Possibly works short because the water (could) be warmer then long... Plus Less water pressure in shallower water.

Yes, effective in deep water also. You may want to lightly squeeze the groundbaits into balls if 8ft plus. This will help it to get down to depth before breaking up on its way to the bottom.

Know what that's like, I fished Stockton reservoir one year in winter, ice all around, I stepped back forgetting I was on the T part and went in on my back. Was cold to say the least 😂😂
