@@Music-for-Miles Hey there, I agree. Very helpful. Q for you: someone commented "It is also useful to know that plugging an ethernet cable from router to any one of the Sonos speakers also converts the system to a mesh network, serving the same purpose as the Boost." Is this 100% true? If I get and connect via ethernet a Mini-sub for example, will I get the same exact benefit of using a Boost? thanks

Thanks so much for very clear, informative video. Brief set up steps that came with Boost were pretty-well basic. App steps were also clear as mud. OK so I only got it yesterday but I really like to get stuff up and running asap. You've made that possible in just 8 minutes. Brilliant. Good video. Just FYI, I was furious about my Sonos products acting up in the past few months. I've had my units for almost 7 years now. Anyways after I spoke to technical support and they recommended the Boost, I asked him to connect me to sales directly. I asked and received a 15% discount for having to spend more money on a product that was working for many years. In any case, maybe it'll come in handy for some others that need to do the same.

Great review Vinyl for Miles. I rate my Sonos speakers too but the decision makers at Sonos keep giving me grief. 2-3 years ago I buy a playbar + sub. An absolutely sweet set up! Then a year later a systems upgrade on the sonos app makes the ipad I was using as the volume/settings and spotify control obsolete. Customers on their help forum ask for stand alone software to make their 5 year old ipads still usable; Sonos respond with a sorry but nope and move on, as cold as that.. So now I use my laptop to run my Sonos and music software - no train smash here. Then just recently i'm thinking the subs a bit quieter than the norm and on closer inspection, its still connected but there's no sound. So after digging around a bit on the net, reading help forums and busting a whole stack of time rebooting yada yada, I've sussed out that my network/playbar now doesn't support my sub anymore, and that Sonos have now made it a thing during a systems upgrade that we now have to buy an overpriced booster to make everything sweet again. So yes, I will buy the "over priced" booster because i have no choice but Sonos needs to remember what happened to another brand that had a quality product and a loyal fan base but over played their worth with trapping people into their product. People get pissed off and go with android!

Is your line-in set to Automatic, Uncompressed, or Compressed? Mine was set to automatic, but was experiencing drop-outs using Sonos Port and my turntable. Compressed eliminates that issue, but of course I don’t want to actually compress the sound quality if possible. Got the Boost. Still having drop-outs on Automatic and Uncompressed. Maybe I’ll give Sonos a call.

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. Will this work for mp3 albums I have stored on my iPad? I do not want to pay for a music service. Basically, I want to scrap my whole clunky, heavy stereo system, including the two 12" speakers in cabinets I designed myself. I am keeping my turntable, but I have a preamp to allow me to digitize my LPs on my Tascam. Whilst you can directly connect a Sonos speaker via Ethernet to your router, this is not always practical. For example I have a cupboard which controls my media and I do not want a speaker in a cupboard. Also, some people may have their router located in a place where it is not practical to wire in a speaker. So the boost is a good solution for this. Even Sonos themselves do not push the boost if a direct connection to a speaker is possible.

IMHO, best to spend the cheddar on upgrading the home Wireless equipment to 802.11ac, tri-band expandable mesh (Speed rating: AC1200). ...And definitely wire the router and access points together, wherever possible. 802.11ac, tri-band will provide the additional bandwidth that SONOS requires and the SONOS, BOOST device can be forgotten about. IMHO, it's a good idea to periodically upgrade a home's residential home networking equipment to the best current equipment that can be afforded. This being said, I recently read a horrible review of Orbi's new WIFI 6 product line and believe, for significant reasons, that it's too early to adopt the WIFI 6 standard. Maybe wait another 12 to 18 months? IMPORTANT: In these days of Covid-19, social distancing and working from home, remember to speak with your tax advisor about the deductibility of upgrading the home network to a 802.11ac, tri-band, wired system configuration, from, Orbi or Eero. Chances are the home network equipment upgrade cost can be deducted from Federal Taxes, as a work/computer expense.
