I have great memories of watching Sonny and Cher with my entire family. I was 9 in 1972.

To all the haters…I can only assume you’re too young to have lived through the 1970’s. It was a totally different time, in every way. Families ate dinner together & watched TV together. You didn’t have instant access to all things that were trendy or what celebrities were doing. You found out by watching TV or reading the newspaper, which EVERYONE did. You’d see someone singing a song on TV and you’d go buy it. You’d find out what all the new stars looked like & sounded like from TV. Virtually everyone either starred or guest starred on TV shows. And variety shows were huge. Millions of women watched Sonny & Cher just to see what she would wear each week. It was exciting to see what people were wearing, doing & saying. You had 3 or so channels to choose from & there was the “movie of the week.” And yes, it was actually exciting because during the day people went to work and children played outside until dinner time. You saw your friends. You didn’t text them. Nighttime was family time. And the next day everyone talked about who they watched or what they saw. Believe it or not it kept everyone in the loop. We all went to the movies, the burger place, the skating rink or the mall & spent our money on the latest records, toys, posters or fast food that was popular. And you found out about it from TV commercials. There were no commercials about drugs like today. They were almost all about cars, food, toys & cleaning products. Case in point: Farrah Fawcett was unknown until Charlie’s Angels debuted in 1976. Suddenly in stores there were pillows, books, notebooks, stickers, trading cards, hair products & of course, her infamous poster! Overnight she became the most recognized woman on the planet from a silly TV show. And with only 3 networks there was something for everyone. And you couldn’t wait to see what was on the following week. Life was simple & I suppose dull compared to now. If you watch shows from the 1950s today everything seemed glamorous & everyone was happy. It was postwar & it was & they were. After working on my computer & checking my emails & my text messages I grab something to eat & if I I’m lucky, see my kids for a few minutes. I have a nice home, a new car & all the conveniences I could want. And I can stream whatever I want to watch. And most nights I think to myself, “it sure was nice back in the seventies.”
@AngelCatBabyАй бұрын
How I can agree with you on this…thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences with us….it was like that in the 1950s as well, and children weren’t allowed vulgar language in the homes, plus they were responsible for getting their school work done, and didn’t have the luxury of calculators or computers, and calling friends was calling on a landline that may have had others sharing the same line, operators were directing calls to whomever you wanted to talk with….businesses actually performed business objectives in a closed room conference table. Nowadays you don’t have to be present there in person, just send in an AI intelligence interface and hope you will be heard and make a difference in the business….will it be you or a facsimile of you that they recognize and that’s there instead? Give me the good old days when contacting someone in person was important, and not just a facet of your imagination where you can change your age and looks by the flick of a switch or the touch of a keyboard/button. Humanity is becoming slaves to machines and losing itself in CGI and AI intelligence interfaces and internet falsehoods of cyberspace where anything which is there can go POOOOFFFFFFffff in an instant, lost forever into unseen space. This is NOT humanity’s greatest achievement…..ITS GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE INDOOR PLUMBING and ELECTRICITY, INCLUDING MEDICINAL HEALTHCARE….ALL OTHERS ARE FOOLISH VANITY AND EGOTISTICAL SELFISH ENDEAVORS AND VALUES.

My thoughts exactly. TV watching was a shared experience. We'd be watching a show and we knew that all of our friends were watching it at the same time. The next day at school, we'd all be talking about it. I was born in 1963. A great time to be a child!
@DStuart-s1qАй бұрын
Sorry, but you're talking about a tiny, tiny sliver of middle-class society. We didn't have a TV for years, my dad beat us kids and we were expected to get a job at 13. You lived in a fantasy world. Not my world.

The seventies were a pretty horrible time actually when you think about it, sure nostalgia can happen and we like to miss the old times because life seemed simpler but keep in mind, many women were heavily sexualized, abused and raped by men in those times, women were nothing but objects of desire and lust, men treated them like animals piece of meat, there was no equality, a lot of racism although better than the 50s there was still a lot of discrimination, you had to be extremely skinny where you had to starve yourself otherwise you would be called fat even if you were at a normal weight, life was depressing and people didn’t talk or were aware of mental illnesses, lots and lots of crimes, crazy drugs and psychedelics and it was normalized to take them, lots of political issues and protests and a lot of poverty. Times back than were not as amazing as you actually think they were, maybe if you were rich or didn’t have to worry about money it was alright but it was a very hard time for a lot of people, lots of people struggled mentally and financially and there was crazy poverty in many places, parents abused their children some even married them off. Life was dull, depressing and people didn‘t have morals by any means. I watch 70s movies or shows and people were animals back then sleeping with literally everyone, nobody was loyal to their partners and people just had sex as if there was no tomorrow no wonder many people developed STD and other diseases and illnesses, people had weird ways of thinking and if you were not married by a certain age they considered you leftover. It was awful times, if anything nowadays everything is much better, more tolerance, understanding and people want to make everything better for everyone and mental health awareness and trying to have equality. The 70s might have been amazing in music but that was quite literally it, I could never imagine living in such a psychotic crazy time. Life is much more handy and easier in many ways, yes it‘s more expensive but we have opportunities that nobody ever in human history had, that‘s pretty amazing.
