Cole, you have mentioned that we might be getting tired of watching "the same thing over and over ". Personally I enjoy farmers getting it done. Grew up on the farm with mom's parents and dad's parents. This is farming period. Your not trying to make it anything more, real reality and this the only channel I pay extra for. Please continue what you and Brian are doing. Btw, I'd love to see more Jeff and Tiffany. Thanks Cole

Well that’s a memory I had forgotten. Chased a leak for two days, had all kinds of advice from neighbors (even had one out witching with a metal rod). In the end hired someone to find it! Wasn’t even close, about a half mile off including tracing it under the county rd. Fun times! Always love and appreciate your video adventures.

We pay for our water usually $130 a month. The leak was so bad the meter reader came to the house to tell us the meter was spinning like a top. There’s a local leak detector company that said they would come out in 3 weeks or so. I knew someone in the water dept in our city so I called in a favor and asked him to come over. He came and found the leak in about 5 minutes. Plumber came back and fixed it. Whew. The bill for that month was $700. But the water dept will forgive you most of it if you show you had it fixed

Take a couple of Cooper wires or willow sticks about two feet long the Cooper wire make a 90 degree bend in one end of both hold them in your hands so they will pivot about 6 inches apart with them sticking straight out in front of you to test walk across water line when you get over the line sticks will show direction of the line u can also find under ground water with this method

Depends on ground type and depth of hole. Our hard clay will hold an excavator driving over right next to the edge of a 6ft trench. Our old sandy loam wouldn’t hold a person walking next to a 4ft trench. This ground looks like our pure clay.

When it starts leaking and it's old, the best and fastest thing is to replace it all . My old house water line started leaking i found the leak and cut the pipe and fixed it Two years later I replace all but 4 feet, two years later I had to pay guy to replace those last 4 feet. It's cheaper to do the whole thing. I had to rent a digger like his twice

Now you found the line, you just have to follow it. And make sure you mark it on your Farm Map, or how ever you keep track of lines. Making sure to record it now will save yourself a lot of trouble years from now when it bursts again.

From someone that used to install and repair water wells. When clamping the joits use 2 clamps. Flip the second one over so it pulls/tights up in the other direction. Clamps are cheap. No easy way to find a leak especially when the ground is saturated that much.

I had a leak in a waterline that served residential house and only knew I had a leak because of the high water bill. Nothing ever came of the surface so I called a company called USA leak locators and the guy came out, hooked up a CO2 bottle to the hydrant And had a listening device and was able to pinpoint where the leak was because of the hissing noise that the CO2 made coming from the leak and he was right on. It was 4’ deep.

Seems like boaters have an idea that might be beneficial here. They use two clamps on each side of a fluid connection to provide the necessary safety factor needed in a boat's hull. Considering how difficult it is to gain access to your subsurface connections, maybe double clamps are in order. Your call.

Thanks for another great video Cole and Brian. It was most interesting and enjoyable for sure. Wow. Water line leaks. Really hard to find the exact location of the leak sometimes!!!!! Especially when you don’t know exactly how the later line was put in many years ago. Just a thought. How about just putting in a whole new line from end to end and disconnecting the old line. Just a thought is all. Plumbing is not easy work that is for sure. Old lines are super hard to deal with. Let us know how you come out on this project please. Good to see Sonny dog. He is sure growing. Cute young man. Like your mini digger. Handy machine. About it I guess. Thanks for everything Cole and Brian. You both take care and be safe. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.

Maybe you could bring your excavator skills to repair the water main break in Calgary, Alberta. It appears that we will not have repairs done for three to five weeks. They are working around the clock. The water main has been examined with a robot. They have found more areas that are weak. The city has major announcements made daily by the mayor and professional water works people. Of course the excavators used by the city are much larger but they are using similar skills. Your KZbin video is timely. By the way, people are being asked to cut their water usage and the amount of time they shower down to three minutes. . . . what a mess.

Cole, I have a way for you to locate the water lines. When I was a teenager in the 70's, we had to drill a new well on the farm. My parents knew a "well witcher" and had him come over and find a good spot for the new well. He was right on the money. We needed to find a water line that ran between the house and the barn. This guys taught me how to "witch" moving water. It's actually pretty simple: take 2 pieces of wire about 2 feet long. make a 90 degree bend about 6" up the wires. So you'll have an "L". (i just use a wire clothes hanger and straighten it. #9 wire works too). grab one wire in each fist, thumbs up, shoulder width apart. HOLD THE WIRES LOOSELY, parallel to each other about chest high with long end of wires pointing away from you. Turn on the water, water must be flowing! walk very slow where you think the lines would be. when you get to the water line the wires will cross if you aren't holding them to tight. I know there's going to be snide comments on this post, but I've used it many times over the last 50 years. You repeat the process and are able to mark out the line between spots so when you excavate you'll already know where to dig and in what direction so you don't cut the line like you did. Drop me a message if you have a question. This works with Tile if there's enough water running through it. It's fun to mess with non believers too!

I feel for you guys! I retired from an older plant two years ago and we had issues all the time with old unknown water and drain lines. We ended up having to call in expensive companies that could find those hydraulic water issues. Hope you guys can think outside of box and guess the right spot to end the water feed issue at the start since it isn't needed any more. easier said than done though! Some where is the start to the hog farm feed line and that's the place, Brian needs to hear the right tunes to remember, I would be the same way so it's not a bust on him, I'm serious! Just thinking about it made me remember exactly where I hand dug the new waterline to the house. Maybe Jeff remembers the layout if he dug it or saw it done? I still remember the water line layout on a neighbors property from the late 70's to an outbuilding. It's worth a try, sometimes when you sleep on something it comes to you.

Cole I think regardless of where you live we all have had that problem i dug a 6 foot deep hole around the whole corner of my house only to find the water main hidden below the drain where I started digging, thankfully it was many years ago and I was much fitter and able to. The bad thing was the pipe was about 150 year old lead pipe. I also watched a Scottish farmer doing the exact same thing as yourself digging a hole in his garden to find where the main went to a drinker in his field by the time he finished the biggest part of his garden was destroyed. I sympathise with anyone trying to find leaks .

Some advice based on experience: If you run poly between two buildings, run it inside 4” non-perforated drain tile so you can pull it out and replace it if it ever leaks. Where you see the water bubbling up, isn’t necessarily where the leak is - it’s just the loosest soil and the water can force it’s way through it. I’ve seen the actual leak site be 50 feet or more from where the water appears. Before you start digging, rent or borrow a pipe locator, or ultrasonic leak detector, boost the pressure in the line as high as you can and try to pinpoint the leaking spot. If the line is old and the length isn’t too long it’s faster to just dig the trench and put in a new line, instead of chasing a leak. Say a prayer before you start😜 Enjoy your vids - Good Luck

A few videos back - want to thank Cole for the good things that milkweed does for butterflies. Never knew and always was annoyed when saw milkweed in my way back farm girl time.

Cole, ease be more safe , those trenchs and large hole you have going could cave in while you are in there seaching. Like others bave suggested, go to head of feed line and put in new 2 inch line all way to end. Pht it on farm water map for future .

Quite the "farmer fix" there hahaha. I am glad the trench walls held out. With wet soil like that you had some fortune.

Chasing water leaks is a pain in you know what. Sometimes, it's easier to run a new line, but we won't know that till the end. Good luck, guys

Chasing water line leaks and tracing electrical shorts have got to be in top five of head scratching jobs to do. Having lines 6’ deep makes it even more pleasant I’m sure. Here, lines are 2’ and it still sucks.

Just for information, every time you open the bucket and it bangs open the pin that holds the bucket on is getting mushrooms over time. Pretty expensive fix for it to.

I would make a map of the water lines for future reference. It would make these types of jobs a lot easier.

I wish people would use tracer wire when installing water lines. It makes it easier to find them. I just replaced 1200 ft of line and put tracer wire in with the new line. I also suggest you don't use plastic barb fittings. They are the cause of most leaks at joints. The plastic barb eventually shrinks because of the constant pressure from the hose clamp and the joint loosens. I use stainless steel barb fittings for all mine.

We looked for a leak for two weeks on a1/4 mile line. Found it where an old line had been attached to an old bath tub waterer that we didn't know about. Covered with trees etc. Nearly owed the man the farm by the end of it.
