It eventually cost him his life....Red and Sonny cared and were courageous enough to try to get through to him but he was too far gone...they sacrificed their relationships with Elvis in the process.... Sonny West got lucky in 1970 when he married. He also wrote a good book in 2008... but he does try and push the bull-crap that he wrote the 1977 book to change Elvis drug addiction. He wrote it for money and when Elvis tried to get them to stop they ignored it. The result was to cause more suffering for Elvis and a few bucks for the trio.

People can criticize Sonny, Red and others about cashing in on Elvis after his death but what you have realize, many of them knew Elvis from his High School days and remained with him as confidants until almost the very end. Elvis was all they knew, he was their teacher, their mentor, their boss. They all had drug habits and lived the lavish lifestyle alongside the man they were paid to protect. They wrote the infamous book on Elvis after they were fired in the summer of 1976. Some call them traitors/judases for betraying Elvis. In retrospect, Would the outcome have been different if this book wasn't released? It's hard to say. At the end of the day, only Elvis knew what he was thinking on the morning of August 16th, 1977. Even his closest of friends/aides/confidants could only speculate. Sonny, Red, Marty, Lamar were with Elvis since the 1950's, long before Priscilla came on to the scene. They knew the true Elvis. Sonny is only sharing his memories and the fans, like myself are grateful to listen and appreciate. Met several of them at Graceland years ago. Nice, humble down to earth people.

Steve G. Well said my friend. I believed for s long, long time now that Elvis did NOT have the heart to tell Red, Sonny and Dave they were no longer needed. Instead, he had Vernon tell them. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, Elvis was in fact trying to get his life together towards the "end". Red, Sonny and Dave were " in the way" of achieving that as were a lot of other "close" people that surrounded him. Things are not always as they appear. It is understandable why these three would write a book that "betrayed" Elvis. Even Elvis understood how they felt as it is evident in the recording that Red West took of his and Elvis' last conversation. If folks were LISTENING to what Elvis was saying they would realise Elvis was still there for them (Red, Sonny and Dave) in spite of the book being published. One of Elvis' last statements was 'this is going to blow this whole thing sideways'. If anyone has any doubts of Elvis' frame of mind during this time period all one has to do is ask those close to him what was the last things Elvis said to them. As much as some people despise these three, its a shame they have such hatred for them. If Elvis can forgive them, then why can't the fans? The fans are only cheating themselves out of some great memories of Elvis by distancing themselves from Elvis' bodyguards memories of Elvis. No one is perfect, not even Elvis. It is no ones place to hate and condemn ANYONE. We ALL fall short. These folks are far worse than these three for judging and hating these three for something that even these three didn't understand then or even now to this day. Maybe someday these folks will see the light..........

Sonny West is the guy who together with Red West and Dave Hebler wrote the book " Elvis What happened?" that broke Elvis' heart when he was near to die. Perhaps once they were friends, but when they were fired by Vernon ( yes, in a way not correct) betrayed the man who had loved them who had given them everything, gifts, money, cars, houses a thriiling life etc. and now they have still the courage to speak and make money on him. There is something about Sonny that you love to hear his stories, I remember having harsh feelings about his book with Red and Dave Hebler years ago but time and understanding has me to say well it does not matter anymore but some of these guys were better than others and even though I may not still agree with what his opinion was I did grow to enjoy hearing his stories.

Sonny and Red were genuine guys who truly cared for Elvis. Sadly Elvis didn’t take care of himself. He relied on prescriptions way too much and that was his final demise. You can tell his health was failing slowly right after the Aloha special. But to blame his death on these guys is just wrong. Elvis was a grown man with a young child to think about. But he thought about his fans too much. He should’ve taken a year off and got help. The fans would have been supportive and loved him just the same.

I met Sonny West at a convenience store in Hendersonville Tennessee is I was driving through seeing my cousin it was in 2003 I said to him at the counter I was getting a bottle of Mountain Dew and a pack of cigarettes and he was standing in front of me at the store I said to him is anybody ever tell you you look like Sonny West Elvis is old bodyguard he laughs cuz maybe I am Sonny West Elvis is old bodyguard and I was like no way shook his hand told him I was big Elvis fan and that a lot of people who said bad things about sunny and read through the years didn't know what the hell they were talking about being a former drug addict I knew exactly where they were going when they wrote the book course I didn't know that at the time I was still young but you know as I look back on it they were trying to help Alvis and sure there was a little problem what money you don't give somebody with 20 years service weeks pay and say see you later I don't blame you for being angry and about the book anybody who was in their situation would have did the same damn thing included me you or anybody else who felt betrayed so anyway we had a nice little conversation I went on about my way and sunny I just want you to say rest in peace my friend God bless you and now you're up there with Elvis looking down on the world laughing!!

Alan Haynie Sonny and Red both loved Elvis and wanted him to get off the drugs and get healthy. They more than anyone else to help him. They worked really hard for him for many years. He fired them for no good reason. I don't blame them for writing the book. They were trying to help Elvis get straight. God knows, we all wished that he had kicked the drug habit and lived to a ripe old age.
