Joey Alexander: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Nov. 30, 2018 | Lauren Onkey -- When a baby grand piano rolls into the office for a Tiny Desk concert, you expect something special. But none of us could have imagined what it's like to see 15-year old Joey Alexander play that piano with such mastery. The thing is, when you see him play live, you quickly forget his age and get lost in the intense focus of his performance. Alexander and his stellar supporting cast - Reuben Rogers on bass and Kendrick Scott on drums - form a tight trio, locking eyes as Alexander's compositions unfold. The relaxed, seasoned veterans looked thrilled to be playing with Alexander at the Tiny Desk, and he was clearly inspired playing with them. The crowd was both mesmerized and humbled by the memories of what they were doing at 15.
Born in Indonesia, Alexander learned to play by listening to his father's jazz albums. When he was just 10-years old, Wynton Marsalis invited him to play at a Jazz at Lincoln Center gala, and the young Alexander set the jazz world buzzing. He made his mark covering classics by Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, but he's now recording and performing more of his own compositions. He showcased that original work during his Tiny Desk performance. Alexander's vigorously rhythmic playing was playful in the opening "Eclipse" (from his latest album of the same name), which he described as "spontaneous playing." "Bali," also from Eclipse, followed, while "City Lights" (from his 2016 album Countdown) closed a set that ranks among the year's finest jazz performances at the Tiny Desk.

As a drummer I can share a rule of thumb: The more drums you have, the more variation you can squeeze out of a little technique. The less drums you have, the less you have to hide behind, technique becomes the variation.

This version of City Lights is incredible because he's finally playing with a drummer who plays with as much expression as technique. If Joey finds the right drummer and bassist, the world could hear jazz on a level not seen since Monk and Bird. I put him on that level...seriously. The first time I heard Joey two years ago, I cried. Not because the tune was sad but because I'd never seen, or imagined anything that amazing before. I've got a feeling that jazz is going to make a come back.

Some guy came to my campus a few weeks ago and played all these pop songs. When he was packing up we had a conversation as musicians and when I told him I played jazz, he immediately told me I needed to double major because jazz won't ever make any money ever again. I think he's just a sell out. He had never even heard of snarky puppy. When I told him I thought jazz was making a comeback, he laughed. It's real though. This video is proof.

I and a friend were fortunate to have been able to see him performing live at Jazz Alley in Seattle. There was a standing ovation after almost every performance. We stayed, and paid, to hear the second set. An amazing, amazing musician.

~8 Billion people in the world and I can safely say that not a single 15-year old comes close to Joey. The boy is literally one in a billion, and there are only a handful of jazz prodigies throughout the ENTIRE existence of mankind that may be comparable. Sure, there are probably some talented young kids that can play any of the pieces here note for note, but Joey has an UNDERSTANDING of the music that many established musicians have been chasing after for their entire career. And Joey has had that connection to music since before his voice dropped, long before this video! His patience and control remind you of the early greats, yet his attention to detail breathes new life into every note. His subtle interactions with his band are so masterful that, if you didn’t know Joey’s age, you’d guess that he was decades older. And, most importantly, he’s having the time of his life! I cannot stress enough how refreshing it is to have a prodigy that is a product of passion rather than the result of a strict upbringing. It’s both scary and exciting to think about how far Joey will get in 5 or 10 years, but I’m thankful to have witnessed the humble beginnings of one of the best to ever do it.

You hear many young geniuses and because they haven't lived their goal is just to break out the craziest pattern and prove they are the next Chick Corea. Not until they are much older do they understand and enjoy the beautify of the moment but he gets it. He let's the song stew. He builds the energy. When he finds a moment he likes he stays there and makes everyone feel that moment. I felt he commanded the emotional and academic aspects of each song. That was awesome.

If it was a gift, you'd have people like this who haven't put in tens of thousands of hours playing. With folks like him, they get the bug early, they are encouraged at it, usually they have some really good guidance though not always. Then they start to get attention for it and therefore they come to define themselves in terms of their abilities on the instrument, all at a young age when they have the most ability to absorb new information. And of course they don't burn out or get distracted at some point, which is always a possibility that young. When that happens, you get people like this.

For me it's better to listen music here in KZbin, than in Spotify-- it's like listening the music you like in a big concert that you enjoy so much (with thousands, millions of people around the world), but at the end, you can talk with each one of the assistants, and ask them about their feelings and experiences in the concert. You can talk with any of them whose thought seemed to you most interesting, and talk with him or her... Despite you will never know him or her in person. It's an amazing place. Endless amounts of musicianship caught in this session! I first watched this the day it came out and was completely dazed by the maturity in Joey Alexander's playing. I watch this at least every other month now and I eventually started paying attention to a different musician every time. I appreciated the ability to fill their playing with so much emotion as well as purpose, something everyone who starts out in improvisation struggles with at some point. So this is my first listening to Joey Alexander...Wow...blown away...What a trio this was...Bass and drums were just as good as pianist...I really liked the song City Lights at the end!!!

Joey Alexander came to the Kansas City area for a concert a few years ago. What an experience. It was great and his rendition of "My Favorite Things" was amazing. Imagine his long career ahead of him and all the great things he will accomplish as a gifted musician.

Never heard of Joey, but wow! Hes amazing and the stand up bass player and drummer are amazing! So on tune and apostrophise every note joey plays. My respects. Jazz will never die.
