Late reply but it's because the writers were different. Ian Flynn was the main writer for IDW's Sonic comic and was later moved to the main Series, where he wrote the plot for Sonic Frontiers. The writers for Sonic Forces were different and Ian Flynn wasn't involved with the game's development.

Problem with the metal virus is what you need to check EVERY inch of potential infected cuz even smallest exposure to the virus (one infected drop is enough) will cause it's spreading (duration of which depends on many factors, the main one of which is the transmitted strain of the virus) on whole body

Do you mean going further back in time and stopping Eggman from creating the metal virus at all? I don’t think that’s possible. Plus Silver had already warned Sonic about the future being cold and metallic, but they didn’t know what the source was brushed it off. Now all Silver can do is work alongside and just help evacuate the cities to avoid the situation from getting too dire. Plus, spoilers for all or nothing if you haven’t read it- Silver helps the gang find the chaos emeralds and he and sonic both turn super and turn the world and the future peaceful again. So he overall plays a major role in the end.
