I am pretty sure it is the voice of Tommy Doss, who was hired because he sounded so much like the retiring Bob Nolan

this is my fave SOP song. Great Falls was my first home, 29 years later I moved back and had my first baby there. We lived 2 blocks around the corner from Charlie Russel's house. Still miss Montana.

In all of my years (70+) of listening to the Sons and watching movies with them as musical groups I never heard this.

My wife and I caught our first Golden Trout high up in the Beartooths of Montana, and so this song will always be sacred to me, and remind me of the pristine beauty up there at the treeline!

reminds me of the happiest days I remember, living in a bungalow two blocks from Charlie Russell's house. We were poor and had just had our first baby. Beautiful country.

Correction: That is the voice of Tommy Doss, who sounded a lot like Bob Nolan, and was added to the group just for that purpose when Bob left the group.

Yes, it's pretty good scenery over there as a regular visitor I think it's special.

Whenever I find life's stresses getting to me and need to give my spirits a lift, I head up into Montana's Beartooth Wilderness with my backpack, tent, sleeping bag, and fishing gear. I'm in pretty good shape for a guy pushing 61 if I do say so myself, but I'll continue going if I have to crawl.

I am pretty sure this is Tommy Doss singing "Montana". It was his first big solo recording with the Sons of the Pioneers and he sent a copy of the 45 to my father who he had grown up singing with. If I remember correctly it had his name on the record.

This is Bob Nolan, who sounded a great deal like Tommy Doss. While Nolan did retire in 1949, he returned to the studio afterwards to record sometimes. This was one of those times.

@mackthefatcat I understand. At 50, I find myself hiding from optimism regularly...but it is certainly not part of my genetic makeup. I don't like feeling jaded nor do I want to think the worst of others...and I go back to songs such as these to reflect and to remember of the hope I once harbored...not just for me and my family, but for all.

@minnrenegade I disagree...Ken Curtis is was Ken Curtis, Bob Nolan was Bob Nolan. Personally, I like them both for their individual sound.

@mackthefatcat Sadly, we are an anachronism...throwbacks from another time. Music with melody as opposed to a beat and singers with vocal talent, clarity and respect for their art. I hear very little these days that make any sort of an impression on me...and that is not to say that I don't hear anything good at all....but it is a rare occurrence.
