that the nuln oil is the key instead of the fleshshade ?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
It should be fine, I'm sure - the old Nuln really was the key to the juice, and the new Reikland is so close it's basically identical to its original formula. Not sure why they didn't rename them when some of the shades don't act the same, but ohhhh well. 😜

If I wanted a slightly cleaner armor how would you change the marine juice so as not to muddy the armor as much?

I wouldn't. 😅 I'd use something like Apothecary White or Soulblight Grey instead.

If one wanted to stick to army painter, would the quickshade medium and soft or flesh washes work as well?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
The main difference between Lahmian Medium and Quickshade Medium is in the flow. Quickshades are pretty gloopy by comparison; not in a bad way but they simply don't flow in quite the same way as the Citadel Shades do. The colours should match well enough, but I'd add just a drop or two of water to break the surface tension in the medium and get the lot to move around a bit easier.

Brainmatter Beige is a really interesting one. Just a hair lighter than Wraithbone, but still more 'bone' than Ivory. Now you can have a dozen very fractionally different whites to go with all those fractionally different greens and browns!

How do you feel about brush-on varnish in general? I haven't used it, I mainly get the Krylon spray.
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
I tend to prefer it over spray varnish if I'm counting on a matt finish. For semi-matt or gloss I'll usually go for a spray, but if I really want to make sure it's smooth and matt and isn't going to frost - it gets pretty humid here - I'll brush it on.

Great video! Inspired to pick up some storm troopers next. I had a question. Can you speak to the choice behind priming in an all over light color vs doing a zenithall like you do with some other white armors that you’ve done?
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the answer is really just, "It looks different." For some armours I want a grimier finish, something that looks dark and gritty in the recesses, where this should be pristine white armour which has undergone rough treatment over months but is still *technically* white.

Army Painter or the Vallejo Game Color range are good places to look, as well as the Vallejo Model Color for more 'realistic' colours if that's what you're working on.

The Elegoo Mars line are a pretty good bet. You can find Mars 2 Pros or Mars 3s at decent prices these days, though bear in mind you'll also want things like resin, gloves, and something to act as a drip tray. Extras aren't expensive, but worth factoring into your pricing.

LOL Sounds like we were lads around roughly the same time, and I was equally fascinated with Sand Troopers (and my 7 year old self was annoyed Kenner didn't make an action figure for them back in the day!) Is it equal parts of each ingredient? Because I've definitely never heard of it going pink. If that's using the new Nuln Oil, try adding a few drops of Dark Tone to it to bring the colour down a little further, and apply it on some primed spare parts.
