I still love my se02. The waveform and range knobs wiggle a little, but that’s because they go down to the lower board for technical reasons, they never felt unstable. I saw some guy showing stepping in some demo, looking closely, he had snap on in his daw, recording stepped automation, embarrassing, turn snap off please. You have to se it for what it is, they crammed in a minimog like, fully analog synth in a pocket format, that sounds really good, with patch memory and full cc control, wich is crazy achievement. They make a lot of fantastic euro rack modules, so they know what they are doing. They added pwm in a later update after this review, and some other features. I add an overdrive pedal sometimes for added warmth. If you don’t like the format, buy a mini Moog or a behringer, if you’re a keyboardist you won’t like this, the knobs are far too small, for my mini studio it’s perfect with the patch memory and cc, try to find that on a minimoog for this price, or at all. Just my 2 cents. Br bobb

Yes! Yes! Thank you Roland! It was the beautiful style I was looking for, without cables in the way. Thank you Nick and Sonicstate, you pointed out so much so efficiently. My opinion: this is the beginning of a new revolutionary era, where we start improving upon what we understandably back-lashed against and killed in the 80's.

Thanks for the review, Nick! (Been waiting for this one.) You mention that the waveforms are good shapes, but they triangle and saw both look more than a bit sloped compared to some other demo's you've done. Obviously if you like the sound who cares, but as I'm learning about waveforms this has me curious. Is that not a bit odd? Should they not be straighter than they seem on the video?

It’s fun creating a rhythmic sequence with dynamic parameter changes, then change patches to something related but a little different for sonic variation within a steady pattern. It sounds very futuristic! I like to create interesting cross mod FM or filter mod and adjust the fine tune of the modulator and change the decay and sustain values while bringing up a delay for a few notes to add rhythmic variety, programmed into the sequence for quasi hi hat and shaker noise patterns. It’s got some unique capabilities!

Nick, the sequencer transpose with key trigger only works with the Roland K-25m keyboard. You can set it up in the Sequencer mode menu, but it won't work (yet?) with other external keys. So you didn't miss it, it's just limited to the K-25.

There's a official sound editor coming out for this synth (Fall 2017) from Roland, so wobbly knobs small knobs i don't care, studio electronics really knocked it out the park, especially for this price range, 500$ for a 3 osc synth that sounds beautiful to dirty asf, I imagine I might enjoy this more than my pulse 2 which is priced 250$ higher and is also a 3x0sc synth and the filter on the se02 kicks the pulse 2's ass.
@HotStrange
@HotStrange 5 жыл бұрын
I’m trying to decide between this and a Pulse 2. Any thoughts from your experience? I owned an SE-02 for a while and sold it, now I miss it everyday. Can’t decide if I’d be better off with the Pulse 2 because of the amount of features it has. I do think the SE-02 sounds a little better.
@tensionvex3140

Come on Nick. A guy that loves PWM as much as you should know how to do it on that synth. Set Oscillator 1 or 2 to Saw, and Oscillator 3 to Ramp (you called it "inverse saw"), and dial the amount of PWM with by detuning of the Ramp oscillator. Saw + Ramp = Pulse wave, then detuning gets you the modulation, more detune, faster modulation.
@jensmandreasen2230
@jensmandreasen2230 7 жыл бұрын
Saw + ramp = PW, yes, but only as long as the oscillators stay in sync and you only modulate the phase - when they are detuned, they'll eventually and inevitably drift to the point of cancellation, which PWM wouldn't (unless you turn the knob "to eleven")
@sonicstate
@sonicstate 7 жыл бұрын
Sort of , but only limited and fixed depth, I did try it (after reading your comment) and it sounded OK but not quite the real deal.
@tensionvex3140
@tensionvex3140 7 жыл бұрын
You're right. It's definitely not as controllable as it would be if it had a dedicated function for it, but it is real though-zero PWM, which is uncommon, and you still have another oscillator to stack with it. It sounds great with a pulse or saw wave paired with it, and it gives you sounds you wouldn't otherwise have. It's a work around for any synth with a Saw and a Ramp and no dedicated PWM control, so it also works on a Minimoog, and its clones.

The "knob wobble" on the SE-02 is no worse than the "slider wobble" on every Deepmind 12. There were people who got the DM12 and the first thing they had to do was open it up to connect the keyboard ribbon to the main board. That guy is 0 for 2 on the new DM12D. "Behringer quality is going up" is something yet to be seen, IMO. That particular tree is full of cherries to pick.

It's no wonder people think analog is "better" than VA, because all these OSC waveforms are nowhere near the mathematical exact ones. You get tons of additional overtones with "square waves" like those square/saw wave hybrids this machine generates! I would have to use a waveshaper to get those waves with a VA modeling synth!

Strictly speaking about oscillators when comparing analog vs digital by such people usually shows a large degree of ignorance as to how signal path functions. The way the cumulative envelopes, filters, VCAs, etc. (even mixers) all function and sound varies widely in the analog domain and is not necessarily easily reproduced in the digital domain. Likewise, you will never get the sound of high quality transformer tubes via analog compressors etc. through any plugin, no matter the processing power.
@nitendoraku3631
@nitendoraku3631 7 жыл бұрын
LOL. The reason the waveforms look like that, is because there is a high-pass filter either in the synth itself or somewhere between the synth and the oscilloscope. It's most likely in the synth to correct for DC offset, which will help minimise unwanted clipping of the signal. The "LOL" isn't because you're not aware of this though, it's just that analog isn't better, just different, and in any case, we're at the point now where good VA should be practically indistinguishable from real analog. That doesn't mean this is always the case. It doesn't help though that people like to compare apples to oranges. Someone will pick some random softsynth, and go out of their way to tell the world how its sound is thin and crap, and junk compared to their Minimoog, and declare digital/virtual analog/VSTs are a waste of time. Every synth is different though, a Korg Minilogue doesn't sound like a Minimoog, nor does it sound like an Oberheim OB-X. Even with VSTs, something like Massive doesn't sound like Repro-1.

Like other people said: unfortunately the video's got some pretty serious interlacing issues. Because of this, we can't see the letters on the synth which is a pity because then we don't know what's being done... Maybe the vid can be rendered again or maybe some settings on the camera were wrong?

hmm, thats very odd, It didnt disply those issues on the check we did here. Sorry about that

Luckily your excellent review is only really affected by this in the beginning of the vid, when you turn the knobs. Thanks for all the great reviews and previews! :-)

Looks like the knobs have an LFO assigned to them. Maybe that's why it sounds so good. I want one.

Shame the pot values don't 'latch'. Hope that can be patched. On the plus side, very nice oscillators and filter, and I just saw a dolphin in Nick's shirt.

The small size of this synth is of some concern. Small Pots. SE has a thing for small stuff. I'm not much of a fan of 2 Osc sythns, but this synth sounds good, it has PATCH memory. Currently 399 at Sweetwater. I suppose a musician can work with this in their home studio, save patches, then take it out to a gig and play it through a controller or other synth. This is worth serious consideration for an inexpensive sound source to add onto another KB that can use some help.

can you do the PWM trick where you usc osc sync to have a square wave OSC 2 modulate a Pulse wave of OSC 1 or do you encounter the same problem?

Does anyone know if the USB connection can be used to send MIDI and audio to and from a DAW (Cubase)? Specifically can it be done without using it as your audio interface, just using with your existing interface?
@st0rmchild

If you’re using a Mac, create an aggregate audio device that includes both your audio interface and the SE-02. I have five boutiques and a System-8 all connected at the same time as my actual audio interface. I’m sure there’s some way to do the same thing in Windows.

Studio Electronics SE02, is perhaps the most underestimated synth available (Rolands hideous 'Boutique' format aside). A more usable, larger format desktop module would be most welcomed.

If I didn't have an M32 it probably eat this up. The pre filter drive does help with the filter dropoff somewhat, something that you can't really do on the m32

Catch up mode on knobs is not usually available on analog. To do so you would have to put a digital interface between the knob and the circuit. Several things that you mentioned in the review as lacking would be easy to do on. digital VA but difficult or expensive on an analog such as this.

Can it output the audio over USB like the other Boutique synths? If so, how good do the converters sound? Also, if it can output audio over USB, does it work with the Roland MX-1 yet?
