This morning I listened to a Herbie Hancock solo CD. Among other numbers he has interpreted his ballad "Sonrisa" - a composition by him. The beautiful melody grabbed me immediately. He plays his piece very sensitively. This evening I heard Joey Alexander's interpretation of this number on KZbin. I was torn, listened to the track several times, but I liked Joey's version, then 10 years old, better than Herbie Hancock's original.

As much as I love the incredible HH, I have to say that this is the version I keep coming back to because I still marvel that a not-quite-10yr-old boy could play with such exquisite sensitivity

Sometimes, not very often, when words fail to express a feeling generated by an event (in this case music) we can only moan and groan with our eyes closed and head bowed. This is one of those events. Those who dislike my observations...go figure out: They are not Jazz musicians and often don´t like nor understand this style of music or what I said.
@alvarostockle9 жыл бұрын
Easy. I'm a musician, not a jazzist nor a classical only. I write scores for orchestra arranging cinema and videogame music and I'm pianist in a latin orchestra and a Dixeland band too. The true musician (I'm not that much even if I sound pedantic. There's still a lot I have to learn) likes and understand every kind of music. Take George Gershwin for example. is Classical music (romantic really) for also has a lot of elements of jazz and even jazzist use to play his music. I play classical music in orchestras and piano solo or with singers, but that don't stop me to play jazz or other styles. And I play with musicians that master much more variety than I do. That's why I tell you: Be careful with the generalizations.
@DihelsonMendonca9 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I play Jazz and Classical music for more than 40 years. And the more I study, the more I praise creativity as the aim of the great art. Joey Alexander is a single example of artist. There´s thousands of them, like: Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Coltrane, Charlie Parker...Michael Brecker. Art Tatum...Chopin, Bach, Liszt, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky. They are great, because they CREATED something new. They didn´t limited themselves to play other people´s music or read a piece of paper. Creation is the most central and important thing in music.

Hello, folks. how do you compare his development with other kids on his age that plays CHOPIN, LISZT, and other astonishing composers ?
@tyrone22529 жыл бұрын
Dihelson Mendonca He's better. He can play Chopin, Liszt and rachmaninoff for sure. That's how you learn and hone your chops as a pianist. Classical music is a great lesson in technique and scales, arpeggios and theory but this actually requires more thinking because he's improvising on just chord progressions. To have this much feel and understanding at 11 is unreal.
@mentaripagi2109 жыл бұрын
tyrone2252 he's not 11 when he played this. 9 yrs old....3 weeks before reaching 10 yrs old
@gordoloboalbondigas9 жыл бұрын
Dihelson Mendonca I have not read that he studied classically at all. From what his father said, and he himself as well, he just learned starting at age six on a keyboard his dad brought home, from records his dad had of many jazz greats. What sets someone like this into another sphere of consideration is that he is improvising----he does not play the piece 2 times the same way. It is beyond astonishing. And then that he is so clearly happy doing this and giving it to others--an open beautiful spirit. Listening to him play fills me with gladness and not at all just because he is so young, but rather because he plays with such fresh vision perhaps...
@iroulis9 жыл бұрын
Dihelson Mendonca Chopin and Liszt are quantified: Either you follow the score to the note or else. One of Joey's other KZbin vid has Billy Crystal saying that Billy heard Joey play 'Round Midnight 3 times, and it was played different each time: You can't do that with Chopin, Liszt, and other astounding composers and be taken seriously; or can you. I hope Joey never plays Chopin, Liszt. and other astounding composers' songs the way they were written to be played. Have you heard Joey's version of Armando's Rhumba? He was responding to Chick's latest version (Trondheim 2012): It's like a conversation that began with the first version in My Spanish Heart: Granted, it was Chick talking to himself most of the time, but now there's another voice present.
@DihelsonMendonca9 жыл бұрын
Dihelson Mendonca Friends, I´m a Jazz Pianist, and I agree with your oppinions about Joey, when you say that his playing is superior to other kids playing just classical music, because playing Jazz is much much more than memorizing keynotes. The problem is that classical musicians would NEVER agree with us. I have done many quarrels with these guys because I argue that Jazz need more intelligence to play. And to play like this needs a superior intelligence.
