There is a very legitimate use case for a sonoff micro over a smart plug. The sonoff micro makes it possible to use a USB power bank as a low voltage UPS while still being able to have a smart switch on the USB device you are powering. This comes in very handy for the sound machine in the baby's room. It stays running in case of a power outage with a USB bank, and I can still have smart device control.

If sonoff moves away from open source, they will die very quickly. that's a massive part of there market share.

Thanks for the review! Bought it and works alright, the size is def an issue - it does cover a one usb port on my charging station but the problem was mitigated by using the rightmost port. Is the casing like this due to heat or something else?
@notenoughtech

You could use a short usb extension lead to bypass the issue with its size.

The 4switching channels makes me think they may include 4USB outs.... They have the space in the 'box' for 3 more. All powered off one USB input.

This thing wasn't made for data lol it was made for things like USB lights that you leave hooked up to USB power supply such as a solar generator.

im hoping to use them in a light display to remotely turn some usb lights on and off on a tree in my yard. it will be powered by a small 10,000 mah battery pack. if i did the math correct it should last the entire holiday season being on just a few hours at night. i didn't want to run extension cords to power it and thought this to be the best solution. i figured i could just put it all in a ziplock bag to keep any water/snow out. any input on this idea or any problems you think i might encounter would be appreciated. thank you....

It looks like Sonoff might be moving away from DIY / Hacking. Unless this new chip is just cost saving or maybe in preparation for more ZigBee devices. I struggle to find a use over a smart plug though, given it only switches the low voltage lines.

Hello you can almost manually add the data wires with a little bit of wire. That is how i would do it. But over all awesome video.

D+ and D- are fused with a resistor so it would be problematic. It's part of how BC1.2 is negotiated in this instance.

It is 0,4 watt. Same for on and off. This is more than I expected. I also use Shelly1 Plus (12V) with esp32 and it consumes 0,38 w when relay on and 0,15 w when relay is off (in eco mode). If they use bistable relay, it can consume 0,15 even in on state.

1. No ifttt support! 2. I failed to access it via API - zero devices returned upon successful login to ewelink. Did you do anything special apart from just login and enumerate devices?

IFTTT has webhooks so you can interact with it. Something tells me it could be your region? these are not documented well, what country is your account registered to?

@@notenoughtech 1. Sonoff support told me they do not support USB/micro via IFTTT yet. When you try to create a rule in IFTTT->ewelink, zero USB/micros are found. 2. I tried using node-red ewelink node. It does see my mini, but fails to see my micro.
