I was in the Army with Sonny and we sang in Germany in 1962 at the EM Club in Wildflecken.

Robert Sprott that is funny because I was stationed at Bad Kissingen in 1970-71 and was warned "you don't want to be in Wildflecken" and then in the mid 80's I worked with Charles in LA (not in show biz) when he almost left the biz for good. One of the nicest, humblest , most down to earth people I have ever known and he had a huge hit (Black Pearl) which was a big hit when I was in Bad Kissingen. He told me some great stories about Muhammed Ali and Little Richard and even a secret about Black Pearl and Phil Spector which I won't reveal. We never discussed our Army experiences so I never knew he was at the dreaded Wildflecken . Small world! I am VERY happy to see he is still performing and doing well and is healthy!

On this day in 1983 {March 12th} Sonny Charles performed "Put It In A Magazine" on the ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... Seven weeks earlier it had peaked at #40 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Top 100 chart and it spent fourteen weeks on the Top 100... And on January 9th, 1983 it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart, for the three weeks it was a #2, the #1 record for those three weeks was "The Girl Is Mine" by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney... As a member of the Checkmates, LTD he charted three times on the Top 100, "Love Is All I Have To Give" {#65 in 1969}, "Black Pearl" {#13 in 1969}, and "Proud Mary" {#69 in 1969}... Sonny Charles, born Charles Hemphill, will celebrate his 79th birthday this coming September 4th, 2019...

Pressing fault I believe, never come across a copy without the fault. Even holding the stylus head didn't help! The single is ok and there was a very rare 12". A shame this has never come out on CD bearing in mind some of the **** that has!

Today SiriusXM played the top 40 songs from the week of January 22, 1983. This song kicked off the countdown. The WHOLE countdown was flawless. I was a freshman in high school in 1983. This song and its contemporaries was a beautiful trip to a simpler, more wonderful time.
