Sonos Google Assistant is here ... it’s finally here. The long, year and a half wait for Google Assistant on Sonos is over, so we can now link up Google Assistant to Sonos speakers like the One and the Beam. How well does it work? What features is it missing? And was it worth the wait? Let's walk through the setup and give this a review.

If you had to choose between the Sonos Play:1 & the Bose SoundTouch 10. Which one would you get? Plus I've just read on the Google Play Store that the Sonos app is a little to be desired & I've ran in to an issue with it saying it can't connect to the WI-FI when there's nothing wrong with the WI-FI settings when everything in the household is running just fine with my router. Read up on the Play Store ratings for the app are bad & most are saying Sonos updates to offten & never check for flaws before releasing the app updates. My thought is I love the sound of the Sonos Play:1 but it's only as good as the Sonos app to control the Sonos speaker. Another thing is you just can't use the original apps for the music service that you like because you have to use the ones from the Sonos app & they are not as loaded with features like the originals. I know I have one & I'm ready to jump from Sonos to Bose SoundTouch 10. I'm still hoping to keep the Sonos Play:1 but with in my return grace period I have to make up my mind. Plus I think you have more options when you have Bluetooth & WI-FI with the SoundTouch 10 then if you just have WI-FI with the Sonos Play:1.

Because the update took so long, I chose the work-around via Yonomi which works pretty good with my Sonos speakers. I was hoping that with the update I would be able to automatically lower the music when saying "Ok Google" as it is the case with the Sonos One or Sonos Beam. This tremendously helps Google to better understand your commands. When you have a Sonos speaker without integrated mic and you control your Sonos system via a Google Home device this feature though isn't working (yet). This is a real pitty as this would have been a huge plus. As to now, I don't see any benefits compared to the Sonos controls via Yonomi. I have to say that I am a bit disappointed as this update took such a long time but doesn't bring the feature I was hoping for.

Not stupid at all. It’s kind of buried, but if you look in the Google Assistant app on your phone ... tap on your avatar icon ... then on the “Assistant” tab in settings. One of the top items on the page should be “Assistant Voice.” There’s 11 in there to choose from right now.

You won’t have Google Assistant built into the speaker itself since it doesn’t have the microphone, but if you have a Sonos One or Beam you can use that speaker to control the older Sonos speakers. There are also ways to link Google Home to Sonos using Yonomi as a middleman. www.androidpolice.com/2018/01/14/can-now-control-sonos-speakers-google-home-yonomi/

I'm a huge fan of Sonos and have been using their products since the early days (I think since at least 2005ish?). It took them FAR too long to add Google Assistant support but I'm glad it's finally here. I think they've done a pretty good job out of the gate but we are missing some obvious low hanging fruit in terms of functionality. You mentioned being able to sync Sonos and Google Home devices - this would be fantastic!! They also need to address Sonos groups. They should just copy what Google has done with predefined groups (IMHO). They should also allow you to "pair" a Google Home device (like a mini or a home hub/nest/whatever) with a Sonos speaker so that you don't have to specify a room to play music in a particular room. Google home already does this with lights and other smart home devices. Anyway - lots of room for future features but I'm pleased that it's FINALLY here.
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 жыл бұрын
Really interesting suggestion for pairing a Google Home to a specific Sonos speaker or group. That would be interesting and simple way to add voice to any Sonos speaker that doesn’t have it built in. I also agree with your take about Sonos needing to copy Google’s predefined groups. There’s some rough edges to work out and the low hanging fruit (as you mentioned). Hopefully they’ll start chipping away on those updates sooner than later.
@Azn_Bran
@Azn_Bran 5 жыл бұрын
Yes the lack of groups is a bit disappointing. I am sure with updates they will add this functionality. The lack of apple music support is also disappointing as I had both services on and off for years and recently decided to just go all in on Apple Music since I use Car Play a lot with my new car and that means Siri/Apple Music.

like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, kzbin.infoUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

If you solely use Google Assistant to control smart lights and such, can these fully replace Google Home Minis? I have one per room. Thinking of upgrading specific rooms with Sonos One and gifting the Home Minis to family members who are delving in. Is there any major reason you see to keep both in a room?
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 жыл бұрын
For controlling things like smart lights, there's no difference between the Home Mini and the Sonos One. I'm able to control every smart home device I have via Google on Sonos. Unless you want/need things like voice calling, voice match, or Chromecast support, the Sonos will work great. And those handful of missing features could get added in time with software updates. If your main use is smart home device control, there'd be no reason to keep a Google Home Mini in the same room with a Sonos One.

You can teach Google Assistant how your voice sounds. If you ask for personal results, like what’s next on your calendar, it will only do it if it recognizes it’s you. Otherwise it will only allow general requests from unrecognized voices. It also makes it easier to have multiple users each pull their personal results from one speaker. Here’s a good article on it: www.the-ambient.com/how-to/set-up-voice-match-google-home-streaming-305

Hey Google repeats any simple command like, “turn on the lights,” with an unnecessarily long and completely pointless “turning on the large lamp.” And it does so at whatever random volume it was last set at. So if you come home at 1am and need the lights on for a minute while you take your shoes off and find the bathroom, Google wakes up the whole house. Even if it’s not 1am I still found the lengthy command repetition incredibly annoying. If Alexa understands the command it just has a soft ding of affirmation. Waaaay more user friendly. Listening to google’s lengthy explanations of it affirming that it’s going to do the simple thing I just asked it to, I can’t help but think that no one at google has ever actually tried to use their assistant in every day life. What a simple oversight. I found hey google unuseable because of how totally annoying it is. I use the voice assistant for four main things 1. Lights control 2. Speaker control 3. Sleep sounds such as thunderstorms 4. Telling me the weather. Hey Google doesn’t have a built in sleep sounds feature. As best I can tell I’d have to subscribe to the google music app and select appropriate audio tracks from the market to get this to work. It’s arguably the worst major brand music streaming app out there so that’s a no-go. Meanwhile it’s built into Alexa for free and automatically defaults a one hour playback of whatever sleep sound you choose. Quite useful. So basically Hey Google fails on two of the four main reasons I want a voice assistant. I was surprised that google was worse than Alexa but for my purposes it is and I had to switch back.
@UndecidedMF

Nice and thoughtful review. I agree on the chatty aspect of Google Assistant. Alexa really is the best on that front and something that Google can fix with an update. As for the sleep sounds, they do have some available: support.google.com/googlehome/answer/7364558?hl=en

Change your country to United States at sonos.com (profile settings) and you are good to go (took around 1 hour until the settings was reflected in the Sonos app though). Sonos app is still in your native language after you've changed country (at least on android). I'm from Sweden so I've added two languages to the Google Home. Both swedish and english works ok with my Sonos One speakers, but sometimes Google answers back in the wrong language (a known issue). I haven't tryed only having swedish as language settings yet, but I guess that would work.

Thanks for the video Matt. Here are my thoughts. I think it is really stupid to force people to pick between Google Assistant or Alexa. I use them both. One is better for some things and the other is better for other things. I was very interested in Sonos and was thinking about replacing all of my speakers in the next year or two with them, but this is a deal breaker for me. I'm amazed that they thought this was a good idea and wonder what their real motivation was to pull this boneheaded move.
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 жыл бұрын
Based on everything I read, it came from extensive user testing. I'd also love to have multiple assistants on the speaker at the same time, but I can see how it could get confusing from a user experience perspective. You or someone else in the house setting an alarm, timer, reminder, etc. on one assistant, but when that item gets triggered you either forget, or don't know which assistant someone else used. Not a show stopper in my book, but I get why they'd want to simplify it for a smoother user experience. Since this isn't a hardware limitation, support could come down the road. I think it'd be worthwhile to hit Sonos up about wanting that functionality. If there's enough demand for it, maybe they'll change their stance.

I'm not completely sure. I do know you can change your country in your Sonos account: www.sonos.com/myaccount. But I'm not sure if that will actually help when setting up Google Assistant because they're probably detecting where you are by IP address. You might be able to use a VPN to make it look like you're coming from another country.

I must admit that I'm not as excited about the update as you are. I do use Google voice recognition every day, (but not Google assistant,) though I have to bring up a google search page and click on the blue microphone to ask a question. (My main computer is in my living room, and my big screen is my monitor. I don't have cable.) I also use x10 to control many devices, just bought my fist Chev Bolt and installed a lev 2 charging station outside my front door, so I'm trying to stay up with the times and be a positive influence. (Thanks for your very informative presentations, they help me a lot - I'm a subscriber) I would very much like to use voice control to actuate more of the features in my home environment, but I don't want to buy an expensive speaker system, and have to worry about security to do it. And I already have a stereo in my living room for my listening pleasure. I don't need it to be available in other rooms, as my wife and I have different music preferences and usually enjoy music in our own environments. This seems to be the main feature of the systems you review. I'm a retired software engineer, and can still create software on a .Net platform - is there a way to tie in my stereo, computer, monitor, and various home x-10 devices into a Google voice controlled (their voice recognition is pretty darned good) system without using a speaker / control system like Sonos, (which, to me, is expensive, hack-able, and has a lot of features I don't need?)
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t blame you for not wanting to spend money on a something like a Sonos speaker if you already have good “dumb” speakers. You can actually give smarts to existing speaker systems with Amazon Echo Dots (they have aux audio output). Sadly, the Google Home Mini’s don’t have aux out, but you can hook up Google Chromecast Audio to a set of speakers (store.google.com/au/product/chromecast_audio). A lot of interesting options to add smarts and streaming capabilities to existing speakers. I don’t have much hands on experience with X10 gear, but I do know there are ways to hook it up into smart home systems like Home Assistant. Then Home Assistant can act as your bridge between X10 and Amazon, Google, or Siri. It’s a pretty powerful platform that can run on any computer from a full blown PC to a Raspberry Pi. And as a software engineer, I don’t think you’d have much trouble picking up how to get Home Assistant up and running. I waited ages before getting rid of my Sonos Ones and replacing with Echo Plus Devices. This wasn't all that much due to the Google home wait but more for the fact Sonos had critical bugs in the firmware. Some of them Sonos were too slow to deal with and other were simply never fixed. I understand that some features Amazon intentionally withholds from non Echo devices but there are features that should work but are just broken on the Sonos One. After a year with Sonos Ones it became obvious that Sonos's main priority is to make a great sounding cross platform speaker with very little interest in maintaining a capable smart home automation device. This is what I need more than anything. Something tells me you will never really get a complete Alexa/Google smart home experience unless you buy a device native to the vendor.
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 жыл бұрын
A lot of the limitations with Sonos and Alexa are imposed by Amazon. They're holding back certain features from third party devices. Over the past year I saw Sonos slowly rolling out additional support for Alexa features, like Alexa announcements which showed up last August I believe (there are others too). If you're someone who is all in on Alexa and uses it as the central backbone of your smart home, you'd be better off going with Amazon devices. In fact, you can actually pair Amazon devices to specific Sonos speakers or groups and get the best of both worlds (full Amazon support and better sound from Sonos). I'm hoping they add similar functionality to Google Home devices and Sonos.
@Trafficker1985
@Trafficker1985 5 жыл бұрын
@@UndecidedMF yeah sonos are making some progress to roll out new features but you typically find when they do its half baked and often do not work properly. The final straw for me was a bug where sonos one would not pick up my voice commands the first 2-3 times regardless of how loud I said Alexa. Sonos sent me another one which had the same issue. Spotted a couple of reddit posts with people having the same issue. This went on for 3 and half months with no fix. Got some echo replacements with no such issue so it was clearly a hardware/firmware issue and not alexa. I think that the engineering team working at sonos is limited in their size/resources to fixing these types of issues where as Amazon is not due to their size. This is another consideration for me as I'm slowly making these devices responsible for controlling many aspects of my smart home so it's important the support is up to par. I enjoy your videos BTW, keep up the good work. :)

It works directly on speakers like the Sonos One and Beam. However, older speakers can be controlled with Google Assistant if you have one of the newer speakers in the mix. You'll only get that voice Assistant menu item if you have at least one Sonos speaker with the built in microphones and Assistant. However, if you have something like a Google Home Mini or Google Asdistant/Home app on your phone, you can add Sonos speakers inside the Google Home app. Then you can ask Google using a phone or the Home Mini to play something on your Sonos speakers.

@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 5 жыл бұрын
The Homepods sound really nice, but there are some differences. My Audio Engine speakers have a sub under the desk, so the low end is more punchy. They’re also more directional, which is why I prefer them on my computer for video and audio editing. Almost like a good set of near field monitors. The Homepods have an enveloping sound that I really enjoy for listening to music as I work on other things. Even though they don’t have the same super low end of the sub under my desk, it’s not something I miss most of the time when listening to music. The dynamic range and enveloping sound of the Homepods are damn impressive.
