I needed to review the Sonos sub gen 3 because I've become addicted to buying speakers and this is supposedly the piece that ties it all together. The problem though is the exceptionably high price point. Is it worth the cost?
Watch my Sonos sub gen 3 review and find out now.

My pleasure 👊 And how exciting!! If you remember please let me know what you think once you've had a chance to play around with it. Don't forget to set it up on your phone and make some adjustments because it starts at 0... I usually bump mine up between +5-+9 for music and movies.

Have arc, 2 ones for rears and sub gen3 in living room and love it . I sold my wired Klipsch towers and bookshelves total of 11.2 home theater. I know it’s very different type of sound, but I love the clarity of Sonos NO REGRETS

Can you explain the "different" type of sound? I'm just curious since my existing setup wasn't as good as yours. I had a decent receiver and old Polk speakers but... man I just love being able to easily bump up the surrounds or bass of the Sonos on my phone. Nice setup though! How's gaming on it?

@@TheSAHDLife By difference, I want to say wire system sounds louder in bass of course it’s over powering the living room. But Sonos gives me the clarity on the dialogue for example center channel I can hear the voices much clear and crisp. Atmos effects do sound like more realistic and sounds I couldn’t hear on older setup. my Yamaha receiver is atmos which I only use it for the hdmi ports since my tv has 4 hdmi ports. Other things is no messy wires are gone . 👍🏽 in my bedroom I have arc, 2 one SL I only need sub , which I’m thinking to get the sub mini for this location. Will be upgrading the ones in living room for the Era 300 but later since it’s a Costly system but sound quality is good specially if you know how to play with the Sonos eq etc. My wife was not to happy when I started buying Sonos products because of price , And now she enjoys movies with fam because of sound. Welcome to the Sonos fam Sahd Life.

I started with the Beam Gen 1 and later added IKEA Symfonisk rear speakers to my office LG OLED 55C1. It took over a year before I added the Gen 3 sub and WOW! I didn't realize what I was missing until the sub was added. A noticeable improvement in sound quality with just 5.1 audio format. The wife and I ended up watching more movies in the office compared in the our main TV room LG OLED 77C1 with the Atmos capable Nakamichi 7.2.4 system (our great room shaped exactly like yours). I did upgrade the Office Symfonisk rears to One SLs and didn't notice much of change with sound quality. The One SLs look better and easier to place with the smaller footprint. I don't think most folks could tell the differences between the Symfonisk vs One SLs in a blind test in home theater mode? Just went for broke and replaced the Nakamichi with the Arc, dual Gen 3 subs, and Fives as surrounds just after X-mas. Fantastic sounding system and it doesn't dominate the room with components/speakers/wires like my wired Nakamichi. The only thing extra I did was hard wire the Arc into my router because I was getting some slowdown on my wi-fi network when streaming/surfing. Side Note: make sure it says Dolby Digital 5.1 in the smartphone app for best sound quality. I had to set my TV to HDMI bitstream (not PCM or auto) to get the 5.1 Dolby.

Really interesting comment, thanks for sharing. That's interesting you went with the 5's. Now that the 300's are out would you have bought those instead? Or do you like the quality of the 5's because from my research, they seem like the superior speaker. If I bought more speakers now I would want the 5's as I have music on all the time and those just seem incredible. For movies though the 300's seem great for Atmos content...but how much of that is really available/optimized? Also, do you find the office is more enjoyable perhaps because it's a closed off, smaller room? I've realize the sound gets lost in the big space... I mean it still sounds great in our big space, but perhaps a closed off theatre room is just more enjoyable because the sound/bass doesn't have to travel as far? And I know you said you replaced it (perhaps mostly due to the nice aesthetics of the wireless), but how does the Sonos compare to the Nakamichi soundwise overall?
@mrgold3591
@mrgold3591 Жыл бұрын
@@TheSAHDLife I purchased the Nakamichi new from Amazon and instantly had to replace the soundbar part because of it wasn't working correctly. Nakamichi replaced it ASAP; but, I started getting a slight muffling sound cutting in/out over time that was getting worse. We couldn't listen to Nakamichi towards the end because the sound quality was getting so bad. My office is really a 14 feet X 21 feet with 9 foot ceilings formal living room with a 6 foot wide X 8 foot high archway opening into an open floor plan. I also have a Beam Gen 1, Gen 3 sub, and Symfonisk rears in our 18 foot X 21 foot master bedroom with wall mounted LG OLED 55C9. Both Sonos systems sound very similar and just as outstanding in both rooms. Decided to go with the Arc, dual subs, and Fives because my great room is around 20 feet by 42 feet size. I have my rear surround Fives in the middle along opposite walls pointed towards the TV area. I just guessed and figured the One SLs would be too small and the Era 300 didn't have a release date yet during X-mas sale. The Arc set-up can really fill that great room space without any issues. I don't know if I would have picked the Era 300s over the Fives? Seems like a lot content I watch over streaming services or cable TV isn't in Atmos format (not into spatial audio just yet).

@@TheSAHDLife I wanted to give you an update on my experience with the sub so far. For starters it’s no light weight. When I picked it off the counter I had to chuck it over my shoulder. Walked out of Best Buy with a big smile, like a kid walking out of a video game store wondering what I’m going to play to test this new toy. The finish and build quality is top notch. They even include a soft wipe towel to wipe off smudges and dust off it. Set up, pairing and tuning was a breeze. I slapped on some Dr. Dre’s Dre day. This thing filled my entire home with deep tight bass. Much so the sound extended to a dining area across my den where all the other Sonos are residing with the sub. Another couple ones and the sub will still be able to fill that area with bass. You were 100% right that over time you begin to notice the crispness the speakers broadcast. The highs are crisper mid and vocals are cleaner. The sub is perfect, it’s the missing piece every system needs. You don’t know you need it until you have it. Watched a couple movies and shows and it fills the room with that extra bass needed to complete experience. I apologize if my grammar isn’t the best as English is not my first language. Thanks again for a great review and keep up the great content. Mando from West Texas.

I understand the Sonos itch. My cousin talked about how good the Beam 2, Sub mini and 2 Ones as rears were for his parents…so after doing my own research I bought the Arc, Sub mini and 2 ones as rears in my living room…really enjoyed that, so I put a Beam 2 and Sub mini in my family room…then I bought a Move to take to work/move around the house (it’s also how I found your channel)…then the Era 300s came out 🤯 Moved my Ones to be rears in my family room and set the Era 300s as rears with my Arc and Sub mini for a full 7.1.4 setup that I’ve been craving since Dolby Atmos became commercially available

@@TheSAHDLife Yes, right now it’s just the single era 100 (with arc and sub) to send the turntable to those speakers and future Sonos speakers. I’ve been pleasantly surprised how nice the 100 sounds with the soundbar. I bump the volume of the soundbar a little higher than the 100 to drive the sub but I wasn’t expecting the fuller stereo sound compared to just the arc and sub alone. I like the 100 well enough that I may just get another pair for rear surrounds.

The Sub Mini is a really solid performer a well. Think a move is in the future for outside. I also have helped folks install Sonos in their houses and have a house we utilized multiple Sonos amps for in ceiling speakers and paired them to Beams with TVs. @@TheSAHDLife I was originally planning to use the 300s as a stereo pair for music and TV via airplay from my Apple TV - but I ended up splurging on an Arc the very day I got em, so they’ve been setup as rear surround for the few days I’ve had em. You’re absolutely right though, They’re all incredible for music and everything. I’d say music would sound even better with 300s as fronts, but I don’t feel like I’m missing much with my current config. That said, I’m very impatiently awaiting the moment I can afford a Gen 3 sub in the next 2 or 3 weeks. Taking that low energy load off the 300s and Arc and allowing them room to breath is really going to open up the whole system to its full potential. It’s definitely a big investment but you get what you pay for with Sonos. The only small nagging concern I’ve is with their longevity. I like to take care of my gear and enjoy it for decades, especially since I don’t make these big ticket purchases very often. I just hope these won’t become obsolete or unusable. So part of me wonders if I should have gone the analog speaker route, knowing they’d still work great 15-20+ years from now. But every time I play a movie or an Atmos track on Apple Music, that wow factor brushes the doubts away. And it’s always a relief not to deal with spools of speaker wire! :)

As long as I can fling to every speaker individually and combine groups I can't see any reason I wouldn't be happy. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to control ALL the speakers when using the voice control from one of them. But maybe I just need to take the time to figure that out. Well that's an exciting purchase!! So, I only recently discovered (I mean actually got into) Sonos and I fell hard and fast for the sub. The sub-mini in my brain seemed like it just couldn't be good enough, but I have since experienced it and it surprised me! What's your experience like with it? I am obviously still very happy with the sub. Then for your other speaker, it's funny, my first experience was listening to the 5 and I thought it was SO good. Even after getting these speakers (beam, ikea ones, play 3's) I secretly kind of wanted to buy some 5's for my music listening experience, and I thought the 300's were a bit gimmicky? However! Since then I have gone back to Bestbuy where I was able to test the 300's and the 5 side-by-side and my take-away was that you made the right choice. Sure maybe if you sit directly in front of the 5's, they sound better, but I realized I NEVER do. I'm always moving around, and the fact the 300's sound SO good wherever you are in the room, well I have changed my tune and really want some lol! They are out of my price range for now but hopefully one day! Would love to hear your thoughts on that speaker also!

Have a Sonos beam gen 2. Would you recommend the sub mini or one of the new era products to compliment it?
@TheSAHDLife
@TheSAHDLife Жыл бұрын
This is a good question. I would say the sub-mini. The bass just adds a layer you won't get from anything else. In the meantime, get some cheap used 3's or Ikea bookshelf speakers from Marketplace to give you the surround. Here's my logic... the Beam does have atmos but it doesn't have upward firing speakers, so if you're looking to add it to that system, it won't really compliment it. IF you're looking to put that speaker in a different room though as a standalone speaker, I mean you'll get a lot more flexibility which is very cool if you get the 300. If you're pairing them together in 1 room, get the sub-mini. If you want music in another room also, then get the 300.
@mrgold3591
@mrgold3591 Жыл бұрын
The sub mini or Gen 3 sub is a perfect addition to add first. The sub will take the low bass and mid range bass away from the Beam. The Beam can then concentrate on mids, highs, and dialogue for a even crisper sound and improved clarity. I like surrounds; but, not everything uses surround sound compared to low/mid bass. I sometimes don't hear my rears; except, in background music for dialogue heavy shows, news, or reality TV. I have 4 IKEA Symfonisk bookshelf speakers and 2 One SLs as my rear surrounds for my 3 Beams and they work perfectly for me (2 Beams with Gen 3 Sub+surrounds and 1 Beam with surrounds only).

@@TheSAHDLife it's always a good idea to look around, check for used prices vs new and if it's really worth it. Most people with nice quality subs will probably treat them well and good audio and sound products will last for as long as the weakest link, which could be a few years or a few decades so you can usually find good deals with things like this. True the wireless function is very practical and if you go full on Sonos it's even better but I am not sure on this and you can correct me if I'm wrong but are there any physical/analog inputs or is it only wireless, because that is a big deal breaker for people who wouldn't want to go full Sonos setup and only want the sub, if it does or doesn't pair with anything else of course, I'm also not sure about that. In the end, if you're happy with your purchase and you get the most out of it then that's what counts in my mind.

It is SO expensive but honestly it does hit harder and deeper than I ever would have expected. The only SVS speaker I've heard was a mini-sub... and yes the Sonos one is on another level. I'm sure it depends on room size and where it's located etc... but I think the added cost is because of how seamlessly it works in the ecosystem. You can pair and use it how you'd like which is great because sometimes I group it together with other speakers in the house and I love that. I just watched John Wick 4 (again!) last night and the sub never fails to make me smile, especially when it hits those really low notes. It's awesome.

I.O.S. Trueplay helps adjust the Sonos home theater system (with or without subs and/or surrounds) to your room environment and optimal sitting position. Every room is completely different along with Sonos speaker types, placement, furniture, ceiling height, sound absorbing/reflecting materials, and listening preferences. The I.O.S. Trueplay helps even out those factors for a neutral sounding system you can adjust from there. I.O.S. Trueplay isn't necessary; but, doesn't hurt either. Sonos stand alone devices with built-in mics with Trueplay that works with Android only adjust the speaker(s) at their location; not, at your optimal listing position or entire room environment. That works great for portable Sonos speakers you move around.

Well at least the Arc can rock pretty much everything and do it well. It seems like a good buy. I can't complain about the Beam, for its size it puts out a lot of sound. I guess I like that it is pretty compact. The arc is quite big isn't it? But yeah one day hopefully we can get full systems decked right out 👊 Also have you found any particular shows or movies that really sound good on it yet?

It's funny you spent a sizable amount of airtime to justify buying a $900 piece of equipment that can only output lower frequencies. Trust me, I've been there too haha. I totally get you. And with that thinking, I can already see your Beam being replaced by the Arc soon. :P When I had the Beam, I spent weeks watching KZbin reviews of the Arc until one day I decided, enough is enough. I can't watch these videos any longer and I eventually succumbed to the temptation. Welcome to the Sonos ecosystem!
