Constitution Day in Norway is the central national holiday, celebrated annually on 17 May. This is the favorite day of the year for all Norwegians!
Houses, boats, and cars are decorated with flags, and people in national costumes take to the streets, arrange festive processions, and concerts, and sing songs. The sight is very colorful and impressive. People smile, congratulate each other on the country's birthday, and hug!
Every year on May 17, Norwegian pupils, dressed in national clothes and carrying flags, hold festive processions. Parades are necessarily accompanied by school orchestras. After the children, adults also join the procession - representatives of political, sports, religious and other organizations.
The parade is completed by Russ - a crowd of cheerful youth in multi-colored pants. These are school graduates and from the end of April to May 17 it is customary for them to rake out their piggy banks and have fun to the fullest before the final exams!
They make funny business cards where they write something about themselves or whatever comes to mind! And all small children dream of becoming Russ and collecting such cards, it is essential for them to get more of them at the parade!
At the end of the official part, the celebration continues, people walk around the city, and eat ice cream and waffles - this is also a kind of tradition. After the concert, which usually takes place on the main square, Norwegians with the whole family go to restaurants or go home for a festive dinner. In general, mass festivities can continue until late at night.
The Norwegian national costume is called Bunad. They are very different, it all depends on the area in which the person was born. Almost every Norwegian has such a costume, it is an important part of the tradition. Moreover, it is customary to wear Bunad for all very important holidays: weddings, conferences, May 17, for the christening of children, and sometimes for Easter.
It is worth noting that all these costumes are completely handmade with silver jewelry, so they are expensive! And looking at them on the streets on May 17 is a real pleasure!
