It bit me in the ass last night. Was working my way through building a tree house, then thought "Maybe ol' no ears can help with the logs" Told him what I wanted, where to drop them and off he went. Except I wasn't paying close attention to him and he went and chopped the tree I had my house half built in destroying it all lol. But other than that, I agree the dude is amazing for a solo player

The NPC buddy you get is even cooler than just bringing you stuff. If you place down the white blueprint of the house you want to build, you can then tell him to "Finish the Structure", and he will actually BUILD the entire thing for you. Its sooooo nice.

Finally! I’ve always hated the Minecraft style building forced upon you. I hate building and in Fallout 4 you have to build settlements piece by fcking piece when you have a god damn flying robot with a buzz saw for one of his many hands as a companion.

Honestly I’m surprised games with horror elements don’t do the looming threat like this has more often. There is something inherently way more unnerving to have a mutant just stand at the edge of your view, or even hang around close just watching and waiting to keep you on edge rather than them going straight to attack mode like a lot of other horror game enemies are programmed to do.

Exactly! Was thinking this while playing the new Dead Space. Imagine slow-moving stalkers camouflaged by the light and shadow in certain areas. You glimpse them scuttling through slats of light as they methodically close the distance to you. It's amazing how Slenderman did this in 2012 but AAA horror titles still just dump shadows over the level and call it a day.

When I first saw Virginia, I had no idea she was friendly. So seeing her slowly walk towards me as this almost pristine looking figure, dancing and twirling in the distance with extra limbs- I genuinely thought she was a hallucination or boss, it was terrifying. Now I know she's nice it's fun to wait for her, but I hope they add either some more companions or some more hesitant enemies that act this way, it's so odd and creepy and it feels like a gamble as to whether someone is friend or foe it's great.

Tip: Before you start a new game choose Custom Difficulty and you can adjust the Season Length to "realistic" "long" "default" "short" same thing with Day Length.

I just wanna say it’s super cool how the AI notice one of their buddies gets killed, and their morale seems to go down, making them more cautious about what they do next. Not sure if it was the timing, but when that one cannibal took an arrow to the face, and the next one saw the bow string get pulled back, he stopped approaching and ran in a different direction. Thought that was cool

The first main problem I've encountered is the shear amount of walking and running you will do. The island is massive, and there are no traversal options other than going on foot. This is a big problem because the only way to really progress in the game is to go exploring and looking for caves. The second is that while the base-building is really cool, there really is no reason to even have a base. Your backpack has plenty of space for everything, and you can quickly make a temporary shelter wherever you are to sleep and save. They apparently said the reason that they've decided to release it in early access is because they wanted to add a lot more things to the game. I hope they fix these 2 issues.

Well, same thing in the first game. There's not really a good way to fix traversal, since the best we got was ziplines and water traversal with a raft. Base building was useful, but not heavily required. Plus mutants would seek out your base to mess with you.

I agree, I beat the game yesterday and I only ever built a starter base with logs my first hour into the game and once I left to explore I only used tarp bases until I reached the end of the story.

Love the AI in the game and how they react to you. I had built a house and I was standing a little ways away from it and saw a mutant walk up next to it, point at my house while looking at me like he was pissed that I built it or something. Very glad this game is turning out well day 1, looking forward to the future

Virginia and Kelvin easily my favorite parts. The AI companions were a little glitchy but I was not expecting how intelligent they could be, especially Virginia. I didn't even know she could be a companion. The process of befriending her was really organic, and she had alot of unexpected abilities that were really intuitive.

Loving those animations. Especially the transition from standing to running for enemy NPC's. Lookin at 7:22 That is so fluid and "human" More so since this NPC was facing forward, then straightened his stance before shifting to the side to run. Good stuff. then 7:32 Walking forward then erratically quickening then spinning. Never thought i'd be impressed with footwork that wasn't a "FIFA" or "Just Dance" game haha . Never mind scratch the last one.

I really, really REALLY do not understand how its still small indie studios delivering bombs like this in the survival genre. Valheim blew everything out of the Water and now Sons of the Forest is here with actually innovative and unique Twists to the formula and, to be honest, insane visuals, if you consider how few people are working on this. You would think that AAA studios start to recognize the potential and try to deliver, but nothing so far. Many people are tired of the endless online competetive grind and are looking for relaxed open world crafting experiences where you can immerse yourself in. I guess its harder to turn this type of game into a games-as-service grind where you can milk the audience for years to come, better make generic shooter nr. 54624 and slap some micro-transactions and seasons onto it

i just dont think theres a huge market for it, despite some being popular. i mean, this to me seemed so damn boring. nothing happened in this video. maybe he just did a bad job at explaining or what footage he showed, but what is the progression system? is the combat any good? what is the goal? what does late gameplay look like. Nothing shown here says play me to me. and for reference, i dont play online competitive games or most endless GaaS stuff.

Great review. As a side note, you can switch your building to the old style of building by going to the building notes and selecting "Switch modes". This will allow you to build prefabs.

After playing the game, I compiled a list of 14 maybe 15 bugs that I ran into. These bugs ranged from floating buildings to random building perm removal and the changing of item carry caps. I love what they have in the game and look forward to the updates (They definitely need to fix the ram leakage).

So many bugs if you're joining someone elses game aswell - like not being able to throw things, send logs up ziplines etc. which only affected me and not my friend who hosted. Some inventory stuff as well and being locked out of doing anything after building with logs. I was surprised when he said that it was light on bugs.

I found when trying to place a half log for the roof and it wont snap into place, you can crouch and it will give you the option to snap the piece in. I think this only worked because of the height of the roof i was building but thought it might be a helpful tip for anyone running into this problem when building.

This game is a ton of fun and looks amazing. Never played the first one but I have 50 hours so far and don't think I'm stopping too soon. I've been building a zipline network from one of the 3d printers, to a big waterfall near the mountain, then to a downed airplane. Looking to see how far I can get it going :D

There is a blueprint or building/equipment/weapon "template" mode where you can just toss the required materials at and it will auto build/assemble. You just toss the wire frame like outline of whatever you are trying to build in the area and then confirm - toss what you need at it.

I will say, if you plan on playing multiplayer, be prepared for a lot more bugs. We've had to restart the server a few times because of our characters getting stuck (but sometimes it can be fixed by picking up a log.)

The helper ally is something I was thinking in Valheim. I always thought it would be cool if you could have a helper Goblin that you pay in gold coins to do things like keep your torches lit, and pick nearby berries, etc.

This game has good potential. They just have to work on those features like doing bigger caves, more craftable items, more oppurtunities for building( a lockable gate for the wall is wellcomed). And most importantly work on the story. The hotfix where they added hotkeys was the first step in the right direction. I really think they can beat the first game by full release

I've ran into a handful of disruptive bugs, but they were easy fixes with a relog to the server or get your teammate to knock you then revive you. But if you haven't saved in a while when it happens, or if you get the glitch where you can't interact with anything while in a cave, you're screwed

ive been loving it so far but the only problem ive had this entire time is the waterfall noises. if you begin in the snow mountains theres a large waterfall about 2 minutes away from following the stream that has the audio overlapping and looping on itself, causing a really intrusive+buggy noise

Pc tip hold the i key for your hot key to switch items so you don’t have to open inventory to switch weapons. Also having trouble putting on the roof without gaps go on top you your base to fill the gap. If you encounter the glitch where you can’t swing weapon or open inventory find any item on the ground hold E to pick it up. Hold S to skip opening intro.

I played this game for ten hours straight and I am pretty sure it's my favorite survival game I have ever played. It's just the right level of difficulty in terms of survival and the horror is even better. When the sun sets, if you don't have anything but your lighter, good luck. It's freaking black. And I love it.

On my second play through I have an uneasy alliance with the cannibals. They’ve mostly left me alone because I’ve not been aggressive and ignored their camps. I’ve only killed one and that’s because Kelvin got too close and one attacked him. The AI is super impressive.

Be careful when you're around water with Kelvin! I swam across a pretty deep lake and back and didn't notice he was stuck underwater running into the walls with no way out. He doesn't tp or get his position reset so he just stayed there and I had to load a old save from hours previously. Also please make the music boxes craftable. I kick one over to my base everytime I load in. It's kinda nice to have an in-game music source. Even if I'd have to keep it powered I'd still use it.

The girls name is Virginia, after the first games multi-limb mutant. You apparently need to earn her trust beforehand, but she eventually joins you and among other things is able to fight/defend your place making use of firearms like the pistol.

It’s a treat to see the playerbase defend the game’s state prior to exploring the all of markers on the map, then immediately join the fold of those disappointed it doesn’t measure up to The Forest yet, and it’s obviously going to be a while before it ever does with the way it’s been absolutely frontloaded. All of the game’s content and excitement instantaneously ends the moment you finish your cave/mission exploring.

I played the first in EA and even in EA it felt more deep than Sons. I was so let down. They say six to eight months to full release. I think if that's the case this game is going to be severely lacking compared to the first. I hope I'm wrong because I do enjoy this game it just feels like a step back in many ways for me.

To be fair, if they weren't done with the story they wouldn't add an ending. The gameplay/survival is fine for EA but the story was just awful. No boss, more ammo than you ever need etc. Could have at least made a bossfight where the cutscene shows the huge blob. The fact that you get loaded up on ammo, grenades and meds before the final is just a huge let down when all you have to fight are some one shot enemies.

They are introducing seasons which is something I wanted many games to adapt to make immersion more deep. In skyrim the whole province was locked. Riften was perpetually locked in autumn for instance.

Honestly, both the forest and Sons of the Forest have the best enemy survival AI I've ever seen. Having the enemies move around watching you without attacking, either getting close or at a distance, and reacting to your actions is just a phenomenal feature that every survival with enemies should have.

Yeah totally agree. The AI reminded me of FEAR's AI. They will find ways to flush you out when you're in cover. Where's this game, their version of flushing you out is getting behind or at the side of your vision and whack you.

I honestly don’t understand what people mean by it having good AI. My bf and I put in 25 hours into the game and neither of us enjoyed it that much. One of the biggest problems we had with it was the AI, because they felt fairly easy and predictable to fight. Maybe it’s because of the way we played? We weren’t afraid of them or anything, so as soon as we saw any around, we just ran after them and killed them with the spear, which is 100% the best weapon in that game. Just felt very boring, and more annoying than fun.

A fuckin DS game has better Ai than what ever the fuck the deer has. Also the billions of bugs I encountered in the game are more than likely game breaking, or completely eliminates all of the fun to be had. FUCK THE BUILDING. Never been so infuriated with a game’s build mechanics in my life.

You're not just a random member of a rescue team btw. You're actually the main character from the first game's son "Timmy" you can see his tattoo that says "fight demons" in the intro of this right before you crash. Just an interesting detail I feel like alot of people are missing out on. Been enjoying playing this with friends and watching other's playthroughs. Glad this time around it's like a phenomenon and not just a cult classic that flys under everyone's radar until way later again.

No, you are not playing as Timmy. The main character doesn't have scar on his head. Timmy is the other guy that you met in the underground resort fighting the blob, and also on the ending he's holding a laptop near the cube. You can even see his scar before escaping the island with another helicopter.

Hate to inform you but you are wrong. Like completely wrong. Timmy and his father are in the game but you are not either of them. They were even in earlier trailers fighting a sluggy mutant and Timmy's dad yells "get down son" which is when you first "meet" them in sons.

The forest was the first horror game I ever completed. I had dabbled in Resident Evil 4 when I was a kid in played Darkwood off and on. But the forest was the first horror game I genuinely fell in love with completed. It was the type of game as well that I could beat once and then played a completely different way second time. The first time was a 10 survival horror experience with a very good ending, and the second time was a tense action experience with horror elements. The world was big enough but not too big, there was enough Secrets around the map to incentivize exploration, and the enemies were numerous without also feeling overpowering as long as you had a strategy. It did survival-horror correctly and survival correctly in my opinion.

The Forest was one of my top 5 most memorable and substantial gaming experiences with a friend of mine. The fear and excitement and mystery was so awesome the whole way through. If they remove all the map markers I would agree but they literally walk you through the game with them. The first game did not do this. You found everything through exploration including the hand drawn map. Sons gives you a GPS off rip with icons that lead directly to everything you can find. That is by definition hand holding.

I played this a lot over the weekend, it’s an amazing game and it’s astonishing that it’s in early access, versus some of the “complete” titles we’ve seen lately. There are places for improvement such as the menus and inventory and overall lack of items to craft but those are small grievances compared to the scope and beauty of this game. I don’t play a lot of survival but this one had me hooked from the start. I progressed from a scared guy hiding in a tent in the mountains to a geared up cave explorer in no time. Survive caves with a mix of combat and stealth. I only fight when I have to. FYI, You can change the crafting mode to blueprint style by holding down “change mode”, then place the outline of a structure on the ground and for a simple log cabin add logs by interacting with it, you’ll automatically cut them down to whatever size that’s needed. You can then manually expand on the structure once it’s done, for example add a porch or lookout tower. Helps you learn how the crafting system works and shows you how to build useful stuff like stick and rock storage or lanterns. The blueprints are limited, but are all useful. I’d recommend putting up a perimeter wall around a tent before starting on an elaborate compound. The more you explore and progress, the more the locals go on the offense and raid your camp. Just when you think you have a grasp, new terrifying enemies will show up and make short work of you and your camp so save a lot by keeping a tarp on you at all times. I tried peaceful as well, it’s satisfying but the tension of normal mode offers brought me right back. If this is early access then I can’t wait to see where this game goes.

these games need something like a "place mode" where you hold down a key, like ALT or something, and it detaches the cursor from moving the character and allows you to somehow place things more precisely using a new set of options that pop up when you are holding that button

Also for anyone who wants more logs as fast as possible, use your grappling gun and stick it on a tree close to you and place the other end towards your base. Can send logs flying down the line instead of bringing em back and forth

I love this game and the depth of detail that is present! Also, the AI system is wonderful and the scaling of the island to explore feels expansive and filled with various things to discover. A really phenomenal game given that it’s in early access and this well filled in. I highly recommend for an in-depth survival experience just as they talked about in the video, a great game to play!

Played the original when it was in its first alpha unplayable stuck with it probably put 1000s of hours of it the things the did in the 1st one with a dev team of four is crazy. If you loved the original your going to love this one it's crazy. I also don't mind the game not holding your hand telling you exactly what to do and how to do it.
